Canada Banff Trip (케나다 벤프 여행) Day 4 Afternoon: Athabasca Falls and Columbia IceField (네째날 오후: 아사바스카 폭포와 콜롬비아 빙원)

제스퍼 국립공원(Jasper National Park) - 아사바스카 폭포(Athabasca Falls),  콜롬비아 빙원 (Columbia Ice Fields)

메디슨 호수(Medicine Lake)와 말린(Maligne Lake) 호수를 둘러 보고 다시 제스퍼(Jasper)로 다시 돌아와 "두 쪽의 빵 사이에 끼여 있는 천국"이란 재미 있는 메뉴판과 농담으로 손님들을 즐겁게 해주는 주인장이 있는 페트리시아 델리 (Patricia Deli) 에서 샌드위치 (샌드위치 4개에 $26 C)을 사가지고 벤프로 내려가며 피크닉을 하기로 하였습니다. 식당안에 테이블이 몆개 있지만 너무 혼잡합니다. 샌드위치를 사가지고 제스퍼 거리를 걷는데 아주 오래 된 것 같은 소방서가 있네요.

이제 소풍 준비도 되었으니 아이스필드 공원도로 (IceFields Parkway)를 따라 벤프로 향하면서 첫번째 들릴 예정인 아사바스카 폭포로 향합니다. 남쪽으로 40 마일 떨어진 콜롬비아 빙하 녹은 물이 아사바스카 강을 따라 내려오다 협곡에서 떨어지는 곳이 바로 아사바스카 폭포입니다. 케나다 록키에서 폭포 높이 보다 (80 ft/24 m),는 물쌀이 센 폭포로 유명하고, 가장 인기 있는 폭포라 합니다. 페트리시아 델리에서 준비해온 샌드위치를 아름 다운 풍경을 바라보며 먹는 맛은 제일 이었습니다. 제스퍼를 들리시면 페트리시아 델리를 꼭 찾아가세요.

콜롬비아 빙원 휴게소에서 보이는 아사바스카 빙하는 지금도 어마 어마 (혀같이 나와 있는것이 3.7 mile (6 Km) 이고 폭이 0.6 mile (1 Km)) 하지만 100 여년 전에는 빙하가 휴게소 있는 자리까지 덮고 있었다고 합니다. 지금도 매년 7-10 ft (2-3 m) 씩 줄어 든다고 하네요. (지구 온난 상황을 논하자는 것은 아니지만) 저희들은 시간도 없고 $50(C)을 내고 빙원 위에 서 보는 것이 가치가 있는 것인지 몰라 빙하차로 구경하는 것은 안하기로 했습니다 (어떤 분들은 꼭 해보아야 한다고 하네요). 그 대신 바람이 좀 쎄긴 했지만 걸어서 빙하 끝이 있는 곳까지 올라 갔습니다. 위험하여 빙하 위에 올라갈 수는 없지만.  제 생각엔 이것으로도 총분히 만족하다 할 수 있겠습니다.

우는 벽 (Weeping Wall) 에 떨어져 내려오는 물은 원래 적다고 하지만 우리들이 들렸을 때는 거진 전혀 없었습니다. 저희들 생각에는 사이러스 산 (Cirrus Mountain) 의 이 벽이 울기 위해서는 모든 조건 딱 들어 맞아야 하는가 봅니다. 아마 보실 기회를 놓쳐도 별로 후회는 안 하실 것 입니다.

켄모어 (Canmore) 에 예약해논 Silver Creek Lodge 에 짐을 풀고 벤프시내도 구경하고 저녁도 먹을 겸 벤프로 나왔습니다. 켄모어는 벤프공원에서 약간 떨어져 있기도 하지만 경제가 나빠서인지 거의 반 값에 아주 좋은 곳을 예약할 수 있었습니다. 저녁은 Earls 에서 Mirassou 와인과 곁들어 해산물 링귀니 (Seafood Linguini) ($18 C), 서해 새우 살라드 (West Cost Prawn Salad) ($17C), 소고기 갈비 (Beef Rib) ($25.75) 를 먹었는데 아주 만족 스러웠습니다. Earls 음식점은 케나다 서쪽에만 있는 체인점입니다.

We headed back to Jasper for lunch after visiting Medicine Lake and Maligne Lake. We stopped at Patricia Deli which has a menu board with " Two Pieces of Bread with Heaven in the Middle" and owner who entertains the guests with jokes. They have few tables, but we decided to order for the take-out ($26 C for 4 sandwiches) and have a picnic on the way to Banff. We cam across this old fire station on the way back to our car.

Since we are now ready for the picnic, we were headed to our first stop, Athabasca Falls, about 18 miles from Jasper as we traveled to Banff via Ice Fields Parkway. Athabasca Falls is where Athabasca River coming from the Columbia Glacier about 40 miles (70 Km) south thunders through a narrow gorge. Athabasca Fall is not known for its height at 80 ft (24 m), but it is one of most popular and powerful falls in Canadian Rockies. Having the sandwiches we got at Patricia Deli surrounded by this beautiful scenery is the experience everybody should have. Patricia Deli is a must place if you are in Jasper.

The sight of Athabasca Glacier from Columbia IceFields Visitor's Center is an awesome sight: a tongue of is 3.7 mile (6 Km) long and 0.6 mile (1 Km) wide. But it used to cover the area where the present visitor's center is located about 120 years ago. The glacier currently recedes at a rate 7-10 ft (2-3 m) per year (not suggesting to discuss the global warming in this space). We decided to skip the Snocouch tour because it was getting late and we were not sure if it was worth of $50 (C) to stand on the ice (some people insist that it is a must). It was very windy the day we visited the ice field, but we hiked to the edge of the glacier. We could not climb onto the glacier because of danger, but we thought it was more than enough to see the sight.

Even though the streams at Weeping Wall are usually very small, there was no water coming down over the cliff when we visited. We guess it needs the right conditions for this walls of Cirrus Mountain to weep. You will not regret even if you miss the Weeping Wall.

After checked in at Silver Creek Lodge in Canmore, we went back to Benff for the dinner and some more sightseeing. We were able to reserve the hotel at almost half of normal rate. We guess the bad economy and a little away from Banff helped us to get a good deal. At the Earls for dinner, we had Seafood Linguini ($18 C), West Cost Prawn Salad ($17 C), and Beef Rib ($25.75 C) with the red wine from Mirassou. The dinner was very tasty and very satisfying. Earls is the chain restaurant which most them are located in the western Canada.
