Montana - Glacier National Park (2) (몬태나 주 - 글레시어 국립공원 (2))

오늘의 일정은 이스트 글레시아 (East Glacier)에서 아침을 먹은 후 투 메디신 호수 (Two Medicine Lake)를 둘러보고 글레시어 국립 공원을 떠 날 예정입니다. 그 후 몬태나의 브라운닝, 그레이트 훨(Browning, Great Falls Montana) 을 지나 빌링즈 (Billings Montana) 에서 머물 예정입니다.

Our itinerary for today is to visit Two Medicine Lake after having the breakfast at East Glacier. After leaving the Glacier National Park, we will pass through cities of Browning and Great Falls before arriving at Billings, Montana for the night.

이스트 그레시어(East Glacier)에 있는 투 메디신 그릴(Two Medicine Grill) 식당은 아침 식사 손님들로 무척 붐볐습니다. 자리가 나기를 꽤 오래 기다렸지만 그래도 재미 있는 실내 장식 덕분에 기다리는 시간이 지루하지는 않았습니다. 손님들이 많은데도 종업원들은 유쾌하게 대해 주었지만 아침 식사는 인터넷에 올라 있는 평들 만큼 훌륭한 것은 아니었습니다.

Two Medicine Grill at East Glacier was a very busy place when we stopped for the Breakfast. We had to wait for some time for the table, but the wait was not boring since the decor was interesting to kill the time. Even though the restaurant was very busy, the servers were cheerful, but the breakfast food was not as good as some reviewers mentioned.

아침으로 부른 배를 가지고 글레시어 팍 호텔(Glacier Park Lodge) 잘 정리된 정원을 걷다 교묘하게 쌓은 돌탑을 보았습니다. 이 호텔은 옛날 철도회사가 1913년에 건축한 호화 호텔 중의 하나였으며 로비는 그 당시의 사치함을 그대로 보여 주네요.

While strolling the well-kept garden at East Glacier Lodge with the full stomach after the breakfast, we cam upon the tower build upside down with rocks. This hotel was one of the luxurious hotels build by the railroad company in 1913 and the lobby displays the richness of the time.

이스트 글레시어 팍 (East Glacier Park)에서 고속도로 49번을 따라 복쪽으로 가면 "속임수의 폭포(Trick Falls)"라고도 불리우는 런닝 이글 폭포(Running Eagle Falls)가 투 메디신 길(Two Medicine Road) 북쪽 호수가에 있습니다. 이 폭포는 두 폭포가 하나인 폭포입니다. 물이 많은 계절에는 폭포물이 위에서 떨어지면서 중간에 있는 동굴에서 나오는 푹포를 감추어 줍니다. 이 지역은 글레시어 공원의 다른 곳들보다 방문객이 적어 평온한 시간을 즐길 수 있었습니다.

Driving north on highway 49 from East Glacier Park, the Running Eagle Falls (also called Trick Falls) is located on the northern shore line of Two Medicine Road. This fall is really two falls in one. During the high water, the water leaps from the top hiding a second falls that flows out of a cave half way down. The area was less crowded compared to other places in Glacier and we were able to enjoy some tranquil time.

"태양으로 가는 (Going-to-the-Sun )" 길이 열리기 전에는 투 메디신 지역이 기차로 도착하는 여행자들의 주 목적지 였습니다. 오늘날은 이 지역은 많은 공원 방문자들에게 그저 인적이 드문 곳으로 여겨집니다. 그러나 이곳을 방문하신다면 평온의 아름다움을 만끽할 수 있을 것입니다.

Before the Going-to-the-Sun Road was constructed, Two Medicine was a primary destination for travelers arriving by train. Today, Two Medicine has become a somewhat off-the-beaten-path discovery for most park visitors. But, you will enjoy the serene beauty of the area.

전체적으로 케나다 벤프를 보고와서인지 글레시어 국립공원은 벤프에 비해 축소판을 보는 것 같았습니다. 그러나 벤프에서 경험한 웅장한 맛은 없었지만 아기자기한 맛이 있습니다.

The Glacier National Park seems a miniature compared to Canada Banff National Park. It did not have the grand view of Banff, but you may enjoy the charming beauty of Glacier National Park.

글레시어 국립공원을 떠난 후 처음 방문지는 브라운닝(Browning)에서 연방 하이웨이 2번과 몬태나 주 하이웨이 89번 교차점에 있는 평원 인디언 박물관(Museum of the Plains Indian) 이었습니다. 건물이 박물관 같지 않게 초라하여 놓치기가 쉽습니다. 입장료는 4불이었구요. 박물관 안에서는 사진을 찍지 못하게하여 보여 드릴 것이 없지만 꽤 흥미있고 교육적이었습니다. 한가지 흥미로웠던 것은 화장실 이름이 어메리칸 인디안 용어 로 쓰여져 있던 것입니다. Ninnaks는 남자용, Akiiks는 여자용 입니다. 읽을 수는 없어도 분별은 할 수 있으니 마음 놓으시고.

After leaving the Glacier National Park, our first visit was the Museum of the Plains Indian at the junction of US 2 and Monta 89 in Browning, Montana. The museum is to miss since the building does not look like a museum. The admission fee was $4/adult. Since camera is not allowed inside of museum, we do not have anything to show, but it was very interesting and educational. If you are looking for the restroom, you may find a surprise with signs. The signs are in the native language (Ninnaks = man, Akiiks = woman), but you can tell which is which.

점심은 그레읻 훨즈(Great Falls) 동쪽 끝에 있는 매플 가든(Maple Garden)이란 중국 식당에서 하였습니다. 종업원께서 한국인이라고 굉장히 친절하게 대해 주셨고요. 음식은 양도 많은 것이 맛도 몬태나 수준(?)으론 괜찮았습니다.

We stopped at Maple Garden in Great Falls for the lunch. It is a Chinese restaurant located in the east side of town. The food was plentiful and decent (in Montana standard, I guess), and the service was great.

몬태나 주 빌링(Montana Billing)에 들리시면 휀시 스시(Fancy Sushi)란 일본 음식점을 추천합니다. 저희가 들렸을 때는 식당을 시작한지 며칠 안됐지만 서비스도 좋았고 음식은 보기 뿐만이 아니라 정말 맛 있었습니다. 제대로 만든 스시를 몬태나에서 먹어 보리라곤 생각도 못했습니다.

If you are in Billing, Montana, we strongly recommend to visit the Japanese restaurant, Fancy Sushi. The restaurant was open only few days when we visited, but the service was great and the presentation of food was beautiful and it tasted excellent. We never imagined to eat the best sushi out in Montana.

몬태나에서 마지막 밤은 컨튜리 인 앤 스위트에서 보냈습니다. 호텔은 깨끗했고 침대는 매우 편했습니다. 주변의 호텔에 비해 호텔비는 약간 비싼 편이었지만 추천할 만 합니다.
We spent the last night in Montana at Country Inn & Suite. The hotel was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The price was in the high end among the hotels in the area, but we recommend it.

내일은 와이오밍 주에 있는 리틀 빅혼 전쟁터 국립기념비와 데빌즈 타워를 지나 사우스 다코타 주 불랙 힐 근처의 커스터라는 도시로 갈 예정입니다.
Our plan for tomorrow is to arrive at Custer, South Dakota after visiting the Long Horn National Park and Devil's Tower in Wyoming.

Great Falls:
Great Falls 국제공항 청사 2층에 세계에서 가장 많은 모형 비행기를 수집해 전시해 논 곳이 있습니다. 모든 모형 비행기는 현재 또는 이제 기억에만 있는 비행기 회사들의 비행기 같이 칠해져 있습니다.

빵집: Five Loaves Coffee House 는 평도 좋고 이익금으로 선교도 한다고하여 궁금증도 있고하여 들릴 예정이었으나 일요일에는 문을 안연다고하여 들리지 못했습니다.

There is a Largest Model Airplane Collection in the world in the upstairs terminal of the Great Falls International Airport. All planes are decorated to look like airlines of current and those just now in memory.

Five Loaves Coffee House and Bakery: We planned to visit because they had high recommendation for their bakery items and we were also curious of their work for the mission work with their profits. But, we could not taste their bread since they are not open on Sundays.

Minnesota 35W Bridge Collapse (미네소타 고속도로 다리 붕괴)

미국에서는 상상도 못하였던 고속도로 다리가 붕괴하는 사고가 미네소타 주에서 일어난지 5년이 되었습니다. 이 사고로 13명이 죽고 145명의 부상자가 생겼습니다. 다행이도 저희들이 아는 몇 가정은 단 몇 분 차이로 이 사고를 피할 수 있었습니다. 이 사고가 미국 전역의 다리들의 안전도를 점검하는 계기가 되었습니다.
It has been five years since the collapse of 35W bridge in Minnesota which was unthinkable to happen in US at the time. Thirteen people died and 145 were injured. Fortunately, few families we know avoided the accident only by few minutes. This accident was the reason for the nation to inspect all of the bridges in the country for the safety.

미네소타 주 정부는 새로 건설한 다리 옆에 사망자와 부상자를 기리는 기념비를 세웠습니다. 13개의 기둥에는 사망자의 이름이 새겨졌으며 생존자 이름은 뒤에 있는 물이 흐르는 돌벽에 새겨졌습니다.
The state built the memorial honoring the dead and injured near the new bridge. The names of people who died are etched on 13 pillars and the names of survived are inscribed on the stone water wall.

한 조각가가 사고 5주년을 기념하여 "생명의 고리"라 불리는 떠있는 기념비를 스톤 아치 다리 (Stone Arch Bridge) 옆 미시시피 강 위에 디자인 하였습니다. 사진 오른쪽 중간 물에 떠있는 35개의 하얀 큰 고리는 35W 라는 다리 이름을 상징합니다.
An artist designed a floating memorial called "Life Ring" near the Stone Arch Bridge on the Mississippi river. Thirty five giant rings floating in the water (middle right of the picture) symbolize the name of the 35W bridge.

Minnesota Southwest (미네소타 남서쪽 여행)

사우스 다코타 (South Dakota)에서 미네소타 (Minnesota)로 들어와 첫번째 방문지는 고속도로 90 번에서 미네소타 하이웨이 23 번을 따라 북쪽으로 37 Km 에 있는 파이프스톤 국립공원 (Pipestone National Park)입니다. 어메리칸 인디안들은 이곳에 있는 빨간 파이프스톤을 (red pipestone) 채석하여 기도시에 사용하는 파이프를 만들었습니다. 많은 인디언들이 파이프의 연기가 자기들이 드리는 기도를 (인니언들의)주신에게 전달한다고 믿었다고 합니다. 빨간 파이프스톤의 엮인 전설은 전젱을 일삶던 나라들의 죽은자들의 볽은 피로 물들어 돌들이 빨간 색이고 전쟁은 주신을 기쁘게 하지 않는다는 것을 기억케하는 것이랍니다.

Crossing into Minnesota from South Dakota, our first stop is the Pipestone National Park in Pipestone, Minnesota. It is located about 27 miles north on MN 23 from I-90. The American Indians have quarried the red pipestone found in this site. The pipestone quarried is carved into pipes used for prayer. Many believed that the pipe's smoke carries one's prayer to the Great Spirit. The legend of red pipestone is that it is stained by the blood of dead people of warring nations and it is a reminder to all that war does not please Great Spirit.

안내소에 있는 오솔길 지도는 파이프스톤 채석장, 오래된 돌상, 대초원, 그리고 인디언 수족 말로 "질투의 처녀" 폭포라고 번역되는 Winnewissa Falls 설명이 매우 자세하게 되어 있었습니다. 이 국립공원은 잘 알려져 있지도 않고 다른 국립공원에 비해 규모가 작아 기대가 적었습니다. 그러나 결과는 인디언 역사를 공감하며 오솔길을 즐기는 평온의 시간을 보낸 것이 기대 이상 이었습니다. 이 국립공원은 매일 오전 8시부터 오후 5시까지 열고 입장료는 3불입니다.

The trail map which is available at the visitor center is very informational and a good guide featuring the pipestone quarries, Old Stone Face, the native tallgrass prairie, Winnewissa Falls which translates to "jealous maiden" from the Sioux language. Since the park is relatively unknown and small compared to other national park we visited, we weren't sure what to expect on this visit. But, we had very tranquil time while appreciate the history and enjoying the trail. The park is open from 8 AM to 5 PM daily and there is $3 entrance fee.

미네소타 주 파이프스톤 마을에서 점심을 먹고 파이프스톤 국립공원을 뒤로 했습니다. 미네소타 하이웨이 75번을 따라 내려오다 불루 마운드 근처에서 재미 있는 교회를 하나 발견했습니다. 이 작은 교회는 문 입구가 어른 한사람 크기이지만 안에는 강대상과 의자가 몇개 있었습니다. 친절하게도 마실 물도 준비되어 있구요.

We left the Pipestone National Park after eating the lunch at Pipestone, Minnesota. While driving down the MN highway 75, we cam upon an interesting chapel. The chapel was so small that the entrance is as tall as an adult, but there was a pulpit and pews. They even prepared the water for the visitors.

하이웨이를 따라 운전하다 미네소타 (Minnesota) 불루 어스 (Blue Earth)에 있는 "쾌활한 녹색 거인" (Jolly Green Giant) 이라는 동상이 있는 곳에서 짧은 휴식을 위해 들렸습니다. 이 섬유유리 동상의 높이는 16.7 미터이고 하이웨이 90번에서 남쪽으로 0.8 Km 떨어진 곳에 있습니다. "쾌활한 녹색 거인" 은 미네소타 벨리 통조림 공장에서 생산하는 녹색 거인 상품의 마스코트 입니다.

At Blue Earth, Minnesota, we made a quick leg-stretching stop at the statue of "Jolly Green Giant". This fiber glass statue is 55 feet tall and is located at a half-mile south from I-90. The "Jolly Green Giant" is the mascot of Green Giant brand of Minnesota Valley Canning Company.

이번 12일 여행의 마지막 방문지인 미네소타 주 어스틴에 있는 스팸 공장입니다. 2차 대전 때 연합군들의 주요 식량으로 알려지기 시작하여 이제 세상 어느 곳에서도 유명해진 상품입니다. 불경기 일수록 스팸 판매가 증가한다고하네요. 입장료는 무료이고요 주차는 큰 주차장이 있어 문제가 없습니다.

The last place we planned to stop in this 12 day trip is the SPAM factory in Austin, Minnesota. SPAM became well known as a military K-ration during world War II. Now, it is famous food all over the world. It is interesting though that the sale of SPAM increases when the economy is bad. There is no entrance fee for the museum and there are plenty of space to park the car.

Driving Cross Country - Preparation (미국 대륙횡단 준비) - From Virginia to California (버지나아에서 켈리포니아까지)

미국 대륙횡단을 준비하면서... While preparing to cross the America by car...

미국 중부에 살면 대륙횡단할 수 있는 기회가 별로 없거나 염두가 않나는데 이번에 버지니아에서 켈리포니아로 가는 미국 대륙횡단의 기회가 생겨 먼저 어느 루트를 따라 갈 것인가를 조사했습니다. 대체적으로 네 길이 있네요. 약간 북쪽으로 I-90/I-80, 중간인 I-80, 약간 남쪽으로 I-40 그리고 제일 남쪽으로 골프만을 따라 가는 I-10 가 주 도로입니다.

I-90를 따라서는 가 본 곳이 많고, I-80 는 다음에 또 한 번 갈 기회가 있을 것 같고, I-10 보다는 I-40가 들릴 곳이 많은 것 같아 이번엔 I-40 를 따라가며 구경할 만한 곳울 찾을 예정입니다. 여름이라 I-40 를 따라가는 것이 더위 때문에 좀 걱정이 돼기는 했지만 이번 기회가 아니면 또 갈 기회가 없을 것 같아 I-40 를 택했습니다.

버지니아에서 시작하여 쉐난도 스카이 웨이를 따라 남행을 하여 테네시에 있는 스모키 마운틴과 조지아에 있는 록시티를 들린 후 네쉬빌에서부터 I-40 를 따라 서행을 할 예정입니다. I-40를 따라 가다 뉴멕시코 산타회를 구경한 후 방향을 바꾸어 복쪽으로 유타에 있는 모뉴멘트 밸리를 들린 후 아리조나 주 그랜드 케년보다는 세도나를 방문할 예정입니다. 세도나를 방문 후 네바다 주 에 있는 후보댐을 지나 데스 발리, 요세미티 공원을 거쳐 샌프란시스코로 향하는 코스입니다. 지도 상으로는 3676 마일 거리에 운전만 66 시간이네요.

미국이 큰 나라라는 것을 알고 있었지만 대륙횡단을 차로 하면서 그 크기를 진정으로 알 수 있을 기회가 되겠습니다.

한가지 꼭 명심하실 것은 떠나기 전에 차를 위에서 아래, 앞에서 뒤까지 점검하는 것은 필수 입니다. 저희들 여행을 시작하는 날 미 동부 쪽에 고온 기록을 깨는 더위가 한창이었으니까요.

If you live in the central region, there isn't many opportunities or courage to cross the America from coast to coast by the car. However, we had an opportunity to travel from Virginia to California by car. We studied which route to use for the cross country. There were four basic options: Taking I-90/I-80 in the near north side, I-80 crossing the middle section, taking I-40 near south side or follow I-10 further south near the Golf.

We eliminated I-90 route first since we have visited the number of states along the route. I-80 was eliminated since we will have more opportunities to travel to the Rockies using this highway. Between I-10 and I-40, we choose I-40 because there were more places along I-40 we wanted to visit. There was a concern with hot weather choosing I-40 in the summer, but we decide to take I-40 since it was less likely we would visit this area in the future.

First, we plan to head south following the Shenandoah skyway drive in Virginia. Then, before heading west taking I-40 at Nashville, we will make the stops at Smoky Mountain in Tennessee and Rock City in Georgia. We would change the direction and head north toward the Monument Valley in Utah after visiting Santa Fe in New Mexico. After debating whether we should stop at the Grand Canyon or Sedona, we decided to save the Grand Canyon for the later visit. After Sedona, our next stop will be Hoover Dam in Nevada before heading toward San Francisco after stops at Death Valley and Yosemite. The total distance is 5916 Km which requires 66 hours of driving according to the on-line maps.

I knew the USA is large country, but this will be the time to find and appreciate its size by driving through it.

One thing you have to remember is that you MUST check the car from top to bottom and from front to back before you start the trip. The day we started our journey across USA had seen the number of record high temperatures in the eastern part of the country.

California - San Francisco Street Scene (2) (켈리포니아 샌프란시스코 시내 구경 (2))

샌프란시스코 거리를 걸으며 본 거리 풍경 2탄 입니다. 샌프란시스코 케이블카 거리의 예술가(?)들. 춤 솜씨는 대단했습니다.

샌프란시스코 케이블카는 세상에서 단 하나 남은 수동으로 작동하는 케이블카 시스템입니다. 케이블카가 반환점에 도착하면 자력으로 회전하는 것이 아니고 회사원들이 힘으로 땅에 있는 원통을 돌려 케이블카를 출발 방향으로 돌립니다.
San Francisco cable car is the last cable car system which is manually operated .When the cable car comes to the turn-around, the company workers, not its own power, rotate the turntable so that it faces in the right direction.

탑승이 허락되면 서로 좋은 자리에 앉겠다고 달려와 오릅니다.
There is a mad dash to get a seat in the open car section when it is allowed to board the cable car.

그러나 탑승 전에 알고 있어야 할 규칙은 음료수을 가지고 탈 수 없습니다. 새로 산 마실 것들을 아깝게 이렇게 버려두고 가네요. 아마 병에 들은 것은 가방에 넣어 두면 괞찮겠지요.
But, you must remember that you can not board the cable car with the drinks. It is sad to see the passengers leaving behind new drinks. You may put the bottle in the bag.

까만 색안경을 쓰고 있는 분이 운전사 입니다. 가면서 꽤 재미 있게 농담을 하시던군요. 특히 아가씨들에게...
The man with sun glass is the driver of the cable car. On the way to Fisherman's Wharf, he humored the passengers and joked especially with young ladies.

멀리 샌프란시스코만이 보이네요. 승차권은 편도에 7불입니다.
The San Francisco bay is seen far away. The ticket price is $7 one way.

We stopped at Japan Town to buy the mochi.

It was surprising to find a Korean restaurant in the middle of Japan town.

It was getting dark when we arrived at Chinatown by foot after visiting Fisherman's wharf.

샌프란시스코로 들어 오는데 산 마테오 다리에서 본 저녁 노을이 너무 아름답네요.

샌프란시스코 구경을 하는 동안 묵은 호텔입니다. 시 중심지에서는 멀었지만 기차 역이 가까운 것이 다니기에는 불편이 없었습니다. 방은 깨끗했고 침대는 편했지만 가운데로 약간 기우는 듯 했습니다. 아침 식사는 간단 했지만 괜찮았고 특히 불루베리 머핀과 햄/치즈/겨란 퍼프가 맛 있었습니다. 호텔 입실 수속을 할 때 들리던 기차 소리 떄문에 약간 걱정이 되었지만 밤에는 별로 방해가 되지 않았습니다.

We stayed at this hotel while sightseeing San Francisco since it was away from the city, but it was convenient with the easy access to the train station. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable but slightly sagged to the middle. The breakfast was simple, but decent. We liked the blueberry muffin and hem & cheese egg puff. At the check-in, we were concerned about the train sound, but it wan't bad during the night.

샌프란시스코 구경을 나섰다가 흥미 있는 길거리 풍경이 많아 따로 모아 보았습니다.
We collected many interesting street scenes which we came upon as we ventured out to see San Francisco.

UN Plaza (유엔 플라자)
샌프란시스코 바트를 이용해 아시아 미술관을 찾아 가느라 유엔 를라자에서 하차했습니다. 오늘 우리가 운이 좋았던 모양 입니다. 유엔 를라자에는 매 주 수요일, 금요일, 일요일에 열린다는 농산물 직판장이 열리고 있어 구경 거리가 많았습니다. 이곳 저곳 구경하다 백도를 몇개 샀는데 단게 무척 맛있었습니다.
We got off the BART at UN Plaza station on the way to the Asian Art Museum. It was a lucky day for us that it was the day when  is open at UN Plaza. It is open every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. We bought few white peaches and they were sweet and delicious.

닭구이를 사려고 긴 줄이 선것이 무척 맛있어 보이는데 점심 선약이 있어 그만 저희들에게는 그림의 떡 이네요.
There was a long line to buy the roasted chicken and it suppose to be very good. But it was a pie in the sky for us because of the previous lunch appointment.

유엔 플라자에서 시청 쪽으로 걷다 보면 개척자 기념비가 있습니다. 이 기념비는 1906년 대 지진 때 무너지지 않은 독립된 건물들 중에 하나라고 합니다.
Pioneer Monument is located between UN Plaza and City Hall. It is one of few free-standing structure that withstood the 1906 earthquake.

시빅센터에 도착하니 크기가 7 미터나 되는 빨간 연꽃이 저희들을 기다리고 있네요. "숨쉬는 꽃"이라고 불리우는 이 연꽃은 한국의 최정화 조각가가 아시아 미술관의 "아시아의 환상"의 전시품 중의 하나로 만든 조각품입니다. 2012년 9월2일까지 전시된다고하네요.
When we got to Civic Center Plaza, the 24-foot sculpture of red lotus, titled "Breathing Flower", was waiting for us. It was created by Korean artist Choi, Jeong Hwa and is being showcased as part of the Asian Art Museum's "Phantoms of Asia" which will run through Sept. 2, 2012.

Union Square (유니온 스퀘어)
오늘은 유니온 스퀘어 근처에 있는 웨스트필드 몰 (Westfield Mall)에서 점심을 먹으러 주차를 해 놓고 걷는데 많은 사람들이 호텔 위를 바라보며 구경을 하고 있드군요. 무엇인가 했더니 그랜드 하얏트가 올해로 두번째 주체하는 행사인데 특별 올림픽을 위한 모금으로 2000불 이상 모금을 한 사람들은 이 호텔 옥상에서 현수 하강할 기회를 준다고 하네요. 올해는 100명이 현수 하강한다고 합니다.
As we walked toward the Union Square for the lunch at Westfield Mall, lots of people were standing on the side walk and watching up the hotel. It was the second annual "Over the Edge" fundraising for Special Olympics hosted by the Grand Hyatt. One hundred people who raised 2000 dollars rappelled down 36 stories.

유니온 스퀘어는 1906년 지진 이후 샌프란시스코 지역 제일의 상가를 이루면서 쇼핑 지역으로 널리 알려져 있습니다. 한 가운데 있는 기념비는 1998년 스페인-미국 전쟁 당시 해전에 승리한 듀이제독을 기념하기 위하여 세워졌습니다.
After the 1906 earthquake, Union Square became the center of San Francisco's premiere shopping district. The 90 foot high column in the center was raised to memorializes Admiral Dewey's naval victory during the Spanish-American War of 1898.

유니온 스퀘어에 있는 심장 모양의 조각물들은 샌프란시스코 곳곳에 세워져 있는 130개 중의 하나이며 샌프란시스코 종합 병원을 돕는 "샌프란시스코의 마음"이란 프로젝트의 하나입니다.
The heart on display at Union Square is part of 130 hearts installed throughout city and is part of the "Hearts in San Francisco" project which the San Francisco General Hospital.

3일 동안 있으면서 다양하게 들려보도록 노력한 켈리포니아 샌프란시스코 맛집들 입니다.
We have tried to visit the variety of restaurants in 3 days we stayed in San Francisco, California.

한식 (Korean):

2013년 9월에 다시 들렸는데 음식 맛은 여전하더군요. 늦었다고 사리도 미리 갖다주어 배부리 먹었습니다.
Bi Bim Naeng Myun and Maewoon Galbi Jjim are still tasty when we stopped on September, 2013. Because it was close to the closing time, they brought out the extra noodle without asking for them and it was more than enough to fill our stomach.

냉면을 잘한다고 하는데 물냉면은 별로 였지만 비빔 냉면은 약간 매운 편이었지만 맛 있게 먹었습니다. 저희는 양이 작은 편이라 더 못 먹었지만 덤으로 사리는 무제한 준다고 하네요. 매운 갈비찜도 괜찮았습니다. 냉면은 9불 정도인데 갈비찜은 30불이 넘은 것으로 기억하네요.
This place is known for Naeng Myun (Cold noodle soup). We ordered Mul Naeng Myun and Bi Bim Naeng Myun. Mul Naeng Myun was nothing to brag about, but Bi Bim Naeng Myun was hot (maybe a little too hot) and very tasty. Maewoon Galbi Jjim (meat in the hot pot with vegetables) was OK. Naeng Myun was about $9 and Maewoon Galbi Jjim was more than $30.

식당이 쇼핑몰에 있어 주차는 문제가 없구요 종업원들은 친절했습니다.
Parking is not a problem since the restaurant is in the mall and the service was good.

중국식 (Chinese):

짜장면과 깐풍기(Fried Chicken Wings) 가 유명하다고 하여 점심 시간에 들렸습니다. 간짜장은 맛은 괜찮은 편인데 양이 다른 식당들 보다 적었고 (혼자 먹기에도 적을 수 있습니다) 깐풍기는 약간 매운 맛이 소문처럼 꽤 괜찮았습니다. 후라이드 빈 (Fried Bean)은 맛은 있는데 다른 접시와 함께 시키면 좋을 듯 합니다.
San Tung is known for Jja Jang Myun (Dry Black Bean Source Noodle) and Fried Chicken Wings and we stopped for the lunch. Jja Jang Myun was better than average, but the portion was small (even small for one person). Fried Chicken Wings was a little spicy, but excellent as rumored. Fried Bean was good, but you may want to order with other dishes.

주차는 길거리 주차가 가능하지만 시간에 따라 꽤 걸을 생각을 하셔야 할 것입니다.
Street parking is available, but you may need to prepare for a long walk to find a parking spot depending on the time of the day.

American (양식):

이 식당은 웨스트 필드 쇼핑센터 식당가에 있지만 보통 패스트 음식점과는 달랐습니다. 저희들은 점심으로 간단히 먹기의해 카보 챂 살라드를 소고기와 함께 시켰는데 이것은 왠만한 한끼 식사가 될 정도로 양이 많았고 무척 맛 있었습니다. 양이 많기로는 대식가면 아마 혼자 먹어 치울수 있지 않을까하네요.
The place is located in the food court of Westfield Mall, but it is an eatery more than a usual fast food in the mall food court. We have tried Cabo Chop Salad with the tri-tip ($11) for the light lunch, but it was a full meal deal (You have to be a big eater to finish one by yourself) and it was delicious.

저희들이 방문한 날 특별 요리는 튀긴 닭과 베이콘 이었는데 너무 마른 것 같았고 좀 더 향상의 여지가 있었습니다. 돼지고기 샌드위치($7.50) (The Loin) 는 맛있게 먹었고 버펄로 닭 낼개 ($5.95/6 pc)는 매운 맛도 적당한게 정말 다시 생각나게 하는 음식입니다. 저희들은 먹어보지 않았지만 로스트 비후 (Roast Beef)가 유명하다고 하니 잡수어 보세요.
Daily special on the day we visited was Fried Chicken with Bacon. It was dry and could use improvement. The Loin ($7.50) was good and Buffalo Wings ($5.95/6 pc) was excellent. The wings was just hot enough and tasty. Whenever we see the wings, it makes us to remember Morty's. Even though we did not try, you may want to try the roast beef sandwich which suppose to be real good.

이 식당에 들리기 전에 한참 기다려야 한다는 충고을 들은지라 점심 시간보다 한 시간 일찍 갔지만 그래도 기다리는 줄이 길었습니다. 기다리는 손님이 많다는 것은 테이블도 한참 기다려야 된다는 뜻도 됨. 4명 이상은 함께 안가는 것이 좋을 듯.
크로산, 모닝번 그리고 Croque Monsieur를 주문했는데 크로산 ($3.85)은 맛이나 가격이나 다른 곳보다 못했습니다. 그러나 모닝번 ($3.85)은 알려진대로 저희들을 실망 시키지 않았습니다. 정말 맛 있습니다. 햄을 얹은 Croque Monsieur 는 맛도 좋았고 브런치로 먹기에도 알맞았습니다.
Since we were warned about the long line, we went to the place an hour before the lunch time. But we still had to wait to order. The long line could also mean a long wait for the table (not recommended for a large group).
We tried Croissant, Morning Buns and Croque Monsieur. At $3.85, we had better and cheaper croissant at other places. But the Morning Buns ($3.85) did not disappoint us. It was good. Croque Monsieur ($9.75) was tasty and good enough as the brunch.

타틴 베이커리에서 식사 후 평도 좋고하여 후식 먹으러 들렸습니다. 그런데 저희들에게는 좀 설탕 맛이 심하드군요. 아마 그것으로 유명한지는 모르겠지만.
After the stop at Tartine Bakery for the brunch, we headed to Bi-Rite Creamery for the desert  since it received good reviews. It was a little too much sugary taste for us. Maybe that is the reason why this place is famous.

Food Trucks at Upper Haight:
Stanyan St and Waller St (4:30 - 8:30 PM, Thursday)

Since we were not prepared for the chilly evening of SF weather, we did not try all of food trucks. However, the ones we tried were real good. 샌프란시스코 저녁 날씨가 어떻게나 쌀쌀한지 트럭에서 파는 몇 가지 음식 밖에 먹어보지를 못했습니다. 그러나 저희가 먹어 본 것은 생각보다 꽤 맛있었습니다.
Chairman Bao - They are known for the pork belly bao on the steamed or baked buns and we were glad we tried. They were so good. But, expect a long line to order. 이 트럭은 삼겹살 고기를 양념거리들과 찐 빵이나 구운 빵에 얹은 것으로 유명합니다. 알려진 것처럼 꽤 멋있게 먹었습니다.
El Sur - Tried chicken empanadas (meaning to wrap or cover in bread)  and it was OK for the first timer. 처음 먹어본 엠파나다 이지만 맛은 그런대로 괜찮았습니다.

Parking (주차) - Street parking is all around, but difficult, if not impossible unless willing to walk few bloc. or you could test your luck. 주변에 거리 주차가 가능하지만 먼 곳에 주차하고 걸어올 생각이 아니면 거의 불가능합니다. 아니면 행운을 점쳐봐도 되고요.
Bathrooms (변소) - There is a bathroom in McDonald (ask for the key). We heard that there is also a bathroom in Whole Foods a block down. 길건너 맥도날드에 변소가 있습니다 (카운터에서 키를 달라고 하세요). 듣기로는 한 불럭 밑에 있는 Whole Foods 가게에도 변소가 있다고 하던군요.

Japanese (일식):

재팬 타운에 있는 모지 집인데 맛 있습니다. 특히 New Summer Orange가 맛있습니다. 6 종류를 샀는데 가격은 한 상자에 $7.25 에서 $10 까지이고요 (일본 모지들이 비싼 것은 아시지요).
This is a Mochi place in Japan Town. New Summer Orange was the best among the six different mochies we tried. The price ranged from $7.25 to $10 (Usually, Japanese sweets are pricey)

Daiso:
22 Peace Plaza San Francisco CA 94115

맛집은 아니지만 제팬 타운 안에 있는 달라 가게 입니다. 정확히 말하자면 일불 50전 가게이네요. 대부분이 1불 50전입니다. 구경하기에 재미있어요.
This is a dollar store in Japan Town. $1.50 is probably more accurate since most of their merchandises are $1.50. It is a fun place to visit.
