요호 국립공원 (Yoho National Park) - 에메랄드 호수 (Emerald Lake), 천연다리 (Natural Bridge)

"요호"란 크리족 인디안 (Cree Indian)들이 경외감을 뜻하는 말이라 합니다. 에메랄드 호수 (Emerald Lake)를 보았을 때 저절로 나온  감탄사로 그 이유를 이해 할 수 있었습니다. 필드(Field) 에서 서쪽으로 2 마일/3Km 가면 오른 쪽에 있는 에메랄드 길을 따라가면 에메랄드 호수와 천연다리가 있습니다.

"Yoho" is a Cree Indian word expressing awe. We could understand the reason for the name with the exclamation we let out when we saw Emerald Lake. Emerald Lake and Natural Bridge is on the Emerald Lake Road whose entrance is on the right at 2 miles west from Field, Alberta.

에메랄드 호수/Emerald Lake

요호 국립공원에서 가장 많이 감탄사를 발하게 하는 곳이 아마 에메랄드 호수 일 것입니다. 또한 요호 국립 공원에서 가장 큰 호수이며 1882년에 톰 윌슨 (네, 루이스 호수로 이름이 바뀌기전에 루이스 호수에도 똑 같은 이름을 붙었던 사람임) 이 발견하였습니다. 이 아름다운 호수는 전나무 숲과 3,000 m 가 넘는 봉우리들로 둘려 싸여 있습니다. 태평양에서 동쪽으로 밀려 오는 구름들이 대륙 분수령의 높은 산을 넘으면서 비가 많이 내리는 지역들이 생깁니다. 그런 이유로 호수의 동쪽과 서쪽 지역에서 자라는 식물들, 물과 기상이 다릅니다.

이 호수물의 독특한 초록색을 보시면 왜 이 호수가 에메랄드 호수라 명하여 졌는지를 쉽게 알 수 있습니다. 이 지역의 다른 호수들 같이 호수로 밀려 들어오는 돌가루에 의해 호수 색갈이 그렇게 비추어지는 것입니다. 특이 한 것은 햇빛이 없어도 호수물의 초록 색갈이 밝게 보인다는 것입니다. 벤프 쪽 보다는 이곳을 찾는 방문객들이 적어 좀 더 유유히 둘러 볼 수 있는 곳이기도 합니다.

Emerald Lake is one of the most admired destinations in Yoho National Park. It is the largest lake in Yoho National Park and was discovered by Tom Wilson (Yes, the same guy who gave the same name to Lake Louise before the name change) in 1882. This beautiful lake is surrounded by a forest of Englemann spruce, as well as many peaks over 9800 ft (3,000 m). The clouds moving eastward from the pacific provides pockets of wet belt as it comes over the high peaks of the Continental Divide. It causes the vegetation, the water, and the atmosphere on west side and east side of the lake to be different. 

It is easy to see why Emerald Lake got it's name because of the unique green color of it's water. The color is caused by the rock flour similar to other lakes in the parks. The green glow of water is stunningly bright with or without the sunshine. You may be able to spent the time more leisurely at Emerald Lake since the number of visitors is less than that of visitors in Banff area.

모레인 호수와 루이스 호수에서 생각보다 더 많은 시간을 보냈고 점심 먹으면서 시간을 많이 보내 요호 국립공원을 갈 것이냐 망설였습니다. 그러나 에메랄드 호수를 본 후 그 호수물 색갈을 마음에서 떨쳐 버릴 수 없는 것이 가기로 한 결정을 잘 했다는 생각이네요.

Because of the additional time we spent at Moraine Lake and Lake Louise and the delay at the restaurant, we debated whether to skip the Yoho National Park. But, we were glad that we decided to visit Yoho National Park. After the visit, we just could not erase the color of Emerald Lake from our mind. 


천연다리/Natural Bridge

푹포 같이 쏟아 지는 발차기 말 (Kicking Horse) 강물이 암석의 갈라진 틈을 점점 벌리면서 노두 밑으로 강물이 흐르면서 평평한 암석 다리를 만든 것이 천연다리 (Natural Bridge) 입니다. 보는 각도에 따라서는 다리가 아니라 그저 바위들이 쐐기 같이 박혀 있는 것 같이 보이기도 합니다. 천연다리 전망대에서는 여러 각도로 이 다리를 볼 수 있습니다.

Torrents of the Kicking Horse River have widened fissures in the rock until the water was diverted below the outcrop and left a solid rockbed leaving a flat-rock bridge which is the Natural Bridge. Depending on the vintage point, it looks more like rocks wedged together. You can view the bridge from the different vintage points from the Natural Bridge Lookout.

초록빛 색갈의 에메랄드 호수에 빠져들어 아깝게도 타카카우 폭포에 들릴 시간을 놓첬네요.
Being carried away by the unique green color of Emerald Lake, we lost the track of time and missed the opportunity to visit the Takakkaw Falls.

벤프로 돌아와 인터넷에서 평이 좋은 일본 음식점을 들렸는데 손님이 너무 많아 일식 부페인 마키에 들렸습니다. 그러나 시간이 너무 늦어 부페는 안된다고 하여 그냥 메뉴에서 주문했습니다. 옆 테이블에서는 계속 부페 음식을 주문하고 있는데도요. 주문한 우동/뎀푸라와 스시는 보통 정도였고 스시의 신선도는 산속의 식당에서 기대할 수 밖에 없는 정도 였습니다. 가격은 넷이서 108불 이었습니다.

We stopped at a Japanese restaurant with good review on the Internet, but it was too busy and the wait time was too long. Hence, we decided to try the Japanese buffet restaurant, Maki. But, we were told that it is too late to order the buffet even though the next table was still ordering from the buffet menu. We have tried the Noodle and Tempura Combo and Sushi Special and the freshness of fish was about what we expected in the mountain region. The dinner costed $108 C for four of us.

월남전쟁 참전용사 기념비/Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall

"벽"이라고도 불리는 월남전쟁 참전용사 기념비는 1969에서 1970년에 월남 전쟁에 상등병으로 참여했던 좐 스쿠룩 (John Scruggs) 의 계획 이었습니다. 1979년에 Scruggs 씨와 다른 참전 용사들이 정부의 도움 없이 개인들의 기부금으로만 필요한 자금을 준비하였으며 1981년에 1,421 명의 응모자 중에서 우승 디자인이 선정 되었습니다. 우승자는 예일 대학 건축학과 학생인 21 살의 마야 잉 린 (Maya Ying Lin) 이었습니다. 두면으로 되어있는 V 자 모양의 각 면의 길이는 75.2 m (246.75 ft) 이고 인도에서 수입해온 70 개의 화강석 벽판으로 만들어졌습니다. 58,272 명의 전사자와 행방 불명자들의 이름이 새겨져 있으며 전사자 중에 적어도 25,000 명 이상이 20세 또는 그 이하의 젊은이 들이었습니다.

"The wall" was the idea of Jan Scruggs, a corporal who served in Vietnam in 1969-1970. In 1979, he and group of veterans raised funds for the project from the private contribution without using federal funds and a winning design was chosen among 1,421 entries in 1981. The winner was Maya Ying Lin who was 21 year old architecture student from Yale University. Each of the V-shaped monument's two sections is and consists of 70 inscribed black granite panels which came from India. The number of names inscribed is 58,272 who died or remain missing from the war. At least 25,000 of the dead were 20 years old or younger.

해병대 전쟁 기념비는 이오지마 기념비(Iwo Jima Memorial)로 더 잘 알려져있습니다. 그 이유는 AP 사진 작가인 죠 로젠살 (Joe Rosenthal)이 6명의 해병대원이 이오지마에 성조기를 올리는 것을 찍은 사진을 모델로 하였기 때문입니다. 이 동상이 2차 대전 영웅들을 모델로 하였지만 이 기념비는 1775년 이래 목숨을 바친 모든 해병대원을 추모하기 위한 것이며 해병대의 큰 대전이 동상 토대에 새겨져 있습니다. 이 기념비는 세계에서 가장 큰 청동상이며 높이가 23.8m (78 ft), 무게가 100 톤이 됩니다. 이 동상은 108 개의 조각품을 안쪽에서볼트로 조리거나 용접하여 붙여 만든 것 입니다. 헬멧 지경이 1.1 m (3.5 ft) 이고 깃대 길이가 18.3 m (60 ft) 입니다.

The Marine Corps War Memorial is referred to by many as the Iwo Jima Memorial. This is because it is based on a photo snapped by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal as six marines raised the US flag on the island of Iwo Jima. Although the sculpture is modeled after World War II heroes, it actually memorializes all Marines who have given their lives since 1775. Dates and locations of every major Marine Corps engagement are etched around the base of the monument. It is the largest bronze statue in the world, standing 78 ft (23.8 m) tall, with a weight of 100tons. There are 108 parts in the sculpture that are bolted and welded together from the inside. The helmets are 3.5 ft (1.1 m) in diameter and flagpole is 60 ft (18.3 m) long.

루이스 호수 (Lake Louise) 구경을 끝내고 보우 호수 (Bow Lake)와 페이토 호수 (Peyto Lake)로 가기 전에 루이스 호수 마을 (Louis Lake Village)에 있는 마운테인 식당 (Mountain Restaurant)에 점심을 먹으로 들렸습니다. 이 식당을 고른 특별한 이유가 있었든 것은 아니고 식당 앞에 날리는 한국, 미국, 케나다 국기들이 저희들의 눈길을 끌었습니다. 또한 고속 도로 입구가 가까웠기도 했구요.

이 식당 메뉴에 불고기가 있었지만 이 산골 주방장이 만드는 한국 요리를 믿을 수가 없어 저희들은 먹어 보지 않았습니다. 그러나 저희들이 먹어본 새우 살라드 ($10 C)와 생선과 감자튀김 ($12 C)은 먹을만 했습니다. 저희들이 들린 날은 종업원들이 모자라서인지 기다리는 시간이 꽤 길었습니다. 덕분에 친구들과 즐거운 이야기를 나눌 시간은 있었지만 다음 여정이 좀 촉박해 졌습니다.

Before we headed to Bow Lake and Peyto Lake, we stopped for the lunch at the Mountain Restaurant at Lake Louise Village. There was no special reason to stop at this place. We choose it because three flags of Canada, USA and Korea in front of the restaurant caught our eyes. It was also close to the highway entrance.

The restaurant has a Korean style beef dish (Bul-Go-Gi), but we took a pass because we were not sure if we could trust the cook. But, The shrimp salad ($10) and fish and chips ($12) were OK. The service was slow since they were short staffed on the day we visited. It gave a time to enjoy being with friends, but it cut into our time to spend on our next stops.

루이스 호수 출구에서 제스퍼 쪽으로 약 30 분 정도 더 가면 고속 도로 옆으로 보우 호수가 나옵니다. 보우 호수는 벤프 국립공원에서 가장 큰 호수 중에 하나이며 보우 강의 상류이기도 합니다. 호수 색갈은 초록색 보자는 더 청색이었지만 이 호수 색갈은 철에 따라 변합니다. 저희들은 올뺌이 표인지라 아침 햇살이 산에 부딫혀 호수에 보이는 것을 구경하는 일찌감치 포기 했습니다.

In about 30 minutes toward Jesper from the Lake Louise turn-off, you will find Bow Lake right beside the highway. Bow Lake is one of the largest lakes in Banff National Park and is the source of the Bow River. The color of lake is a little more blue than green, but it could change throughout the season. Since we gave up to be an early bird, we missed the opportunity to take the picture of the early sun hitting the mountain over Bow Lake.

페이토 호수의 상징적 사진/The Iconic View of Peyto Lake

보우 정상에 있는 전망대에서 보는 페이토 호수가 제일 좋은 경치이지만 그러나 볼수 있는 곳은 제한돼 있습니다. 그러나 전망대 밑에 보이는 페이토 호수는 하루의 시간과 계절에 따라 호수 색갈이 변하는 아름다운 호수입니다. 페이토 호수는 루이스 호수에서 40 Km/26 마일 북쪽에 있으며 세계에서 제일 아름다운 호수라 주장하는 사람들도 많읍니다. 이 호수의이름은 사냥꾼이자 깅 안내인 이었던 빌 페이토의 이름을 따서 지었다고 합니다.

호수 남쪽에 있는 바르타 빙하가 페이토 호수 물의 공급원이고 암석 가루가 호수 색갈의 원인 입니다. 저희들은 가보지 않았지만 페이토 호수가로 내려가기 위해서는 표시가 되어 있지 않은 길을 따라 내려가면 된다고 합니다.

The view from the overlook is the best view of lake, but it is limited to well established viewpoints. Peyto Lake below the lookout is a beautiful lake whose color changes with the time of day and the seasons. Peyto Lake is located at 26 miles/40 Km north of Lake Louise and some would argue that it is the most beautiful lake in the world. It is named after Bill Peyto who was an early trapper and trail guide in Banff area.

At the south end of the lake, the Wapta Glacier provides the water for Peyto Lake as well as its color caused by the rock flour. We did not tried, but there is unmarked trails leading to Peyto's shores.

모레인 호수 (Moraine Lake)를 떠나 세계 10경 또는 11경 중에 하나라는 루이스 호수 (Lake Louise)로 내려 왔습니다. 이 루이스 호수의 아름다움에 반해 유키 구라모토 (Yuhki Kuramoto)가 작곡한 "Lake Louise"란 곡입 니다.  즐거운 시간 되세요.
Our next stop after visiting Moraine Lake is Lake Louise which is 10th or 11th (depending on who is counting) most beautiful place in the world. The beauty of Lake Louise inspired Yuhki Kuramoto to compose a music piece called "Lake Louise". Enjoy his performance.

먼저 주차장에서 호수 왼쪽으로 나 있는 산책길을 따라 페어뷰 망루(Fairview Lookout)로 향했습니다. 이 길은 생각보다 언덕 길이 가파랐고 (고산지에 가파른 언덕 길이라 친구 하나가 자주 쉬어야 했습니다) 잘못하면 망루로 가는 길을 놓칠 수도 있습니다. 한 낮인데도 숲 속에 햇빛이 들지를 않아 길 주변에 이끼가 쫙 깔려 있는 곳이 많았습니다. 그러나 망루에서 내려다 보이는 루이스 호수와 샤또 루이스 호수 전경은 정말 아름답습니다. 망루에서 본 야생 동물은 무엇을 먹어 그런지 살이 통통히 졌네요. 관광객들이 주지 말라는 먹이들을 주어서 그런지도 모르지만.

From the parking lot, we took the trail on the left of lake leading to Fairview Lookout. The trail was steeper than we thought (one of friends had to rest often because of steepness and high altitude) and is to miss the turnoff to Fairview Lookout. There was almost no sun lights on the trail because of dense woods and there were number of areas where moss is spread out like a carpet along the trail. But the panoramic view of Lake Louise and Chateau Lake Louise from the lookout is something you don't want to miss. We saw a fat wild animal living under the lookout. We guess that it became fat because of the foods fed by the visitors even though they are not suppose to feed the animals.

페어뷰 망루에서 내려와 첫 눈에 들어온 루이스 호수는 사진 작가들이 찍은 멋진 사진들을 보아와서 그런지 생각보다 못했습니다.  저희들에게는 "또 다른 호수"인 모레인 호수가 더 마음에 담겨져 있습니다. 이 호수는 원래 원주민들은 "작은 물고기의 호수", 이 호수를 처음 발견한 톰 윌슨은 "에머랄드 호수"라고 불렀으나 빅토리아 여왕의 딸 루이스 공주의 이름을 따서 루이스 호수라고 불리우게 되었다고 합니다.

왼쪽으로 페어뷰 산과 오른 쪽으로 와이트 산을 끼고 호수 뒤로 빙하를 안고 있는 빅토리아 산이 담긴 모습이 가장 잘 알려져 있는 사진인데 이 사진을 찍기에 명당 자리로 알려져 있는 곳은 호수 왼쪽 보트 하우스가 있는 곳입니다. 그러나 유명한 만큼 관광객들이 많으면 소위 명당 자리에서 사진 찍는 것은 시간이 좀 걸릴 수 있습니다. 특히 단체 관광객들이 교대로 사진 찍는 것이 끝날 때 까지 기다린다는 것은 인내를 요구하기도 합니다. 좋은 색갈의 사진을 찍기 위해서는 오후보다는 오전이 좋다고 하네요. 저희는 오전에 들렸지만 모레인 호수에 있을 때만해도 맑았던 하늘이 이 곳에 오니 아쉽게도 구름이 끼어 산들이 호수에 반사되어 있는 그 유명한 사진을 찍을 기회를 놓쳤습니다.

The first sight of Lake Louise was not as impressive as we expected. The reason may be that we were so much accustomed to the beautiful pictures taken by the photographers. Moraine Lake, the "other" lake, was more embedded in our minds. The lake was called "Lake of Little Fishes" by the native Indians and "Emerald Lake" by Tom Wilson who originally found the lake, but it was changed to "Lake Louise" after the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria.

The famous picture of Lake Louise is the glacier covered Mt Victoria behind the lake flanked by Mt Fairview on the left and Mt Whyte on the right. The best place to take the picture is near the boat house on the left side of the Lake. It could be a long wait to take a picture from this spot if there are a lot of visitors. It may even require you to have some patience when members of tour group take turn to take the pictures. It is recommended to visit the lake early in the morning for capture better color of lake. We were sad that we missed the opportunity to capture the lake with reflection of mountains. The sky turned cloudy even though it was sunny and beautiful while visiting Moraine Lake.

많은 사람들이 루이스 호수 (Lake Louise) 와 모레인 호수 (Moraine Lake)를 구경할려면 일찍가라고 하여 멕도날드에서 간단하게 아침을 먹고 출발했습니다. 오늘의 첫 행선지는 루이스 호수 옆에 있는 "또 하나의 호수"라고 불리우는 모레인 호수입니다. 이 호수는 루이스 호수 마을에서 8.5 마일/14 Km 떨어져 있습니다. 모레인 호수는 빙하가 녹아 흘러 들어와 생긴호수로 6월 중순경 호수 물이 차면 청록색의 빛갈을 보입니다. 이 물 색갈은 주위에 있는 암석 가루들이 호수에 흘러 들어와 까라 앉은 것이 청색과 녹색만 반사 시키기 때문에 생기는 현상입니다. 이 색갈은 말로 묘사할 수 없어 보아야만 믿을 수 있습니다.

파킹장 옆에 있는 록파일 (Rockpile) 길을 따라 꼭대기에 오르면 모레인 호수와 호수를 싸고 있는 10개의 봉우리들 Ten Peaks)의 최상의 경치가 눈 앞에 펼쳐집니다. 10개의 봉우리는 "20불짜리 경관"이라고도 불리우는데 그 이유는 케나다 20불짜리 지폐 뒷면에 이 봉우리들 사진이 있었기 때문입니다. 이곳이 또한 케나다에서 제일 많이 사진을 찍는 곳이라고 합니다. 저희들도 꼭대기에 올라 한번 보는 것만으로도 그 경관에 푹 빠지고 말았습니다. 록파일 길을 올라 갈 때 갈 곳만 생각치 마시고 중간에 서서 왼쪽에 있는 계곡들도 만끽하면서 오르십시오. 

모레인 호수로 가는 길은 여름 동안만 열려 있습니다. 저희들이 갔던 날은 단체 관광객들이 없어 다행 이었지만 무척 혼잡할 수 있으니 아침 일찍(사진 찍기에 좋은 시간)이나 오후 늦게 들리십시오.

Since everybody recommends to be at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake as early as possible, we decided on a quick breakfast at the McDonald. Our first stop today is Moraine Lake known as "the other" lake next to Lake Louise. It is about 8.5 miles/14 Km from Lake Louise Village. Moraine Lake is a glacially-fed lake and it reflects a shade of turquoise which is in full color after about middle of June. The color is due to the reflation of light off the rock flour deposited into the lake. It is the color that must be seen to be believed !!

When you reach the top of the Rockpile trail (remember you are climbing the rock piles as the name indicates) from the parking lot, the best view of the lake and surrounding valley of the Ten Peaks is waiting for you. The Ten Picks is also known as the Twenty Dollar View because it was featured on back of the Canadian $20 bill. It is one of the most photographed locations in all of Canada. We took one look from the Rockpile and we were hooked. While climbing up the rock slide trail, take a break and enjoy the view of valley on the left.

The road to Moraine Lake is usually open only during the summer. Fortunately, on the day we visited, the crowd was not as bad as we expected (lucky - no tour buses), but it is recommended to visit it either very early morning or late afternoon.

호수 입구에 있는 곰 모피가 말하듯 모레인 호수 근처는 회색곰들이 서식하는 곳 입니다.
The Moraine Lake area has been known as a home for grizzly bear whose fur is shown at the entrance to the lake.
