Canada Banff Trip (케나다 벤프 여행) Day 6 -2: Bow Falls, Banff City (여섯째날 2: 보우 폭포, 벤프시가)

보우 폭포 (Bow Falls) 는 벤프 스프링 호텔 (Banff Spring Hotel) 뒤 보우강 (Bow River)과 스프레이강 (Spray River) 합류점 근처에 있습니다.

만약 높은 폭포를 생각하시고 보우 폭포를 방문한다면 아마 실망이 크실 것입니다. 그러나 보우 푹포는 9m 정도의 높지 않은 폭포이지만 거센 물살의 우렁찬 소리가 인상적 입니다. 또한 강을 따라 있는 보도를 여유 있게 걸으시며 폭포, 상류의 급 물살, 런들 (Mt Rundle)산으로 구비치며 흘러가는 강을 구경하시기 바랍니다. 이곳은 마릴린 먼로 주연의 "돌아오지 않는 강" 의 배경으로도 유명한 곳 입니다.

If you visit the Bow Falls expecting a high water falls, you may be in for disappointment. But, even though Bow Falls is not huge with about 30 feet in height, the huge volume of water tumbling downhill is impressive. You may want to take a leisurely walk along the walkway that allows the view of falls, the rapids in upstream and the twisting river toward mountains including Rundle Mountain. This spot is also famous with scenes in "River of No Return" starred by Marilyn Monroe.

주의 하실 것은 벤프시와 벤프 스프링 호텔에서 가깝고, 들리기에 편해 단체 관광객들이 많이 몰려 꽤 복잡해질 수가 있습니다.
One warning is that it could get very crowded with the bus tourists because of the easy access and short distance to the falls from Banff and the hotel.

보우 폭포를 떠나 벤프시로 돌아오다 버펄로 길을 만나 따라가다 보면 갑자기 시야가 트이면서 오른쪽에 주차할 수 있는 공간이 나옵니다. 이곳이 바로 이곳 주민들이 서프라이즈 코너 (아래 사진 왼쪽 중간)라고 부르는 곳이며 역사적인 벤프 스프링 호텔의 유명한 사진들을 찍은 곳이기도 합니다.

After leaving Bow Falls toward Banff, follow Buffalo Street until you see the parking space on the right just after the view opens up. It is locally known as the Surprise Corner (left middle of the picture below) where most of famous pictures have been taken of the historical Fairmont Banff Spring Hotel.

점심도 먹을 겸 다시 벤프시로 돌아와 시가지 구경도 할 겸 벤프 아베뉴(Banff Avenue)를 걸었습니다. 역시 관광지로 선물 가게, 식당, 커피점들이 즐비하군요. 점심은 작은 일식 집인 스시 하우스 (Sushi House)에서 맛있게 먹었습니다. 식당은 스시바 처럼 만들어저 있고 자리가 빌 때까지 좀 기다렸지만 (전날 저녁은 손님이 많아 못 먹었죠) 좁은데 앉아 점심 먹기에 바빠 사진이 없네요.

We came back to Banff to stroll the Banff Avenue and have the lunch. There were gift shops, restaurants and coffee shops lining the street like any other tourist destination. For the lunch, we stopped at the small Japanese restaurant, Sushi House, and the food was surprising and very tasty. The restaurant was designed as a sushi bar and had a limited sitting (This was the place we tried the previous night, but we gave up because of too long wait). It was a short wait for the lunch and forgot to take the pictures. Just too busy eating.

4일간에 걸친 벤프 구경을 끝내고 미국 몬태나 (Montana)에 있는 글레시어 국립공원 (Glacier National Park)으로 돌아 오는 길은 하이웨이 2번 대신 하이웨이 22번을 택했습니다. 이 길이 경치가 더 좋다고 하든군요. 그러나 글쎄요, 벤프 국립공원과 제스퍼 국립공원에서 본 경치들이 너무 좋아서 였는지 돌아 오는 길에서는 별로 "와우(wahoo)" 하는 경치가 없는 것 같네요. 덕분에 찍은 사진도 별로 없고. 그래도 국경을 넘으면서 경계선에서 한장 찍고 해지는 경치가 아름다워 한장 찍었습니다.

만약 하이웨이 22번으로 여행을 하실 것이면 한가지 주의하 실 것이 있습니다. 오랜 간격 동안 주유소나 상점이 없으니 만반의 준비를 하고 떠나십시오. 오는 길에 "국경 전 까지 마지막 주유소"란 간판이 붙은 상점이 있는데 거짓이 아닙니다. 미국 몬태나에 들어 와서도 한참 올 때 까지 정말 마지막 상점이니 만 탱크해서 계속 여행하세요.

Heading back to the Glacier National Park in Montana after 4 days of sightseeing in Banff area, we decided to take Highway 22 instead of Highway 2 since the scenery is suppose to be better along this route. But, it wasn't what we imagined and there wasn't many "wahoo" moments. We think that the views on this road can not be compared to that of Banff and Jasper area. We don't have a lot of pictures to show except the border crossing and a beautiful sunset at the border.

If you plan to travel by Highway 22, you need to prepare before you leave. There are many long stretches without any gas station or store. There is a store with a sign, "The last gas station before the border". Believe it, it is not a joke. You better fill up your car because it is THE last gas station until you are well into Montana.

As the sun was going down, we arrived at the border between Canad and USA. We said a good bye to Canada at the border where both Canadian and American flags are flying.

예약해 놓은 이스트 글레시아 팍(East Glacier Park)에 있는 마운테인 파인 모텔 (Mountain Pine Motel)에 도착하니 밤도 늦었지만 경치에 배가 불러서인지, 아니면 운전하면서 간식을 하도 많이 먹어서인지 오늘은 따로 저녁을 먹을 수가 없었습니다. 모텔은 부부가 운영하는 곳인데 듣던대로 깨끗했습니다 (도착 시간이 생각보다 늦어 졌지만 주인 아저씨가 기다려 주셨습니다).

We arrived at the Mountain Pine Motel in East Glacier Park very late where we had a reservation. We were not sure why, but we were really hungry for the dinner. It may have been because of late hour, or we weren't hungry with the picturesque scenery we took in, or all the snacks we had while driving. The motel was run by a couple and it was very clean as we heard (The owner waited for us even though we arrived later than we expected).

In the epilogue, we will add the places you will regret if you miss in the Banff area, and the places we couldn't visit because of the time.

Canada Banff Trip (케나다 벤프 여행) Day 6 -1: Banff Gondora (여섯째날 1: 벤프 곤돌라)

오늘이 케나다 벤프 (Canada Banff) 지역 방문의 마지막 날 입니다. 그래서 오늘은 벤프시 주변을 시간이 되는대로 둘러보고 케나다를 떠날 예정입니다.  첫 행선지는 벤프시에서 15분 거리에 있는 곤돌라 (Gondora)를 타고 올라 갈 설퍼산 (Sulphur Mountain) 정상입니다.

Since today is our last day in Canada Banff area, we planned to visit the places around the city of Banff as the time allows before we have to leave Canada. The first stop is the Summit of Sulphur Mountain with Gondora ride which is 15 minutes away from Banff.

이 구경은 곤돌라를 타고 설퍼산 정상까지 오르는 8분의 여행으로 시작합니다. 698 m/2292 ft 를 올라 고도 2281 m/7486 ft 에 오르면 벤프, 보우 개곡, 사우좌방으로 보이는 산맥들을 보실 수 있습니다.

This trip starts with 8 minute Gondora ride to the summit of Sulphur Mountain. When you climb 2292 ft/698 m to an elevation of 7486 ft/2281 m, you have unsurpassed view of Banff, Bow Valley and 360 degree view of mountain ranges.

정상 터미날에서 보드워크 (Boardwalk)를 따라서 삼손의 픽 (Samson's Peak)) 과 역사적 유물인 우주 광선 관측소 (Cosmic Ray Station)까지 갈 수 있습니다. 보드워크에서 보이는 전경은 아름답기보다 웅장합니다. 보드워크와 전망대는 자연과 조합되고 방문객들의 동식물들 접촉을 최소화하게 설치 되었습니다. 정상 터미날 식당의 하수 처리까지도 파이프라인을 이용해 벤프시 하수도로 연결 하였습니다.

From the upper terminal, you can follow the boardwalk to Samson's Peak and Cosmic Ray Station National Historic Site. The panoramic view from the boardwalk is not beautiful, but magnificent. The boardwalk and observation decks are designed to blend in with environment and minimize visitor contact with the wildlife and the vegetation. The pipeline is even used to connect the restaurant at the upper terminal with the Banff sewage system.

보드워크에서 찍은 아래 사진 왼쪽 끝 중간에 있는 것이 첫날 들렸던 노퀘이산 (MT Norquay), 그 옆이 스토니 스쿼산 (MT Stoney Squaw), 그 뒤로 케스케이드산 (MT Cascade)이 보이네요. 그리고 노퀘이산 앞으로 트렌스 케나다 하이웨이가 지나 갑니다.

The picture below is taken from the boardwalk. Norquey Mountain where we stopped on the first day in Banff is on the left middle of the picture, next to it is Stony Squaw Mountain and Cascade Mountain is behind them. Trans-Canada Freeway is in front of Norquay Mountain.

사진 한 가운데 있는 산이 턴넬 산 (Tunnel Mountain) 이고 주위로 흐르는 강이 보우 강 입니다. 오른 쪽 위에 있는 것이 저희들은 들리지 못했지만 원주민들의 말로 "영혼의 호수"라고 불리우는 미네완카 호수 (Minnewanka Lake) 입니다.

사진 아래 왼쪽에 있는 것이 벤프 스프링 호텔 (Banff Spring Hotel)이고 호텔 뒤 강 건너 코너 길이 놀람의 코너 전망대 (Surprise Corner Viewpoint) 입니다. 이 코너에 오면 왜 이 코너를 놀람의 코너라 부르는지 이유를 알 게 될 것입니다.

Banff Spring Hotel is at the bottom left of the picture and the corner across the river from the hotel is called the Surprise Corner Viewpoint. You will know why it is called the Surprise Corner when you come to this corner.

가능하면 날씨가 화창한 날 곤돌라 를 타세요. 구름이 끼거나 비가 오면 정상에서 아무 것도 보지 못하고 구름만 보다 내려 오시게 됩니다. 그렇게 되면 본전 생각이 간절 할 것 입니다. 곤돌라를 타고 내려오는데 구름이 끼는 것이 아래 사진 같게 되네요. 많은 시간을 보낸 것 같지 않은데 거진 2 시간을 보냈네요.  아마 그 정도는 시간을 잡으셔야 할 것 입니다.

Please take the Gondora ride in a clear day. If you are up at the summit during cloudy or rainy day, all you could see is the cloud. It might then be a wasting of your money. The picture we took under way down may give some idea what you may see if it is cloudy. We did not think we stayed too long, but it was more than 2 hours. You may want to plan to stay at least that long.

벤프와 제스퍼 부근에 몇 개의 곤돌라가 있고 저희들이 다 타본 것은 아니지만 설퍼산 곤돌라는 꼭 타세요. 30불이 아까웠다는 생각은 안 들더라구요. 정상에서 본 경치가 제 값을 하든군요. 그러나 돈을 절약하는 방법이 있는데 그 것은 정상까지 하이킹해서 올라가면 내려 올 때 곤돌라를 공짜로 타 실 수 있습니다.

There are several Gondora rides in Banff and Jasper area and we did not try all of them, but you should at least ride the Gondora at Sulphur Mountain. We did not regret paying $30C/person for the ride. The view from the top was worth it. But there is a way to save the money. If you hike up to the summit, the Gondora ride coming down is free.

오늘 일정을 시작하기 전에 아침을 먹으러 켄모어 (Canmore)에서 크로산을 잘한다는 집을 찾아 갔는데 문을 닫었드군요. 그러다 찾은 곳이 비머 커피 숍 (Beamer's Coffee Bar) 이었습니다. 커피 맛이 괜찮다고 알려져 있고 특이한 메뉴들이 있어 기대를 했는데 음식들이 별로 드군요. 아래 사진은 호텔 뒤 쪽으로 보이는 경치입니다.

Before starting today's schedule, we were looking for a croissant shop with a good review for the breakfast.  But, unfortunately the store was closed. Our next choice was Beamer's Coffee Bar which had a good review on coffee. Maybe our expectation was too high with some special items on the menu. We did not try their coffee, but we don't recommend their food. The picture below is a mountain view on the back of the hotel.

벤프 국립공원 (Benff National Park)과 제스퍼 국립공원 (Jasper National Park)의 유명한 곳을 찾아 다니다 보니 트렌스 케나다 고속도로 (Trans-Canada Highway)와 아이스 필드 파크웨이 (Icefields Parkway)길에서 보는 경치를 놓치기가 아까워 찍어 두었던 사진들, 그리고 다른 곳에 쓰기가 적당치 않았던 것들을 모았습니다.

It is easy to miss the scenery along the road while traveling between the well known places in Banff National Park and Jasper National Park. Here are the pictures of scenery we did not want to miss while traveling Icefields Parkway and Trans-Canada Highway and the additional information which might be useful when you visit Banff.

93번 하이웨이로도 알려져 있는 아이스 필드 파크웨이 (Icefields Parkway)는 루이스 호수 (Lake Louise) 에서 북쪽으로 제스퍼 (Jasper)까지 이어지는 경치 좋은 도로입니다. 이 도로는 대륙 분수령과 평행으로 가며 벤프 국립공원과 제스퍼 국립공원을지나 갑니다. 이 파크웨이에서 보이는 경치는 아름답다는 것보다 웅장하다는 것이 더 정확한 묘사 일 것입니다. 또한 가는 길에서 보는 경치와 오는 길에서 보는 경치가 다르기 때문에 시간이 허락 하시면 왕복 길을 추천합니다. 파크웨이를 따라가며 중간 중간에 구경할 만 한 곳들의 표시가 있지만 놓지기가 쉬우니 미리 대충 알아 보시고 떠나십시오.

아이스 필드 파크웨이를 지나려면 케나다 국립공원 입장권을 꼭 사셔야하며 이 길에서는 중간에 서비스를 받을 만한 곳이 별로 없으니 이 길에 들어 서기 전에 차를 만탕크하시고 간단한  먹을 거리도 준비하십시오. 그나마 4월에서 10월 사이는 크로싱 (비싼 자동차 연료 팜)과 콜럼비아 빙원 안내소에서 구입이 가능 합니다. 또한 기후가 갑자기 변할 수 있으므로 여름이라도 따뜻하게 입을 수 있는 옷을 준비해 두시는 것이 좋을 듯합니다. 콜럼비아 빙원을 들렸을 때 바람이 얼마나 쎄고 쌀쌀한지 따뜻한 코트가 긴요하게 쓰였습니다.

단 벤프시를 포함하여 국립공원안에서 주차하지 않고 트렌스 케나다 고속도로로 이 지역을 통과한다면 국립공원 입장권을 사지 않으셔도 됩니다.

The Icefields Parkway, also known as Highway 93, is a scenic road which links Lake Louise to Jasper to the north. It parallels the Continental Divide crossing Banff National Park and Jasper National Park. The scenery from the parkway is not only beautiful, but majestic. If the time allows, it is recommended to make an round trip since the scenery from each way is quite different. The places to stop and view the scenery along the parkway are marked. But you need to study where they are before you leave since the markers are easy to miss.

You must purchase a Canadian national park permit to travel on the Icefields Parkway. And the services along the parkway are limited (meaning that you should fill your car tank and prepare some snacks before entering the parkway). From April to October, the limited services are available at the Crossing (will pay a lot more for fuel) and Columbia Icefield Visitor Center. Even in summer, the weather can change at any time and the visitors should prepare for the unexpected. While visiting Columbia Icefield, we were glad that we brought the warm coats since the wind was very strong and it was very chilly.

However, you don't have to buy the national park permit if you are passing through the area without stopping at any place in the national park including the city of Banff.
