라센 화산 국립공원에서 가장 주목할 만한 열수 지역 중 하나인 Sulphur works 는 코옴 야마니 (Kohm Yah-mah-nee) 방문자 센터에서 북쪽으로 1.6km 떨어진 곳에 있습니다. 라센 화산 국립공원에는 분기공(증기 분출구), 끓는 샘, 끓는 진흙탕 등 네 가지 지열 지형 중 세 가지가 있습니다. 그 중 Sulphur works 의 주요 볼거리는 인도 옆에서 부글부글 끓는 지름 1.5m의 끓는 진흙탕 입니다. 2006년에 지구 지각의 일부가 붕괴되기 시작했고, 2008년에는 현재 방문객들이 볼 수 있는 진흙 분출구가 형성 되었습니다. 분기공에서는 증기 기둥이 도로 위로 솟아오릅니다. 뜨겁고 산성인 물이 화산암을 통과하면서 형성된 점토 광물은 노란색, 주황색, 붉은색 등 다채로운 색깔로 주변 지역을 물들입니다. Sulphur works

Sulphur Works, one of the most notable hydrothermal areas in Lassen Volcanic National Park, is one mile north of the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center. Lassen Volcanic National Park boasts three of the four geothermal features that exist: fumaroles (steam vents), boiling springs, and boiling mudpots. The primary attraction at Sulphur Works – a boiling mudpot five feet across – bubbles next to a sidewalk. A section of the earth’s crust began collapsing in 2006, and by 2008, the current mudpot visitors can see was formed. Pillars of steam from fumaroles rise across the road. Clay minerals, formed when hot, acidic water percolates through volcanic rock, splash their vibrant palate of yellow, orange and red across the landscape. (Review 2*)

범패스 헬 트레일 (Bumpass Hell Trail)(4*)

탐방 가능 시기: 대략 6월부터 10월까지. 참고로 라센(Lassen) 지역의 고지대에는 겨울철에 최대 30피트(약 9미터)의 눈이 쌓이기도 합니다.

거리: 3마일 (왕복)

지형: 초반 1마일은 완만한 오르막길이며, 이후 분지까지 200피트(약 60미터) 정도 내려가는 구간이 이어집니다.

난이도: 보통

범패스 헬 트레일(Bumpass Hell Trail)은 공원 내 최대 규모의 열수 지대로 이어지는 길입니다. 인기 있는 코스인 만큼 주차 공간이 제한적이며, 특히 주말에는 오전 중반부터 오후 초반 사이에 주차장이 가득 차는 경우가 많습니다. 간이 화장실은 트레일 입구에만 있으며, 트레일이나 분지 내부에는 화장실이 없습니다. 공원 내 모든 트레일에는 애완동물 출입이 금지되어 있습니다.

공원 남서쪽 입구에서 7마일 떨어진 범패스 헬 주차장에서 시작되는 잘 정비된 탐방로를 따라가면 지열 지대에 도착할 수 있습니다. 이동 중에 짧은 샛길로 빠지면 멋진 산봉우리들의 전경을 감상할 수 있는데, 이 봉우리들은 사실 약 50만 년 전에 폭발했던 거대한 화산인 '테하마 산(Mount Tehama)'의 잔해입니다.

범패스 헬에 가까워지면 가장 먼저 코끝으로 그 존재를 감지하게 됩니다. 미네랄이 풍부한 물에서 자연적으로 발생하는 가스로 인한 썩은 달걀 냄새가 진동하기 때문입니다. 공원 내 최대 규모의 분기공(fumarole)인 '빅 보일러(Big Boiler)'에서 뿜어져 나오는 고속 증기의 온도는 화씨 322도(섭씨 약 161도)에 달하는 것으로 측정되었으며, 이는 세계에서 가장 뜨거운 분기공 중 하나입니다. 범패스 헬에 설치된 높은 탐방로 덕분에, 과거 불운을 겪었던 범패스 씨와 달리 방문객들은 이곳과 그 밖의 위험하면서도 경이로운 지열 지형 주변을 안전하게 둘러볼 수 있습니다.

Bumpass Hell Trail (4*)

Season: Approximately June through October. Note that the higher elevations of Lassen can get up to 30 feet of snow during the winter.

Terrain: Gradual climb first mile then 200-foot descent into basin

Difficulty: moderate

Bumpass Hell Trail provides access to the largest hydrothermal area in the park. Parking for this popular trail is limited and is often full mid-morning to early afternoon, especially on weekends. Vault toilets are available only at the trailhead, there are no restrooms on the trail or in the basin. Pets are not permitted on any park trails.

A well-marked trail from the Bumpass Hell parking area, seven miles from the park’s southwest entrance, leads visitors to the geothermal site. Along the way, a short spur trail leads to a stunning panorama of peaks—actually the remnants of a massive volcano called Mount Tehama, which exploded some 500,000 years ago.

It’s your nose that will tip you off first when you near Bumpass Hell. The rotten-egg smell from naturally occurring gases rising from the mineral-rich waters is pervasive. The temperature of the high-velocity steam emitted from Big Boiler, the largest fumarole in the park, has been measured to be as hot as 322 degrees Fahrenheit, making it one of the hottest fumaroles in the world. Bumpass Hell’s elevated trail lets you walk safely around it and the rest of the dangerous but wondrous geothermal oddities, unlike poor Mr. Bumpass.

헬렌 호수

레이크 헬렌(Lake Helen)은 빙하호로, 산봉우리와 나무들의 모습을 완벽하게 비춰내곤 합니다. 이 호수의 놀라운 푸른 빛깔은 호수 물에 포함된 독특한 미네랄 성분에서 비롯됩니다. 해발 약 8,200피트의 고지대에 위치해 있어 한여름까지도 눈과 얼음이 남아 있는 경우가 많습니다. 호수 동쪽에 있는 피크닉 구역은 점심 식사나 휴식을 취하기에 아주 좋은 장소입니다. (평가 3*)

Lake Helen

Lake Helen is a glacial lake and it often reflects the mountain peaks and trees perfectly. Its incredible blue color comes from the unique mineral content of the lake. Since the lake is at a high elevation at around 8,200 feet, it often has snow and ice into mid-summer. The picnic area to the east is a great spot to stop for lunch or break. (Review 3*)

공원 근처에 저녁 먹을 곳도 많지가 않아 적당히 저녁을 때우자고 들린 곳인데 치킨 랩 스페셜(14불)과 트라이팁 샌드위치(20불)는 예상외로 맛있었어요. 추천합니다. (평점 3*)

Since there aren't many restaurants around the national park, we stopped here for a quick meal without any expectations. But Chicken Wrap Special ($14.00) and Tri Tip Sandwich ($20.00) were excellent. We highly recommend it. (Review 3*)

편의시설이 좀 부족한 오래된 모텔이지만 라센 국립공원 근처에는 호텔 선택이 많지 않으니 공원 근처에 머물기에는 좋은 곳입니다. 옆에 있는 편의점이 호텔 체크인 데스크 역할도 합니다. 종업원이 좀 무뚝뚝하지만. (평점 2*)

It is an old motel with limited amenities, but it is a good choice if you want to stay close to the park since there aren’t many choices near the Lassen NP. The general store is also the check in desk for the hotel. (Review 2*)

오늘 일정을 시작하기 전에 모텔에 있는 식당에서 아침을 먹었는데 이것이 오늘 일정의 제일 큰 잘못이기를 바랬습니다. 종업원 혼자서 요리, 손님 접대, 카운터 일을 보느라 저희들의 아침 꽤 심하게 태워서 별로 먹을 것이 없었습니다.

Before starting our day, we had breakfast at the motel restaurant, and I hoped that would turn out to be the biggest mistake of the day. A single employee was handling the cooking, serving, and the counter. He was so busy that our breakfast ended up being quite badly burnt, leaving us with very little to eat.

Difficulty: easy

The area gets its name from the sheer destruction caused by the 1915 eruption, which swept away forests and left behind SUV-sized volcanic boulders - some of which were still hot when they landed. It is located roughly 10 miles from the park's Northwest Entrance on the Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway. Although it was once a barren landscape, more than a hundred years later, forests have naturally recovered in many parts of the area. (Review 3*)

Loomis Museum

The Loomis Museum was built in 1927 by Benjamin Franklin Loomis, a local homesteader and photographer who played a significant role in the establishment of the national park. In 1929, he donated the museum and 40 acres of surrounding lands to the National Park Service. Since then, the structure has been used as an interpretational facility, offering visitors the area's history and natural features. It includes impressive pictures of the 1914 Lassen eruption. Unfortunately, the museum was closed on the day we visited.

리플렉션 레이크 (Reflection Lake)

리플렉션 레이크 트레일은 루미스 레인저 스테이션 주차장에서 라센 피크 하이웨이를 건너면 있습니다. 이 곳은 릴리 폰드 주변 순환 코스의 시작점이기도 합니다. 이 트리엘에서는 라센 피크의 전망이 제한적이기 때문에 많은 방문객들이 들리지 않으므로 호수를 혼자서 만끽할 수 있습니다. (평가 3*)

Reflection Lake Trail

The Reflection Lake Trail is located across Lassen Peak Highway from the parking area outside the Loomis Ranger Station, which is also the same trailhead for the loop around Lily Pond. Because the views of Lassen Peak here are more limited, many visitors overlook the lake and you may have the lake all by yourself.(Review 3*)

Manzanita Lake

Surface: Firm dirt with tree roots and exposed rock in places

Manzanita Lake sits at an elevation of 5,846 feet at the base of Chaos Crags, near the NW entrance of Lassen Volcanic National Park. It is a favorite lake of photographers and the most photographed lake in the park. The views of Lassen Peak on the Manzanita Lake Trail continue for quite some distance on the west side, offering hikers and photographers numerous unique vantage points for taking beautiful photos of the lake and the peak! Near sunset, the lighting is perfect for photographers to capture the reflections of Lassen Peak on the lake.(Review 3*)

맥아더-버니 폭포 기념 주립공원

주차비: 9 불

폭포 전망대는 주차장에서 45미터(150피트) 정도 걸어가면 나옵니다. 38미터(129피트) 높이의 폭포수는 물이 어디에서 쏫아지는지 궁금하게 합니다. 이 폭포는 버니 크릭(Burney Creek)에서 떨어지는 폭포와 용암 동굴을 통해 흐르는 물줄기로 이루어져 있으며, 이끼 사이로 물이 커튼처럼 흘러내립니다. 건조한 여름철에도 하루에 약 3억 7천 9백만 리터(1억 갤런)에 달하는 엄청난 양의 물이 끊임없이 쏟아져 내립니다. 제26대 대통령 테디 루스벨트가 이 폭포를 "세계 8대 불가사의"라고 불렀던 것도 당연합니다!

프라이머리 폭포 순환 트레일(Primary Falls Loop Trail)은 걷기 편하지만, 이곳을 방문하는 주된 이유는 폭포이기 때문에 트레일은 하지 않아도 되겠습니다. 트레일 후반부는 폭포 옆를 따라 이어지기 때문에 폭포를 제대로 볼 수 있는 구간은 거의 없기 때문입니다. (평점 4*)

McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park

Parking $9.00

The overlook for the waterfall is 150 feet walk from the parking area. It seems that the water for the 129 foot waterfall seems to come out of nowhere. The waterfall is fed by Burney Creek and by subliminal flow through lava tubes, where the water oozes out of the moss in curtains. And it provides an almost constant flow rate of 100 million gallons (379 million liters) per day, even during the dry summer months. It’s no wonder 26th President Teddy Roosevelt dubbed it “the eighth wonder of the world”!

Primary Falls Loop Trail is nice and easy, but the waterfall is the reason for the visit, you may skip the trail. You barely see the waterfall since the second half of the trail runs adjustant to the waterfall.(Review 4*)

이곳은 온라인 평판도 꽤 괜찮고 고속도로로 가는 길에 위치해 있어서 점심을 먹으러 들렀습니다. 치킨 스트립과 치킨 샐러드를 주문했는데(총액: 31달러), 음식 맛은 다른 후기들만큼 좋지는 않았습니다. (평점 2*)

Since this palace has a decent online review and is on the way back to the highway, we decided to stop for lunch. We ordered Chicken strip and chicken salad (total: $31.00). But the food wasn't as good as other reviews. (Review 2*)
