첫번째 들린 곳은 하이웨이 35번을 타고가다 덜루스 시내에 들어가기 전에 들린 휴게소입니다. 이 곳 휴게소에서 내려다 본 덜루스 항구 전경이 단풍과 잘 조화가 되네요.

덜루스 키치 가미(Kitchi Gammi, 원주민 오지브웨이 말로 "큰 바다"란 뜻) 공원을 지나 우회전하여 "경치 좋은 길 (Scenic Route)" 따라 투하버 (Two harbors) 로 가세요. 하이웨이 61을 타시면 아래 몆 집을 놓치십니다.
Just beyond Duluth's Kitchi Gammi (Ojibway word meaning "Big Sea") Park, turn right and take the scenic route to Two Harbors. If you take highway 61 express route, you will miss next few stores.

이 가게는 훈연어 (그을린 생선)로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 송어, 연어 그리고 왕연어를 시식해 보았는데 별로인것이 제가 훈연어 팬은 아니라는 것을 알았습니다. 몰랐어도 후회는 없었겠다였어요.
This store is well known for their smoked fish. We have tried the smoked salmon, trout and king salmon, but I found our that I am not a great fan of smoked fish. Well, I could live without them.
Great lakes Candy Company

이 가게는 꽤 잘알려진 상점이라 큰 가게라 생각했는데 생각보다 아주 작았습니다. 아마 손님 10명이면 가게가 꽉 차겠드군요. 그러나 점원들은 상냥했고 직접 만든 초코렛과 캔디를 자세히 설명해주었습니다. 너무 고르기가 힘들어 이 가게에 있는 초코렛를 조금씩 다 사서 맛을 보았는데 소문이 거짓말이 아니었습니다. 정말 맛있었구요 이 곳을 들릴 수 있었던 것을 천만 다행이라고 생각합니다.
Since it was very popular store, I expected a large shop, but it was a tiny shop. About 10 people may fill the store, but the servers were very welcoming and helpful with the homemade chocolates and candies. Since it was difficult to choose, we bought little bit of every chocolate in the store and the rumor was correct. They were tasty and we were glad we did not miss this store.

초코렛을 먹다보니 커피 생각이 간절해 들린 곳입니다. 특별 메뉴에 관해서는 마셔보질 않아 평을 할 수 없지만 스콘을 먹어 보았는데 먼가 다르기는 하지만 맛있었다는 생각은 않나네요. 아이스크림은 종류가 별로 없었습니다. 커피 마실 생각이 없으시다면 그냥 지나치셔도...
We needed the drink after munching on the chocolate and stopped at Mocha Moose for the coffee. We can not comment on their specialty drink, but the scone we bought was different, but not tasty. They had only limited variety of ice cream. You may skip the shop unless you want some coffee.

Two Harbors Light Station
미네소타 북해안에서 현재 까지 운영되는 등대들 중 가장 오래된 등대입니다.
It is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Minnesota's north shore.
3M Museum

1902년에 다섯명의 사업가들이 3엠(3M) 회사를 시작한 건물입니다. 국가 사적지로 지정되어 있습니다.
The building is the birthplace of 3M where five business man embarked in 1902. It is now listed on National Registry of Historic Places.
Betty's Pies

이 가게는 후식으로 파이를 먹을 예정이었는데 돌아오는 길에 저녁을 먹게되었네요. 저녁으로 닭 페스티 (Chicken Pastie) (7불 50), 생선과 칩 (Fish and Chips) (8불50)을 먹고 후식으러 5대호 과일 파이(Great Lakes Fruit pie)를 먹었습니다. 5대호 과일 파이는 이 집에서 제일 인기가 있는 파이라고하네요. 닭 페스티는 포트 파이와 비슷하였는데 정말 맛있었구요 생선 튀김은 겉은 바삭바삭한데 안에 생선은 적당히 구어졌습니다. 후식으로 먹은 파이는 꽤 과일이 많이 들었고 소문대로 맛있습니다. 파이를 먹을 생각으로 들리곤 저녁까지 맛있게 먹은 경우이네요.
This was the place we originally reserved for the pie, but we ended up having a dinner on the way back. We ordered Chicken Pastie ($7.50), Fish and Chips ($8.50) and for the dessert, we ordered Great Lakes Fruit pie which we were told most popular. Chicken Pastie is similar to pot pie and was very tasty. The oust side of fish was crispy, but the fish was moist. The pie was very fruity and it did not disappoint us. We stopped for the pie and ended up having dinner.
이번 여행에 구스베리 폭포 주 공원과 쪼개진 바위 등대는 전에 여러번 왔었기에 들리지 않기로 했습니다. 그러나 이곳을 방문한 적이 없으면 꼭 들리시기를 추천합니다. 언제 들려도 아름다운 곳입니다. 등대사진은 엽서 등에 북해안을 대표하는 곳으로 널리 실려 있습니다.
We skipped the Gooseberry Falls State Park and Split Rock Lighthouse on this trip since we have been to these places several times before. But, if you never visited before, we string recommend to visit them. They are picturesque in all season. The lighthouse has been pictured on the postcard etc representing the north shore.
(구스베리 폭포 주 공원) Gooseberry Falls State Park
이 폭포는 하이웨이 61번을 따라 가면서 대개 첫번째 들리며 꼭 들려야 할 곳입니다. 이 공원 쉽게 찾아 갈 수 있는 폭포로 잘 알려져 있으며 주차장에서 잘 포장된 도보를 따라 잠시 가면 중간 폭포와 아래 폭포에 다다릅니다. 여기서 1.6 Km 더 가면 작으나 조용한 다섯번째 폭포에 도착합니다. 또는 강을 따라 남쪽으로 하이킹하면 호수가로 갈 수도 있습니다.
It is usually the first stop and a must-see along Highway 61. It is well known for its easy-access waterfalls. A short paved walkway from the parking lot brings you to the Lower and Middle Falls. The quiet, but smaller, Fifth Falls is a short hike of about a mile from the three main falls. Or, hike south along the river to the lake shore.
(쪼개진 바위 등대) Split Rock Lighthouse
스프릿 롹 등대 입구 바로 전에 풍치 전망대에 들렸습니다. 처음 이 전망대에 들렸는데 등대 전경은 기대 이상의 아름다음 이었습니다.
We stopped at the overlook right before the Split Rock Lighthouse entrance. It was our first time to stop at the overlook, but it was unexpected view of the lighthouse.

등대에서 수피리오 호수가로 내려가는 나무 층계. 올라오는 길이 끔찍해 보이면 산책로를 이용하세요. 멀지만 쉬운 길입니다.
The wooden steps to Lake Superior from the lighthouse. If you think it is too much labor climbing up the stairs, you may want to try the trail. It is longer, but easier trail.

Lemon Wolf Cafe

이 식당 서비스에 관해 좋지 않은 평이 많았지만 음식 평이 너무 좋아 들리기로 하였습니다. 여행 중엔 주로 간단히 식사를 하기 때문에 닭 등대 살라드 (11불)와 그날 특별 점심 메뉴애서 연어 접시 (10불)를 주문했습니다. 살라드와 채소들은 신선했고 연어도 알맞게 구어 두 접시 다 맛 있게 먹었습니다.
Even though there were quite few negative reviews about their service, we decided to try it for the good review of their food. Since we like to eat lightly while traveling, we ordered Salmon ($10.00) from the daily lunch special and Light House Salad with Grilled Chicken ($11.00). Salad and vegetables were fresh, salmon was prepared perfectly. Both dishes were excellent. With the recommendation by the server, we tried Rocky Wolf Trail pie ($4.95). It wasn't as good as the review. It could have been better with more filling. We had to wait for few minutes for the table even though we stopped after normal lunch hour, but the service was prompt and cheerful.

Palisade Head (절벽 머리)
작은 하얀 침례교회를 지난 후 오른쪽으로 들어가 차 1대가 지나갈만한 꾸불꾸불한 도로를 따라 큰 암석 절벽으로 올라가세요. 정상에 오른 후 보이는 슈피리오 호수와 그 주변 전경은 매우 아름답습니다. 그냥 절벽 난간에 앉아 전경을 마음 껏 즐기세요.
Be sure to turn by the little white Baptist church and drive up a winding single lane road to top of a large rock formation. Once you make it to the top, the view of Lake Superior and surrounding area is beautiful. Just sit on the edge and suck in the view.

테타구쉬 관광 안내소 (Tettegouche Visitor Center)
이 휴게소가 미네소타에서 가장 장비가 잘 갖추어져있고 편안한 곳인 것 같네요. 벽난로, 회의실에 전시관까지 있네요.
It is the most well equipped and comfortable rest area in Minnesota with fire places, meeting room and exhibit space.

Schroeder Cross River
그랜드 포티지에 전염병이 퍼지고있다는 소식을 들은 후 바라가 신부는 오지부와 안내원과 함께 위신컨신에 있는 마데라인 섬에서 작은 보트를 타고 떠났습니다. 그러나 도중에 폭풍우를 만났으나 다행히도 파도가 없는 크로스 강 입구로 밀려졌습니다. 감사하는 마음으로 그 자리에 나무 십자가를 세웠습니다. 나증에 화강암 십자가로 바꿔졌지만.
After learning a possible epidemic in Grand Portage, Father Baraga, a Slovenian priest, set out from Madeline Island in Wisconsin in a small boat with an Ojibwe guide. A terrible storm came during the trip, but they were blown into the quiet mouth of the Cross river. In thanksgiving, they erected a small wooden cross at the site. It was later replaced by a granite one.
크로스 강 폭포는 도로변 공원의 일부이며 크로스 강 위 다리 밑으로 지나갑니다. 운전하면서 다리에서 보는 폭포는 별로인데요 (밤새 온 비 덕분에 돌아 오는 길에 본 폭포는 더 좋드군요) 차를 세워 놓고 보도교를 걸어 보세요. 갈수만 있으면 길 건너 폭포 밑에서 보는 전경은 멋 있을 것 같은데 (길 건너 호수 쪽 다리 밑에 작은 전망대가 있습니다).
Cross River Falls are part of a wayside park and the falls go right under the bridge over the Cross River. The driving by view from the bridge is not all that great (it was better after the overnight rain), but stop and walk the pedestrian bridge for the better view. It could have been better from the base of falls if we could get down there (but there is a small overlook under the bridge on the lake side).

컷 페이스 연변 쉼터 (Cut Face Creek Wayside Rest)
화장실을 샤용하고 잠시 쉬고 갈 예정으로들렸는데 정말 경치 좋은 쉼터 였습니다. 해변가는 굿하버만을 따라 펼쳐지는데 호수가에서 본 경치는 아름다웠습니다.
We stopped here for a quick rest and use the restroom, but it was a stop with the beautiful view. The beach stretches the length of Good Harbor Bay. The view along the lakeshore is very pretty.

Harbor House Grille

저녁을 먹으려고 다른 식당을 찾다 들린 곳인데 좋은 경험이었습니다. 작고 아담한 식당인데 채소 피자 (14불 95)와 호두 햄버거 (9블 95)를 먹었습니다. 피자는 맛있게 먹었고 호두 햄버거는 특이하고 맛있었는데 양이 좀 작았습니다. 보통 햄버거 크기를 생각하고 시켰다면 배가 무척 고플 것입니다. 전체적으로 가격은 약간 비싼 편이었지만 서비스는 좋았습니다. 양보다 질을 찾으신다면 추천할만 합니다.
We stopped at Harbor House Grille because we couldn't find the restaurant we were looking for. But it was a good experience. It is a small, but cozy place and we tried Veggie Love Pizza ($14.95) and Walnut Hamburger ($9.95). Pizza was really tasty and hamburger was interesting in good way, but the size was small. If you are thinking about the usual hamburger size, you will be leaving with very hungry stomach. The price was a little high for the amount, but the service was good. If you are going for the quality, not the quantity, we would recommend this place.
Naniboujou Historic Lodge

원래는 부자와 유명인들을 위한 휴양지로 개발된 곳이었는데 1920년도 경제공황으로 개발이 중단된 곳이라는 역사 때문에 하루 묵기로 하였습니다. 지금은 국가 사적지에 올라와있습니다.
We wanted to try this place because of its history. It was originally developed as a resort for the wealthy and celebrities, but the stock market crash in 1920s stopped the plan. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
방들은 아무런 편의시설과 근대 기술 (셀폰, 와이 화이, 커피포트 등 아무 것도 없음)이 없습니다. 그러나 이 세상과 떨어져 쉬기를 원한다면 제대로 오셨습니다. 방과 변소는 아주 작았으나 (침대 주위를 겨우 돌만한 간격만 있음) 침대는 딱딱함을 조절할 수 있는 메트레스로 편하게 잤습니다.
The room is basic with no amenities and no technologies (no cell access, no wi-fi, no coffee pot etc). But, it is the right place if you want to just relax unplugged from the outside world. The room and bathroom are very small (barely enough space to walk around the bed), but the bed was comfortable with sleep number mattress.
이곳 자연석으로 만든 미네소타에서 가장 큰 벽난로가 있는 식당에서 아침을 먹을 예정이었는데 속이 좋지 않아 계획을 변경하였습니다.
We were going to try the breakfast at the restaurant because of its well known dining room Minnesota's largest native rock fireplace, but our upset stomach made us to change the plan.
역사를 경험해보고 싶다면 추천할 만 합니다. 그렇지 않다면 이 동네에서 편하게 쉴 수 있는 곳들을 찾아 보세요.
If you want to experience the history, this is the place. Otherwise, you may find other comfortable place in the area.
다음 두곳은 시간이 없어 들리지 못했지만 다시 갈 기회가 있으면 들릴 곳들 입니다. Because of time, we had to skip next two places, but we plan to visit them if we make another trip to North Shore.
Devil's Kettle Falls

부를레이 강이 두 폭포로 갈라지는데 하나는 15 미터 밑으로 떨어져 하류로 흘러 내려가는데 다른 폭포는 큰 구멍 속으로 떨어집니다. 그런데 이 푹포가 지질학자들에게 큰 숙제로 남아있습니다. 이 "악마의 주전자"로 떨어진 물들이 어디로 없어지는지 아무도 모릅니다.
하이킹: 왕복 5.8 Km에 중간 정도 힘듭니다
요금: 주차비 하루에 5불
Brule River splits into ywo waterfalls - one plunges 50 feet into a pool below and continues downstream, while the other shoots into a large pothole that has stumped geologists for decades. Where the water goes once it disappears into the "Devil's Kettle" is still unknown.
Hike: Moderate with lots of steps. about 3 mile round trip.
Fee: $5/day vehicle permit
그랜드 포티지 국립 천연 기념물 (Grand Portage National Monument)
170 Mile Creek Road, Grand Portage, MN.
이 재현된 모피 무역소는 미네소타에 있는 두개의 국립 천연기념물 중의 하나입니다. (다른 국립 천연기념물은
파이프스톤 국립 기념물 (Pipestone National Monument) 입니다) 몆년에 걸쳐 모은 유물둘과 모피 무역을 가능케한 오지비와 족을 소개합니다. 그랜드 포티지는 이 대륙의 첫번째 다국 무역의 연결 고리 였습니다. 몬트리올에서 무역품을 가지고 온 여행자와 캐나다 황야에서 모피를 가지고 온 여행자들이 만나 거래한 곳입니다.
This recreated fur post is one of only two national monuments in Minnesota (The other one is
Pipestone National Monument). It displays artifacts found over the years and tells the story of the Ojibwe who made the fur trade possible. Grand Portage was a key link in the continent's first multinational business. The voyageurs with trade goods from Montreal met voyageurs with pelts from the Canadian wilderness.

The entrance to Grand Portage State Park is almost next to the border checkpoint with Canada.
이 폭포는 비록 강 건너의 캐나다 온타이로와 공유하지만 미네소타에서 가장 큰 폭포로 높이가 37.5 미터입니다. 전망대는 주차장에서 1.5 Km 거리의 쉽게 갈 수 있는 장소에 있습니다.
This is the Minnesota's tallest waterfall at 120 feet, though it shares it with Ontario on the other side of river. It is an easy 1 mile hike to the overlooks from the parking lot.
이 폭포는 여행객들에게 큰 장애믈 이었고 이를 피해 힘든 13.7 Km의 우회길 또는 대 육상 수송로로 짐과 카누를 들고 돌아가야만 했습니다.
The falls created an obstacle for the voyageurs and they had to carry goods and canoes over a difficult 8.5 mile detour or grand portage, the nearby Gichi-onigaming trail ("Great Carrying Place").

(건플린트 산길) Gunflint Trail:
쿡 카운티 12번 돌로로도 알려져있는 건플린트 산길은 그랜드 마라이스에서 시작하여 바운다리 워터 카누 지역에 있는 사가나가 호수까지 입니다. 이 길에는 마을이 하나도 없지만 카누 타기, 낙씨, 하이킹할 곳들이 여러 군데 있습니다. 아름다운 경치를 보며 가는 이길은 한시간 반 정도 걸리나 산책로도 걸으며 자연을 즐길 수 있도록 더 많은 시간을 할애 하세요. 도로변에서 보이는 경치는 한정돼 있습니다.
The Gunflint Trail which is Cook County Road 12 is a 57 mile (92 Km) paved roadway that begins in Grand Marais and ends at Saganaga Lake in the Boundary Water Canoe Area. There are no towns along the route, but there are many places for canoeing, fishing and hiking. It is about one hour and half drive one way with beautiful scenery, but allow yourself additional time to enjoy the nature by hiking some of the trails since the viewing is limited from the road.

Take a slight right onto County Rd 60 for 6.4 miles
Turn left onto Gunflint Trail for 4.7 miles to Grand Marias
(북극광 호수 블루베리) Northern Light Lake Blueberry
그랜드 마리아스에서 21 Km 운전 후 훠레스트 길 140번을 지나면서 길 동쪽에 있는 작은 주차장을 찾으세요. 주차 후 0.8 Km 정도의 산책로를 따라 블루베리 힐 꼭대기에 오르면 거기서 보는 북극해 호수 전망은 일품입니다. 단 올라가는 길 몆군데가 가파르니 조심하시고.
At the 13 mile mark from Grand Marias, watch for a small parking lot on the east of the road after Forest Road #140. After a hike of a half mile to the top of Blueberry Hill, it offers great vistas above Northern Light Lake. But, be careful on the trail since some places are very steep.

Honeymoon Bluff Hiking Trail – Difficult and
short 0.6 mile hiking trail
부슬비가 오는데다 산책로가 가파르다라고해서 그냥 지나가기로 했습니다.We decided to skip this trail since it started to rain and the trail is very steep.
Clearwater Bakery at Clearwater Historic Lodge
이 집 파이가 맛있다고하여 들렸는데 가는 날이 장날이라고 제빵사가 시내에 나가 새로 군 파이가 없다고 하네요. 하루지난 블루베리 파이가 있다고 하여 맛은 볼 수가 있을 것 같아 먹어 보았는데 새로 군 파이라면 최고 중위 하나일 수 있다고 생각했습니다.
We stopped for their pie, but it was a bad timing. The baker went to town and there were no fresh pies. We bought a piece of Blueberry pie and we figured we could at least judge how the pie is. We thought it could be one of the best if it was fresh.

Trail Center Lodge

그랜드 마리아스로 돌아오는 길에 점심 먹을려고 들렸습니다. 이 상점은 여러가지 물건들을 취급하고 식당이 옆에 함께있는 다목적 상점입니다. 실내 장식은 황야에 있는 것 또는 필요한 것들로 채워져 있습니다. 점심으로 스프와 반 샌드위치 (6불 95)와 살라드와 마늘 국수 (7불 95)을 주문했는데 아주 맛있게 먹었습니다.
We stopped at the Trail Center Lodge Restaurant for the lunch on the way back to Grand Marais, It is multipurpose store with hodgepodge items and restaurant. The inside was decorated with the wilderness things. We tried the soup and 1/2 sandwich ($6.95) and Salad with Garlic Parmesan Pasta ($7.95). They were very good.
Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center

건플린트 산길 끝 근처 사가나가 호수 남동쪽에 역사적 휴양지를 복구해 놓은 곳이 있습니다. 이곳에 이 산길의 자연과 인간 역사를 전시해 놓고 있습니다. 이 작고 아름다운 치왁 (Chik-Wauk) 박물관은 초기 정착인, 여행객, 최근 정착인의 삶을 알려주고 있습니다. 또한 다섯개의 자연 산책로가 이 곳의 50 에어커에 펼쳐져 있습니다.
Near the end of the Gunflint trail, on a southeast bay of Saganaga Lake, a historic restored resort lodge presents exhibits on the natural and human history of the trail. The lovely small museum, Chik-Wauk Museum, profiled what the life was like for early settlers, voyageurs and recent settlers. Five nature trails wind through the center's 50 acres.

돌아 오는 길 스플릿 팍 등대 근처에서 본 무지개 (Rainbow near the Split Rock Light House on our back home). 여행하면서 돌아오는 길에 거의 꼭 한번씩 보게 되는 무지개.. (We have seen the rainbow on our way back home from the most of our trips).
후기 (epilogue):
미네아폴리스에서 시작하여 1박2일은 빠듯하고 2박 3일은 좀 길겠다는 생각입니다. 골프나 낙시를 하신다면 또 다르지만... 단 둘루스 관광을 포함하면 2박3일은 잡으셔야 할 것 입니다.
Starting from Minneapolis, 2 days 1 night is tight, but 3 days 2 nights might be too long. It is different story if you plan to play the golf or fishing. You would need 3 days if you include the tour of Duluth.
