Driving Cross Country (미국 대륙횡단) - Virginia Trip & Restaurant (버지니아 여행, 맛집)

대륙횡단의 첫날은 스카이라인 드라이브 (Skyline Drive, Virginia)를 따라 버지니아 쉐난도 국립공원(Shenandoah National Park, Virginia)을 지난 후 자연 다리 (Natural Bridge)를 구경하고 버지니아 데일빌 (Daleville, Virginia)에서 하루 밤을 묵을 여정입니다.

For the first day of cross country trip, we plan to drive south following the Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park and stay overnight at Daleville, Virginia after the stop at the Natural Bridge.

산등성이를 따라 딱아진 스카이라인 드라이브 (Skyline Drive, Virginia)는  봄에 제일 경치가 좋다고하고 55 Km 속도 제한으로 통과하는데 너무 오래 걸릴 것 같아 다른 길을 택할 까도 했지만 이번 기회를 놓지면 다시 기회가 없을 것 같아 이 길을 택했습니다. 스카이라인 드라이브를 지날려면 입장료를 내야합니다.

가는 날이 장날이라고 하나요. 고산지대를 지나는데도 더위 기록을 깨는101도를 넘나드는 더위가 기승을 부리는 날씨입니다. 덕분에 스카이라인 드라이브와 평행하게 가는 애팔래치아 산책로 등 생각했던 하이킹도 많이 생략해야 했습니다. 애팔래치아 산책로는 메인 주에서 조지아 주까지 3500 Km에 이르는 세상에서 가장 긴 산책로 입니다. 또 전망대들도 많이 그냥 지나쳤습니다.  이 길에는 75 군데의 전망대가 있을 뿐아니라 몇 군데 전망대에서 보는 전경들이 비슷 비슷하기도 했구요.

Since the Skyline Drive built along the ridge of mountains is most beautiful in the Spring according to the locals and has the speed limit of 35 mph, we were thinking about taking an alternative route, but we decided to take the Skyline Drive. We figured that we may not have another chance to drive through the Skyline Drive. There is an entrance fee to drive through Skyline Drive.

It was a record breaking hot day which the temperature was hovering 101 degree in the mountain region. 냐Since much of the Skyline Drive parallels the Appalachian Trail, we planned the hiking along few trails. But, we decide to skip the hiking because of the hot weather. The Appalachian Trail is the world's longest marked trail at 2175 miles from Maine to Georgia. We also skipped few overlooks since there are 75 overlooks and the views from the overlooks were somewhat similar.

레저용이나 켐핑용 자동차들도 이 길을 갈 수 있지만 3.8 미터 높이의 메리의 돌 턴넬(Mary's Rock Tunnel) 을 지냐야하니 조심하시기를.
RVs and campers are allowed, but, be careful,  you need to clear Mary's Rock Tunnel at 12 ft 8 in height.

스카이라인 드라이브 남쪽 입구를 지나 불루 릿지 파크웨이로 들어서서 록 포인트 전망대와 20분 절벽을 들렸습니다. 이 곳에서 내려다 보이는 경치는 생각치 않게 장관이었습니다.
After we left Skyline Drive at the southern entrance, we took a short drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway to Rock Point Overlook and 20 Minute Cliff. The view from these overlooks was an unexpected splendour.

저 밑 계곡에 살면서 일하든 사람들에게 이 절벽은 시계와 같은 역활을 하였습니다. 저녁 해가 이 절벽 바위에 비추면 계곡이 어두워질 때까지 20분이 남았다는 것을 알려 주었으니깐요.
The cliff served as a timepiece during the summer for the people who lived and worked in the valley below. The dusk arrives in the valley in 20 minutes after the sunlight hit the rock face of the cliff.

갈길은 멀고 느린 속도 제한으로 빨리 달리고 싶은 유혹이 생길 수 있겠지만 조심하세요. 속도 위반 딱지로 휴가를 망치지 마시고.
Since the destination is far and the speed limit is low, you may have temptation to drive fast. But, be careful. You don't want to ruin your vacation with the speeding ticket.

불루 릿지 파크웨이를 나온 후 들린 곳은 모나칸 인디언들이 "신의 다리"라고도 부르는 자연다리 입니다. 저희들이 들린 날은 무더위로 전기가 나가 다른 전시관들은 문을 닫아 할인 입장료 (보통 19불인데 할인 16불) 를 지불했습니다. 그렇지만 더운 날에 들린 장점은 이 장소가 거의전부 저희들 목이었으니깐요.

표매소에서 산책길까지 쇼틀 버스가 있지만 저희들은 산책길로 가는 137 계단을 걸었습니다. 자연다리는 자연이 만들은 20층 높이의 단단한 석회암인데 저절로 경탄이 나올만 합니다. 이 자연다리는 66 미터 높이에 폭은 27 미터 입니다. 자연의 삼나무 개천(Cedar Creek Nature) 산책길은 경치가 좋고 걷기에 쉬운 산책로입니다. 산책로를 따라 모형 인디언 마을도 있고 끝에는 레이스 폭포도 있지만 별로 인상적이 아니나 한가히 걷는 산책로 그 자체가 값어치가 있습니다.

After leaving the Blue Ridge Parkway, we stopped at Natural Bridge, also called "Bridge of God" which is named by the Monacan Indians. We paid a discount entrance fee ($16, normally $19 bridge only) because they lost electricity due to hot weather and most of their exhibitions are closed. One advantage of visiting on the hot day was that the place was almost to ourselves.

We walked down 137 steps to the trail entrance, but there is a shuttle ban between the ticket office and the trail entrance. Natural bridge is a 20 stories of solid limestone rock shaped by Mother Nature. It is 215 ft high with a span of 90 ft. Natural bridge was awesome and Cedar Creek Nature trail is scenic and easy course. The trail passes by a replica Indian Village and ends at Lace Falls, but they are not impressive. However, a leisurely walk along the trail is worth itself.

자연다리 벽에 세워진 돌로 만든 불상이라고하네요. 자연적으로 만들어진 것 같지는 않고요.
The statue of Buddha is on  the wall of the bridge. I doubt it is naturally made.

하얀 사각형 안에 있는 표적은 조지 워싱톤 대통령이 젊은 시절 이곳에 방문했을 때 새겨 놓은 사인이라고 하내요. 글쎄요, 저 높은 곳에 올라가 낙서를 남겼다는 것을 믿을지 말지. 동서를 막론하고 이름 새기는 버릇은 같은 가 보지요.
The sign inside of white square is supposed to be carved out by a young George Washington while he was visiting the area. Not sure that he climbed that high to leave the graffiti. The habit of carving names looks the same in the West or East culture.

Native American Village/인디언 마을 모양

이곳은 자연다리를 빼고는 꼭 만들어논 관광지 같은 기분을 줍니다(개인 소유이거든요)  . 그러나 다리 자체는 경탄할만큼 볼만 하고요 주변을 깨끗하게 유지하더군요.
This whole place feels like a manufactured tourist spot (privately owned) except the Natural Bridge. But, the bridge itself is awesome to look at and the area is well maintained.

아침은 친구 집에서 잘 먹고 떠났기에 점심은 린든(Linden)에 있는 애플 가게에 들려 샌드위치를 준비해 가지고 가다 스카이라인 드라이브에서 피크닉을 하기로 하였습니다. 이 집은 처음부터 사과 버터 시네몬 도넛을 잊지 못해 들릴 예정이었거든요.

원래 돼지고기와 치즈 샌드위치 ($6.99)는 따뜻하게 먹는 샌드위치라 주문해 가는 것을 망설였지만 한번 시도해 보기로하고 주문했는데 점심에 차게 먹어도 맛있게 먹었습니다. 미스터 그린은 닭 살라드인데 ($5.99) 더위에 걱정했지만 신선하고 맛 있었습니다. 사과 버터 시네몬 도넛 (65전)은 전에 먹어 보았던 맛 그대로 였습니다. 이 지역을 지나시면 꼭 들리세요.

Since we had a good breakfast at the friend's house, we decided to order the take out at the Apple House and have a picnic while traveling the Skyline Drive. But, we had a plan to stop at this place for their famous Apple Butter Cinnamon donut.

We have ordered  Hokies Steak & Cheese ($6.99) sandwich and Mr Green's (Chicken salad) ($5.99). We had a reservation ordering the sandwich since it is served hot, but it was still very good even as a cold sandwich. The salad was fresh and tasty. Apple Butter Cinnamon donut ($ 0.65) was still good as we remembered. It is a must stop if you are in the area.

치큰 오스카 (Chicken Oscar, $16.95) 고기는 연하고 적절하게 구워졌습니다. 폭 찹 (Pork Chop, $17.95)은 고기가 두꺼웠지만 적당히 구워졌습니다. 고기 겉은 맛있었는데 고기 속은 양념이 배지 않아 약간 민믿했습니다. 살라드는 별 다른 것이 없었고 상추는 좀 오래 되어 보였습니다. 들려 볼만한 다른 곳이 없다면 다시 한번 들릴 것 같네요.

Chicken Oscar ($16.95) was soft and moist. Coffee Pork Chop ($17.95) was thick and moist. The outside was very tasty, but inside meat was a little tasteless without any seasoning. Salad was nothing special and lettuce looked old. We may sop by again unless we find another place to try.

데일빌에 있는 수퍼 8 모텔은 깨끗했고 침대도 편했습니다. 에어 콘디션도 작동을 잘 했고 조용했습니다. 아침도 간단히 먹기에는 괜찮았고요.

Room at Super 8 motel at Daleville, VA was clean and the bed was comfortable. AC worked good and was quite. The food for breakfast was nothing fancy, but decent.

Luray Cavern (루레이 동굴):
169 Km 거리의 스타이라인 드라브를 전부 운전하는 대신 하이웨이 211에서 빠져 루레이 동굴을 들리고 81번 고속도로로 빠지는 것도 방법일 것 입니다.
The alternative to traveling 105 miles of the Skyline Drive is to visit the Luray Caverns taking a detour on Us-211 and then continue to travel on Highway 81.

Thomas Jefferson Monticello (토마스 제퍼슨 생가):
저희는 조지 워싱톤 생가를 들린 경험이 있어 토마스 제퍼슨 생가는 들리지 않기로 했지만 혹 지나가는 길이라면 염두에 두시기를. 또한 두 곳 다 방문하고 오신 분들이 조지 워싱톤 생가가 토마스 제퍼슨 생가보다 더 좋다고 하기도 하구요.
We decided to skip Thomas Jefferson Monticello since we have visited George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate. Also, people who visited both places recommend George Washington Estate if you have to pick one. But, you may include this place in your itinerary if it is on your way.

도착하던 날 늦은 시간이었지만 설렁탕과 해물 파전을 주문했는데 설렁탕은 늦은 저녁으로 먹을 만 했지만 해물파전은 아니 올씨다 였습니다.
Because of late arrival, we ordered Seol-lung-tang (Ox bone based soup) Seafood green onion pancake. Seol-lung-tang was good enough for the late night meal, but don't bother with Seafood green onion pancake

소문이 좋아 들렸는데 한 30분 기다려야 했습니다. 모르고 그냥 삼겹살 ($27.98/2인분)을 시켰는데 매운 삼겹살이 더 맛있다고 하네요. La 갈비 ($18.99)는 그저 그랬지만 홍초 불닭고기 ($14.99)는 괜찮았습니다. 도라무 통에 안자 구워 먹는 고기가 인상적 이었고 파킹은 문제가 없습니다. 고기 생각 날 때 가끔 가볼만한 곳 입니다.
We decided to this place since they had good reviews, but we had to wait about 30 minutes for the table. We ordered Pork Bellies ($27.98/2인분), but spicy Pork Bellies suppose to be much better.  LA Galbi ($18.99) was nothing special, but  Hong Cho Buldak ($14.99) was tasty. You may be able to get the similar quality food at other places, but you may go back for the food and atmosphere. The parking is not the problem since it is in the strip mall.

몆개월에 걸쳐 이간 (Eagan), 매플그로브 (Maple Grove), 세인트 폴 (St Paul)에 있는 교토 스시 (Kyoto Sushi) 를 들린 후 올립니다.

세 곳에 있는 지점들을 다니면서 될수록 여러 가지를 먹어 보았지만 대체적으로 하나씩 주문하는 스시는 생선은 너무 얇았고 밥은 너무 많았습니다. 밥으로 배를 채워 다른 것을 먹을 수가 없지 않을까합니다. 먹어 본 스시롤 중에서 크레이즈 롤, 섹시 걸, 카터필라 그리고 레인보우가 그나마 괜찮았지만 더 주문하지는 않았습니다. 질이 좀 별루더군요. 새우 뎀푸라는 먹을만 했는데 가지와 감자 뎀푸라는 간이 없는 것이 무슨 맛인지. 조개 튀김은 별로 였는데 돼지고기와 테리야기 닭고기는 괜칞았습니다. 사시미는 빨간 투나를 빼고는 그나마 싱싱했는데 나중에 더 주문한 것은 얼은 것이 녹지 않아 어름이 십힐 정도 였습니다. 

세곳의 식당 경험이 조금씩 달랐지만 이간 식당이 그 중 제일 괜찮은 식사 경험을 했습니다. 맜 있는 일식을 먹기위해 교토 스시를 들리지 않겠지만 여러가지를 먹어보기를 원한다면 들려도 되지 않을까합니다. 부페 값은 25불 이었습니다. 

This is a review of Kyoto Sushi after visiting the places located in Eagan, Maple Grove and St. Paul over few months. 

We have tried to taste most on the menu at three places. The fish on sushi was too thin and it was made with too much rice. If you have too many sushi, you may not be able to try any other food. Among the sushi roll, Crazy roll, Sexy Girl roll, Caterpillar roll, and Rainbow roll was somewhat reasonable, but we did not try any other. the quality needs some improvement. The shrimp tempura was good, but egg plant and potato tempura had no taste. Deep fried scallop was nothing to brag about, but Teriyaki Chicken and Pork Cutlet were good. The first two orders of Sashimi was OK except Red Tuna, but we could taste the ice on the later orders.

Among the three places, we had better eating experience at the Eagan place. This is not the place to experience real quality Japanese food, but it could be good place to try different Japanese food. It was $25 for AYCE.

Traveling Through Wyoming (와이오밍 주 여행)

오늘은 몬태나에 있는 리틀 빅혼 전쟁터 기념비 (Little Bighorn Battlefield Monument, Montana)와 와이오밍에 있는 데빌즈 타워 (Devil's Tower, Wyoming)를 거쳐 블렉 힐즈로 갈 예정입니다.

Today, we will be traveling to Black Hills, South Dakota with stops at Little Bighorn Battlefield Monument, Montana and Devil's Tower, Wyoming

Little Bighorn Battlefield Monument, MT (몬태나 리틀 빅혼 전쟁터 기념비)

이곳은 커스터의 마지막 전투 장소로도 알려져 있는 곳이기도 합니다. 수와 샤이안 인디언들이 그들 대로의 생활을 유지하기 위해 제 7 기병대와 마지막 무장 전투를 한 곳입니다. 1881년에 제 7 기병대 전사자들 합장 묘지에 기념비를 세웠고 전해졌던 이야기는 미 육군의 관점에서 본 한쪽만의 역사였습니다. 이 전투에 관한 인디언 쪽의 이야기는 그저 구두로 전해져 왔슬 뿐입니다. 그러다 1991년에 미 국회가 전쟁터의 이름을 바꾸고 인디언 기면비를 세울 것을 명하고 2003년에 완성하였습니다.

"40 년 전 우리는 모두가 전사할때 까지 커스터와 싸웠다. 그때 우리는 백인들에게 적이었지만 지금은 한 국기 아래 평화롭게 사는 형제요 친구입니다."  투 문즈, 북 샤이언

이곳에 들린다면 백인들의 이야기만이 아니라 좀 더 넓게 이 전투에 관한 것들을 알 수 있게되며 평화로움과 슬픔을 동시에 경험할 수 있을 것 입니다.

This place is also known as "Custer's Last Stand". The area memorializes the US Army's 7th Calvary and Sioux and Cheyenne in one of the Indians last armed efforts to preserve their way of life. In 1881, a memorial was erected over the mass grave of the Seventh Calvary soldiers. The early interpretations were largely mono-cultural, honoring only the US army's perspective. But the story of the battle from Native American perspective was largely told through the oral tradition. In 1991, the US Congress changed the name of battle field and ordered the construction of an Indian Memorial which was dedicated in 2003.

The visit may provide much broader view of the entire conflicts, not focused on the "white man's side" and you may experience both the sadness and peacefulness by being at this historic battlefield,

Memorial for Calvary/기병대 기념비

앞에 보이는 능선이 숨어 있던 인디언들이 기병대를 향해 총을 쏜 곳이라고 합니다. 지금은 싸움의 흔적은 없고 너무 평온하네요.
The Indians hiding behind the hill in the center fired their rifles at the soldiers. The place is now too peaceful without any trace of the battle.

안내소 벽에 쓰여 있는 "평화의 힘을 알라"라는 글이 무척 인상적이었습니다.
"Know The Power That Is Peace" written on the wall of visitor center was quite memorable.

Devil's Tower National Monument, WY (와이오밍 주 데빌즈 타워 국립 기념물)

이 기념물의 지질학적 역사와 이 지역 원주민들에게 어떤 뜻을 가지고 있나를 배우는 것도 흥미 있지만 보는 눈에 따라서는 그저 거대한 용암으로만 보일 수도 있습니다. 이곳이 라코타 인디언들에게 신성한 곳인지 알면서 국립공원 관리청에서 왜 암반 등산를 허락하는지 이해가 안가는 군요. 어글리 어메이칸이어서 인지요? 그러나 블렉 힐즈 근처에 있으면 들려 볼만 한 곳입니다.

It is interesting to learn its history and what it means to the local tribes, but it could be just a big molten rock depending on your view. While the site is considered Sacred to Lakota and other tribes, we could not understand why the Park Service still allows the climbing the monument. Are we "ugly" Americans? But, it would be a good side trip from Black Hills.

하이웨이 14번을 따라 데빌즈 타워를 가다 보면 차를 세우고 사진을 찍을 수 있는 곳들이 있으니 놓지지 마십시오. 파킹장에서부터 타우워 밑까지 가는 산책길과 타우워 밑 주변을 도는 산책길을 걸어 보십시오.

As you drive toward the Devil's Tower on highway 14, there are pull outs which provide the great photo opportunity. Once you get into the monument, there are two trail you may try: one leads to the base of the monument and the other goes around the base of tower.

몬태나 주 빌링에서 친구들과 헤어지고 몬태나 주에 있는 리틀 빅혼 전쟁 기념비와  와이오밍 주 데빌스 타워 국립 기념물을 들려 사우스 다코타 커스터까지 오니 오늘 운전 거리가 약 660 Km 이었네요.

After saying good-bye to the friends at Billings, MT, the distance we drove to Custer, South Dakota today is about 410 miles with stops at Little Bighorn Battlefield Monument, MT and Devil's Tower National Monument, WY.

서로 정 반대 쪽에 사는 친구들이 중간 지점인 미네아폴리스 다운터운에서 저녁을 하기로하고 식당을 찾든 중 헬즈 키친 (Hell's Kitchen)에서 만났습니다. 고객들이 주로 젊은 층이지만 음식이 괜찮다고해서요. 또한 이 지역에서 생산되는 재료를 사용하여 음식을 만든다고 합니다.

저녁으로 월라이 생선 비엘티 (Walleye BLT, $14.95), 햄과 배 샌드위치 ( Ham and Pear Sandwich, $11.75), 바이슨 버거 (Bison Burger with Cheese, $13.90 ),  그리고 바베큐 돼지 갈비 (BBQ Baby Back Ribs, $14.95 half)를 주문 했습니다. 월라이 샌드위치는 얇게 튀겨졌고 맛있었는데 같이 나온 감자 튀김은 별로 였습니다. 바이슨 버거는 약간 비싸다는 감이 있지만 맛은 괜찮았고, 바베큐 돼지 갈비는 좋았습니다. 미국에서 맛있는 50가지 샌드위치 안에 들었다는 햄과 배 샌드위치는 다른 소스와도 겸해 먹어 보았지만 추천할만 하지는 않네요.

이 식당의 아침 식사가 더 잘 알려져 있다고하니 언제고 아침을 먹으러 한번 더 들려야 할 듯합니다. 아침 메뉴에 있는 몆 접시는 언제나 주문이 되지만요. 워낙 소문이 나서인지 몰라도 케라맬 피칸 롤(Caramel Pecan Roll, $5.75)은 크고  맛도 괜찮은 편이지만 기대만큼은 못했습니다.

실내 장식은 식당 이름을 따라서인지 주로 빨간색 (지옥을 뜻하는 것인지)에 어둡고 색다르긴 합니다. 그렇다고 무섭게 해 놓은 것은 아니지만 상들리에 장식이 나이프, 숫가락, 포크 둥이라 키가 크신 분들은 조심 조심. 담당 웨이터는 우리가 들린 날 병으로 결석한 직원들 때문에 12 시간을 일하고 있다고 했는데도 친절했으나 물 컵을 채워주는 것이 좀 느렸습니다. 

앞 쪽에 있는 방은 라이브 벤드 공연이 있어 음악을 즐기기에는 좋지만 조용히 대담을 나누고 싶으면 뒷 쪽에 있는 방에 자리를 달라고 하십시오. 저녁 예약을 하여 기다리는 시간은 없어지만 주말 아침 시간은 30분 이상 가라릴 수 있다고 하네요. 파킹은 식당과 붙어 있는 유료 실내 주차장이 있습니다. 

While looking for a restaurant to meet the friends who live in the opposite end of town, we decided to try Hell's Kitchen in Minneapolis downtown. We were told that most of patrons are young, but the food was good. Also they are known to use locally grown and/or organic ingredients.

We ordered Walleye BLT ($14.95), Ham and Pear Sandwich ($11.75), Bison Burger with Cheese ($13.90 ),  and BBQ Baby Back Ribs ($14.95 half). Walleye was lightly fried and the sandwich tasted real good, but the sweet potato fries need improvement. The Bison burger seems a little expensive side, but it was good while the BBQ Rib was real good. Ham and pear sandwich (which suppose to be selected as one of 50 best sandwiches in America according to the menu) was not for our taste even if we tried with other sources.

Since this place is known for their breakfast menu, we may come back for the breakfast (some dishes are available all day). We ordered Caramel Pecan Roll ($5.75) to go. The roll is large and it tastes good, but it was less than what we expected. Maybe, our expectation was too high...

Following the name of restaurant, the interior is unusual with mostly red and darker colors (expressing the hell?). But it was not scary except that tall people should be careful since the chandeliers are decorated with knives, spoons and forks. Because of few employees called in sick, our server was working 12 hour shift, but he was enthusiastic even though he was a little slow filling out=r water cups in the end.

If you want a quite place to chat with friends, ask a table in the back room since the room in the front has a live band and it will be hard to shout over the music. We did not wait since we had a dinner reservation, but we heard it could be more than 30 minutes wait especially for the weekend breakfast. There is a parking garage next to the restaurant.

오늘 샌프란시스코 여행 일정은 골든 게이트 공원(Golden Gate Park)에서 과학박물관(California Academy of Sciences) 과 일본 티 가든 (Japanese Tea Garden)을 돌아 볼 예정입니다.
Our plan for today is to visit the California Academy of Sciences and the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park.

California Academy of Sciences (켈리포니아 과학 박물관):

이 박물관은 다른 과학 박물관처럼 만지면서 직접 해보는 박물관이아니고 보고 또는 설명을 읽으면서 경험하는 그런 박물관입니다. 박물관은 크게 세 곳의 전시관으로 나누어져 있습니다. 여러 종류의 식물들과 동물들이 전시되어 있고, 나비들이 날라다니는 28 미터 높이의 열대 우림장, 여어 가지의 바다 속 생물들이 사는 수족관, 많은 박제된 동물들과 살아있는 펭귄들이 전시되어 있는 자연사 박물관으로 나누어져 있습니다.

This is more of the look-and-read experience than a touch-and-play unlike other science museums. The museum has three major sections: the Rainforest exhibit enclosed in 90 feet glass dome with plants, animals and butterflies flapping around, the Aquarium with different types of sea life (which is most popular), and Natural History Museum with full of taxidermied animals and live penguins.

박물관 전체와 각 전시관의 관람객 수를 통제하고 있었지만 전시물들 사진을 찍기위해서는 가다려야 할 정도로 관람객이 많았습니다. 지진 전시관은 가다리는 줄이 너무 길어 그냥 지나치기로 하고요 (지진 전시관을 보고 나오는 관람객들 평을 들으면 오래 기다릴만한 곳은 못되는 것 같구요) 어린 자녀들과 함께 가신다면 29불 95전 입장료가 비싸다는 감은 안들 것입니다. 저희들은 차를 안가지고 갔지만 주차장 주차료가 싸지 않다는 평들이더군요.

Even though the total number of visitors in the building and exhibit is controlled, it was very crowded such that we had to wait to take the picture of the displays. We also skipped the earthquake exhibit since the line was too long (We weren't sure if it is worth waiting with the comments by some of the visitors) $29.95/admission is well worth it, especially if you have young children. We did not take our car, but we heard the parking at the garage is not cheap.

Japanese Tea Garden (일본 티 가든) :

이 정원은 1894년 켈리포니아 겨울 국제 전시회 때 지었고 일반인에게 공개되어 있는 가장 오래된 일본 정원입니다. 정원은 생각했던 것보다 컸고 정말 아름다웠습니다. 방문객들로 무척 복잡했지만 그런대로 여유 있게 돌아 볼 수 있었습니다. 7불 (센프랕시스코 시민은 5불)의 입장료가 아깝지 않았고요 동양 정원을 경험한 적이 없으면 사진기를 잊지 마세요. 골든 게이트 공원을 방문하시면 일본 정원을 한 번 들리세요. 그러나 이곳이 식물원가 다르다는 것을 기억하십시오.

This Japanese Tea Garden is the oldest public Japanese Garden in the Untied States which was originally built for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition. The garden is bigger than we expected and is a beautiful place. It was crowded with the tourists on the day we visited, but we were able to have the leisurely time. It was worth the $7 admission ($5 for SF resident) and bring the camera if you never experienced the beautiful oriental garden. We recommend visiting the place at least once if you are in Golden Gate Park. And, remember, it is not a botanical garden.

보통 관광지 안의 음식점과 기념품점들은 비싼 편이라 들리지는 않았습니다. 또한 정원 입장료도 포함하지않고 25불이나하는 다도식은 너무 비싼 편이라 들리지 않았습니다. 아주 전통식도 아닌 다도식에.

Since the cafe and gift shop in the tourist attraction is usually expensive, we did not try them. We also did not try the tea ceremony, since $25 fee not including the admission may be a little too steep for not so authentic ceremony.

Golden Gate Park (골든 게이트 공원):

골든 게이트 공원은 아름다운 곳도 많지만 한가지 조심할 것은 해가 진후에는 아는 길이나 사람들이 많이 다니는 길로 다니십시오. 길을 잃어 찾든 중 동네 사는 분들께 길을 물었더니 노숙객들이 많이 모이는 곳을 피해 가라는 조언들을 하더군요.

Golden Gate Park is a beautiful place to visit, but you need to be aware that you use the street you are familiar with or the street with a lot of traffic. When we asked the people who live in the neighborhood while looking for the place, they told us to avoid the ares with the homeless people.

One afternoon in Golden Gate Park was too short of time to see and enjoy everything it has to offer. We could have spent all day and not gotten bored.

Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (샌프란시스코 아시안 미술관)과 Fisherman's Wharf (피셔맨즈 워프)

유엔 플라자와 샌프란시스코 시청 근처에 있는 샌프란시스코 아시안 미술관 (Asian Art Museum of San Francisco)은 동양계 소장품이 제일 많은 곳으로 알려져 있습니다. 하나 하나를 관람하는데 많은 시간을 보낼 수 있는 곳이지만 전체적으로는 전시품들이 연결이 되지 않는 느낌이 들었습니다. 그러나 입장료 ($12/어른)가 아까웠다는 생각은 않드네요. 미술관을 제일 잘 구경할 수 있는 방법은 먼저 안내원과 함께하는 한시간 짜리 무료 안내 관람을 한 후 더 보고 싶은 갤러리를 다시 돌아 보는 것입니다. 또한 미술관이 5시에 문을 닫으니 일찍 가십시오.

Asian Art Museum of San Francisco located near UN Plaza and city hall has one of the largest collection of ancient oriental artifacts. You could spend a lot of time enjoying each exhibit, but the overall display gives the feeling of disconnect. We enjoyed the museum and we thought $12 admission fee was well worth it. The best way to see the museum is to take the free one hour guided tour and then go back to those galleries that interested you most on your own. We recommend to go to the museum early since it closes at 5 PM.

Fisherman's Wharf (피셔맨즈 워프)

15년만에 다시 들리는 피셔맨즈 워프이지만 달라진 것은 한가롭게 걷기에는 너무 많은 방문객 수와 이곳이 더 상업적이 되었다는 것입니다. 샌프란시스코 만 경치, 알카트레츠와 바다 사자를 구경하는 것 이외에는 상점들과 식당들로 꽉찬 전형적인 관광지 입니다. 이번 성과는 저희들이 들릴 예정지들 목록에서 지워졌다는 것이네요.

It has been 15 years since we last visited Fisherman's Wharf and it is too crowded to have a leisurely walk and more commercialized. Beside the sea lions and view of bay and Alcatraz, this is a typical tourist spot with overpriced shops and restaurants. We were here to cross it out from the list we visited.

It is understandable, but the people's heart are not there. Some places change $1 to use the restroom if you are not the customer.

Things to Must Remember (꼭 기억 하실 것들):

* You must purchase the ticket ($17.60 C/day) to enter Banff/Jasper National Park unless you plan to drive through the park without stopping anywhere including city of Banff. (벤프 시가를 비롯하여 국립공원 안에 어느 곳이라도 주차할 예정이면 꼭 공원 입장권을 구입하십시오.)
* The weather at Banff and Jasper could change at anytime because of its high elevation at 1000 m (3300 ft) and higher. (벤프와 제스퍼 지역은 고도 때문에 기후가 어느 때고 변할 수 있으니 항상 준비하십시오. )

Helpful Comments (도움말):
* We recommend some alternatives or slacks in your itinerary. You will spend more time than you plan at some places because of scenery or get delayed because of traffic. On the other hand, it is unlikely, but you may spend less time than you plan because the view is less than expected. (방문할 곳들에 대안이나 여분의 시간을 준비하는 것이 도움이 되더군요. 경치가 너무 좋아 한 곳에서 생각했던 것보다 더 오래 있을 수도 있고, 차로 이동하다보니 늦어지기도하구요. 반대로 그런 일은 적지만 생각했던 것보다 별루다하여 빨리 떠날 수도 있고요.)

* It is helpful to plan if you decide before the trip whether you want to see number of places or concentrate on certain areas in a given time. We only tried few trails since we wanted to visit many places we could. (여행을 떠나기 전에 주어진 시간에 먼저 몇 군데를 자세히 볼 것인지 아니면 광범위하게 볼 것인지를 결정하시면 여행 계획을 세우는데 도움이 될 것입니다. 저희들은 여러 군데를 보기를 원해서 등산로는 몇군데만 가 보았습니다.)

* The group tours are probably OK, but they seem like the manufacturing line of sightseeing; stop, take picture and go. Also, you may miss the hidden treasures while visiting only well-known places. If it is possible, we recommend to rent a car and take time and enjoy the scene. (여러 단체 관광객들을 보았는데 꼭 공장에서 물건 만드는 식 구경이더군요. 하차, 사진 찍기, 그리고 출발. 또한 단체 여행은
잘 알려진 곳만 들리니 숨은 보석을 못 보는 경우가 많은 것 같드군요. 가능하시면 임대차로 천천히 구경하면서 경치를 즐기세요.)

* The summer is the peak time to visit both Banff and Glacier national park, but the winter might be good alternative if you like the winter sports. Another benefit for winter travel is that the hotel is almost half price compared to the summer. However, some of the roads in Banff and Glacier park are closed during the winter and you have to miss some of picturesque places. (여름이 벤프와 글레시어 공원을 방문할 성수기이지만 겨울 운동을 좋아하면 겨울에 들리는 것도 재미 있을 것입니다. 겨울 여행의 장점은 여름에 비해 호텔 방 값이 반 정도 입니다. 그러나 겨울에는 몇 도로들이 통행이 금지 되기 때문에 그림 같은 경치를 못 보게 됩니다.)

* There are two ways to travel: one is to spend as much time as you can at a destination, the other is to make multiple destination and spend as much as time you can at a destination. It will depend on the individual preference, but we liked the multiple destination trip since we were able to see more places and it was less boring of car trip. (한군데 목적지를 정해 놓고 그 곳에서 많은 시간을 보내든가 아니면 정해진 시간에 야러 군데를 들리는 여행 길이 있겠습니다. 각자의 취향에 딸렸지만 저희는 여러 군데를 들리는 것이 더 많은 곳을 보며 재미 있었고, 하루에 한 것을 드리는 여정이 차로 운전하면서 지루한 것을 몰랐습니다.)

Drumheller near Calgary (켈거리 근처 드럼핼러): 
Royal Tyrrell Museum at Drumheller is the world's largest exhibit of complete dinosaur skeletons collected from the badlands. It is recommended especially if you are travelling with kids. (켈거리 근처 드림헬러에 있는 로얄 티렐 박물관은 이 지역 불모지에서 도굴된 뼈로 완성된 공룡들이 제일 많은 박물관으로 유명합니다. 어린 아이들과 여행하시면 추천하는 곳입니다.)

여름 휴가기에 여행을 할 예정이면 관광지는 몇 달 전에 예약을 하고 가십시오. 그래야 선택의 여지가 있습니다. 방은 시간이 걸려도 여러 웹 사이트롤 보고 방이 깨끗하고 침대가 괜찮았다는 평이 있는 곳으로 정했습니다. 저희들이 묵었던 몆 군데는 겉은 낡은 호텔/모텔 이었지만 하루밤 자기에는 문제가 없었습니다. 그래도 도착할 때까지는 모르는 것이니 운명(?)이나 행운에 맡겨야지요.
If you want some choices in choosing the hotel, make sure that you reserve a room long before you start the summer travel. Even if it takes some time to check several web sites, we reserved a room where the reviews indicate the clean room and comfortable bed. Some of the hotels/motels were old buildings, but we did not have any problem with the rooms. But, sometimes you have to leave it up to the fate(?) or luck.

Renting a Camper (켐퍼 렌탈):
There were a lot of campers in Banff and Jasper area. They looks like the rentals since all of them had the same external design. We haven't tried, but this could be an alternative way of traveling in Canada. (벤프와 제스퍼 부근에서 많은 켐프차들을 보았습니다. 차 겉 모양이 다 똑 같은 것이 임대차들 같읍니다. 저희들도 경험이 없지만 케나다 여행을 임대차로 하는 것도 고려 해볼 만한 것 같읍니다.)

Montana(몬태나):
몬태나에서 들은 소문은 주 경찰들이 경제가 나쁠 때 주정부 수익을 올리기 위해 자동차 속도위반 딱지를 많이 발행한다는 것입니다. 고속 도로에 차량이 적다고 맘 놓지 마세요. 고속도로가 한산하다고 경찰차가 없는 것은 아니니깐요.
We heard a rumor in Montana that the state police is writing a lot of traffic tickets to help with the state revenue. You may not see a lot of cars on the highway, but that does not mean no patrol.
