Minnesota Shopping (미네소타 쇼핑)

쇼핑과는 거리가 멀지만 미네소타에 처음이신 분들께는 혹 도움이 될까해서. (Not an expert shopper, but it may help the new comers in Minnesota).


Mall of America

몰 어브 아메리카 (Mall of America)는 미국에서 가장 큰 (면적으로) 쇼핑 몰 입니다. 몰 안에는 500개가 넘는 상점, 테마 파크, 수족관에 결혼식장까지 있습니다. 한 상점에서 10분씩만 보내도 모든 상점을 들릴려면 3일 반이 걸립니다.

테마 파크/Theme Park

Mall of America is the largest mall in the United States. It has more than 500 stores, a theme park, aquarium and wedding chapel and more. If you spend 10 minutes at each store, it would take you 3.5 days to complete your journey.


Twin Cities Premium Outlets (투인 시티 프리미엄 아웃렛)

몰 어브 아메리카 (Mall of America) 에서 5분 거리에 생긴 아웃렛 몰입니다. 다른  아웃렛 몰에 없는 가게들이 있으나 전체적으로 다른 아웃렛 몰들과 비슷하다는 느낌입니다. 주차는 별로 힘들지 않았으나 편하시면 몰 어브 아메리카 (Mall of America) 에 차를 세워 넣고 셔틀 버스를 이용하셔도 됩니다.

This new outlet mall is about 5 minutes away from Mall of America. It has few unique stores compared to other outlet malls, but in general, it had similar feeling as any other outlet malls. We did not have any problem with the parking, but you may want to use the shuttle bus from Mall of America if it is more convenient.


Albertvile Premium Outlets (앨버트 프리미엄 아웃렛)

미네아풀리스에서 북서쪽으로 한시간 정도 떨어저 있는 아웃렛 입니다. 긴 연휴 때 가끔 들리던 곳입니다. 년말에는 주차하는 것만 몆시간씩 기다려야 할 정도로 바쁜 곳입니다. 가격을 미리 조사하고 가면 좋은 물건을 싸게 구입할 수 있습니다. 외국 여행자들, 특히 일본 여행자들이 (일본어로 안내 광고를 할 정도) 많이 들리던 곳입니다.

This mall is located in northwest from Minneapolis and it is about one hour drive from Minneapolis. We used to shop here during the long weekend. This place gets so busy during the Thanksgiving/Christmas season, you may have to wait for few hours just to find a parking spot. You may be able buy things at very good price if you do your research on price before you go. This mall seems to be well known to the foreign travelers, especially Japanese visitors (they even have the announcements in Japanese).

소문 듣고 들렸던 곳입니다. 이 상점은 벼룩시장, 수취인 없는 물건 파는 곳, 골동품점, 가구점을 섟어 놓은 곳 같은 곳입니다. 정말로 마구잡이 가게입니다. 백화점이 아니라 중고품 염가 판매를 즐기는 분이라면 이곳에서 쇼핑을 아주 즐기실 것입니다.  특별히 살 물건이 없더라도 심심찮은 구경거리는 될 것입니다. 그러나 한가지 명심하실 것은 이곳에서 음식물은 사지 마실 것을 추천합니다. 자주 가지는 않겠지만 심심풀이 할 곳은 됩니다.

We stopped here out of curiosity after hearing the rumor about this store. This place is a little bit everything: flea market, unclaimed things, antique shop and furniture shop. It is a random shop. You will enjoy more if you are a garage sale shopper, not a department shopper. If you don't find anything you need at this place, there is at least entertainment value. Not sure if I would buy the foods here. We won't be stopping here often, but it would be a good place to kill time.


Grama's Barn

그라마의 반 (Grama's Barn) 은 미네소타 센터 시티를 지나는 하이웨이 8번 길에 있는 독특한 상점입니다. 미네아폴리스에서 차로 가면 북쪽으로 약 50분 거리입니다. 골동품, 그림, 공에품 등이 있지만 정원을 꾸미기에 좋은 요정 장식물들이 많았습니다. 맘에 드는 것이 몇개 있었지만 약간 비싼 것 같아 그냥 왔습니다.

Grama's Barn is a unique shop on Hwy 8 in Center City, Minnesota. It is about 50 minutes drive north from Minneapolis. It has some antique, some arts and some crafts, but it has large selection of Fairy Garden items.

Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

미네소타 수목원은 미네소타 대학 원예학과에 속해 있습니다. 이 수목원은 미네소타에서 가장 크고 다양하고 완벽한 원예원입니다.

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is part of the Department of Horticultural Science at University of Minnesota. It is the largest, most diverse and most complete horticultural site in Minnesota.

저희들은 여름과 가을에 들렸었는데 조용한 곳에서 자연에 빠지고 싶으시면 찾아가 보세요. 그렇지만 만약 "아름다운" 정원을 기대하고 가신다면 입장료가 너무 비싸다고 하실 것입니다.

We visited the arboretum both during the summer and fall and this is the place if you just want to immersed in the nature without noise. You may think the fee might be too high if you are just looking for the "pretty" gardens.

참고로 구내 식당이 꽤 비싼 편이니 가능하면 점심을 준비해 오셔서 피크닉을 하세요. 정말 맛있어요.
Bring your own food and have a picnic at the garden. The cafeteria is very pricey. The food taste much better.


North Shore Drive

이 길은 "전미 도로"로 지정된 길이며 가을 단풍길 중 가장 인기있는 길 중 하나입니다.
This road designated as an "All American Road" is one of very popular routes for fall color fans.

St Croix Scenic Byway
Between Prescott and Taylors Falls, Minnesota

세인트 크로이스 풍치도 (St Croix Scenic Byway)는 1855년에 포인트 더글러스 에서 위신컨신 슈퍼리어 까지 개발된 길을 따라 갑니다. 이 길은 원래 군 이동을 위해 딱아졌는데 곧 민간인들과 상업 교통이 몰려들기 시작했습니다.

St Croix Scenic Byway follows a route established in 1855 between Point Douglas and Superior, Wisconsin. Even though it was originally intended for the troop movement, it attracted the flood of civilians and commercial traffic

저희들은 이 길에 있는 에프톤 (Afton) 스틸워터 (Stillwater) 그리고 테일러 훨 (Taylor Fall) 마을 주변의 길을 다녀 보았습니다. 주 도 95번과 국도 8번이 만나는 곳에 있는 Franconia Sculpture Park (프랜코니아 조각 공원) 을 들려보시고 테일러 훨에서는 큰 구덩이로 유면한 인터스테이트 공원 (Interstate Park) 을 구경하세요.

We did travel the section of byway around towns; Afton, Stillwater and Taylors Fall. Where highway 95 meets US highway 8, visit the Franconia Sculpture Park with a rotating collection of more than 75 contemporary sculptures. At Taylors Fall, tour the giant "potholes" in Interstate Park.

26th St off US 61, Hastings, MN

버밀론 폭포는 도시 한 가운데에 주도 61번에 가까운 제분 공장 옆에 있습니다. 폭포 전망대까지는 주차장에서 그리 멀지 않으나 나무들 때문에 폭포가 가려져 있습니다.

Vermillion Fall is right in town off Highway 61 next to an old mill. It is short walk from the parking lot to the overlook for the falls. The views are partially obstructed.

공원과 강 계곡을 지나는 다리까지 포장된 산책길이 있어 편하게 구경할 수 있습니다. 강 하구로 산책길이 있는데 유지되지 않고 있지만 몆군데 사람들이 다닌 길을 따라 계곡 밑으로 내려가서 구경 할 수 있습니다.

There are paved trails through the park and a bridge crossing the river gorge. If you follow the trail downstream, you will find places where people have climbed down into the gorge. But there are no maintained trails in the gorge.

가을 오후를 지내기에 딱 좋은 곳입니다.
It was a nice way to spend a Fall afternoon.

좀 더 여행을 하시기를 원하신다면 국도 61번을 따라 남쪽으로 라 크레센트까지 가 보세요. 미시시피 강 계곡 길 (Mississippi River Valley road)로 알려져 있는 길입니다.

If you want to travel further, follow US 61 south all the way to La Crescent. It is known as Mississippi River Valley road.

꽤 오래 전에 이 길을 따라 여행을 하였기에 기억도 가물 가물 하지만 가을 단풍이 꽤 아름다웠고 미시시피 강을 따라 있는 전망대에서의 경치가 좋았다고 기억합니다.

The trip we took was a long time ago and our memories are not that clear. But, the Fall hue was bright and beautiful and the scenery from the several overlooks along the Mississippi River was excellent.

신문 기사를 보니 이곳 전시물들을 몆개씩 매년 바꾼다고하여 다시 들렸습니다. We decided to visit the park again since the newspaper article mentioned that they change part of the sculptures every year.

오늘 여행지는 미네아폴리스(Minneapolis)에서 북동쪽으로 한시간 거리에 미네소타 주(Minnesota) 와 위스컨신 주(Wisconsin) 경계에 있는 테일러즈 훨 (Taloys Falls) 입니다. 먼저 소개한 인터스테이트 스테이트 공원(Interstate State Park) 옆에 있는 프랜코니아 조각 공원 (Franconia Sculpture Park) 을 들릴 예정입니다. 인터스테이트 스테이트 공원 링크는 이 글 밑에 있습니다.

Today's plan is to visit Franconia Sculpture Park next to Interstate State Park in Taylors Falls, Minnesota. It is located in the northeast of Minneapolis bordering with Wisconsin and is about one hour drive from Minneapolis. The link to Interstate State Park is shown at the bottom of blog.

조각에 대해서는 무뢰한이니 조각물의 감상평은 생략하겠습니다. 그러나 특이한 조각들을 보며 즐거운 시간을 가졌습니다. 한번은 찾아 볼만 합니다.
We are not knowledgeable enough to provide the opinion for the sculptures, but it is for sure that we had a good time looking at the unusual sculptures. You won't be disappointed if you decided to stop by.

저희가 들린 날은 녹은 철로 각자 디자인한 것을 모양 뜨기를 하던군요.
On the day we visited, the visitors were able to casting molten iron on their own design.

위스카신 쪽 하이웨이  8번 도로에서 워싱톤 길을 따라 북쪽으로 가다 보면 세인트 크로이 폭포 (St Croix Falls) 댐에 있는 전망대가 왼쪽에  나옵니다. 옆에 수력 발전소가 있습니다.
St Croix Falls Dam overlook is on your left if you head north on Washington St from Highway 8 in the Wisconsin side. There is a hydro generation station next to the dam.

오늘 여행지는 미네아폴리스(Minneapolis)에서 북동쪽으로 한시간 거리에 미네소타 주(Minnesota) 와 위스컨신 주(Wisconsin) 경계에 있는 테일러즈 훨 (Taloys Falls)에 위치한 인터스테이트 스테이트 공원(Interstate State Park)입니다. 미네소타에서 살면서 도로에 구멍 난 것 보느라 공원에 간다는 것이 우스워 항상 이 스테이트 공원을 그냥 지나치곤 했습니다. 미네소타는 추운 겨울 덕분에 봄이 되면 도로에 구멍(pothole)이 파이는 것으로 유명하거든요. 잘못하면 자동차 수리비가 꽤 나올 수 있습니다. 그러다 이곳 가을 단풍이 아름답다하여 친구 집에 가는 도중에 들렸습니다.

Today's plan is to visit Interstate State Park in Taylors Falls, Minnesota. It is located in the northeast of Minneapolis bordering with Wisconsin and is about one hour drive from Minneapolis. We did not stop at the Interstate State Park to see the potholes since it is something weird to go to the park to see the potholes in Minnesota. The potholes during the spring in Minnesota are common as the sand in the beach. These potholes are known to cause the expensive repair on your car repair. But we stopped this time for the fall colors on the way to the friend's house.

이 주립공원은 위스컨신 주와 공동으로 이루어졌으며 미국에서 처음으로 주와 주가 함께 조성한 공원입니다. 이 곳에 생긴 빙하 팥홀(Glacier Pothole)은 마지막 빙하가 녹아 세인트 강으로 흐르면서 생긴 소용돌이가 만든 구멍을 일컫는 것입니다. 이곳에 있는 18.3 미터 보다도 깊은 "밑이 뚤린 구멍(Bottomless Pit)"은 세계에서 가장 깊은 탐험된 빙하 팥홀입니다.

저희들은 팥홀(pothole) 등산길을 따라 걸었는데 앵글 록 (Angle Rock)에서 보는 경치와 세인트 크로이 강의 경치는 정말 한 폭의 그림입니다. 이 등산길을 따라 가면 크기와 깊이가 다른 팥홀들을 볼 수 있습니다. 이 등산길은 그다지 힘들지는 않는 길인데 그러나 방문객들로 북적될 수 있습니다.

The park was the joint venture with Wisconsin and is the first interstate park in the nation. As the last glacier thawed, the whirlpools formed by rushing the Glacier St Croix River carved the hole called glacial potholes. The world's deepest explored glacial pothole is the the Bottomless Pit which is deeper than 60 feet.

We hiked the Pothole trail which is worth the hike with the fantastic view of Angle Rock and the St Croix River. The trail leads to the potholes of various size and depth. It is fairly easy trail, but it could be very crowded with the visitors.

저희들이 공원에 들렸을 때는 가을 단풍을 보기에는 좀 이른 편이었지만 팥홀 등산길 (Pothole Trail)에서 보는 경치는 그림 같았습니다.
When we visited the park, it was a little early for the fall color. But the view from the Pothole Trail was picturesque.

생각지 않았던 구경거리는 높이가 다른 암벽을 타는 등산반들 이었습니다.
One unexpected scene were the groups of climbers who scaled the different heights of walls.

한가지 꼭 명심하셔야 할 것은 딱지 받고 불쾌한 경험을 하고 싶으시지 않으시다면 하루 입장권(주차료=5불)을 꼭 구입하십시오. 또한 시간이 되시면 유람선이나 카누룰 타보세요.
One recommendation is that you make sure you pay the parking (a daily pass=$5) if you want to avoid the unpleasant experience with tickets. Also, you may ride the river boat or canoeing if you have time.

Our Place Cafe

등산로를 걷는 것이 배를 출출하게 만든다면 공원에서 동쪽으로 하이웨이 8를 따라 가다 4 Km 떨어져있는 아우어 플레이스 카페 (Our Place Cafe)를 들려보세요. 맛은 괜찮은 편이었고 가격 (2인 19불)도 적당했습니다.
If the trail walking makes you hungry, try Our Place Cafe which is located at 2.3 miles east of the park on highway 8. The food wasn't bad and the price was reasonable ($19 for two).

Dalles Bakery & Coffee House
113 S Washington St St. Croix Falls WI

점심 먹을 곳을 찾다 댈즈 제과점 (Dalles Bakery) 평이 좋아 들리기로 하였습니다. 취향에 맞혀 주문하는 살라드 (5가지 재료, 6불 99전)와 어린이 메뉴에 있는 구운 치즈 (4불 99전)를 주문했습니다. 샐러드 채소는 싱싱했고 올리브도 생각 보다 많이 들었드군요. 구운 치즈는 지역 치즈를 사용했는데 괜찮았습니다. 이태리식 크림 소다 (3불 25전)는 기대치 보다 못했고 추천할 수 있는 것은 아니더군요. 날씨가 너무 더워 이 집 커피는 먹어 보지 못했습니다. 실내 장식은 별로 볼 것이 없구요. 방문객들이 많을 때는 주차가 힘들 수도 있을 것같군요.

With some good reviews, we decided to try Dalles Bakery. We ordered the Build Your Own Salad with the choice of 5 ingredients ($6.99) and Grilled Cheese from children's menu ($4.99).  The vegetables were fresh with large portion of olive, and Grilled Cheese was OK with local cheese. Italian Cream Soda ($3.25) is not what we expected and we recommend to try something else. It was too hot day to try their coffee. The interior decoration is nothing special. When the area is busy with the visitors, the parking could be a problem.

Loggers Bar & Grill

We met friends at this restaurant with some reservation about their services and decor. But, the service was excellent both times and the decor was OK unless you don't want to eat under the stuffed animals.

For the food, we tried Whiskey Glazed Sandwiches ($9.77), Cod dinner ($10.97) and Steak Sandwich ($11.97). The meals were very good even though the fish dinner was served with 2 small pieces for the price. The side salad was fresh and good. The mini donuts ($4.97) were served hot and they were good to share like the fair item.

We stopped twice for Saturday lunch, but we weren't rushed and enjoyed the stay. We recommend the place.

위스칸신 메디슨에 살던 알렉스 조단이 설계하고 지은 이  "암석 위의 집"은  19 미터 높이의 굴뚝 같이 생긴 암석 위에 있으며 와이오밍 계곡을 내려다 봅니다. 동양식 뱀 조각의 화분들이 들어 가는 입구와 정원 곳곳에서 당신을 환영합니다.

Designed and built by Alex Jordan of Madison, WI, the House On The Rock is perched on a 60-foot chimney of rock and overlooks Wyoming Valley. Big pseudo-oriental serpent planters greet you at the entrance and are located throughout the yard.

방문객들은 나무들 위 115미터 높이의 램프를 지나 집 입구로 가게 되며 이 집은 세상에서 제일 많이 상당한 양의 특이한 물건들을 수집해 놓은 것 같읍니다. 수집품들은 동양 미술품, 스티인드 유리로 만든 전등과 유리창, 회전 목마, 기계화 된 악기들 등 여러가지 였습니다. 이 수집품들이 잔짜인지 가짜들인지 확인할 방법은 없더군요.

A 375-foot ramp through treetops takes visitors to the entrance and it is the world's most bizarre and vast collection of stuff. The collection includes Oriental art, stained glass lamps, carousel horses and mechanical music machines. We couldn't find if they are real and/or fake.

 "무한한 방 (Infinite Room)"이라고 불리우는 열 네번째 방은 1985년에 증축됐는데 정말 장관적입니다. 이 유일 뮤일한 방은 유리로 벽이 되어있으며 67 미터가량 와이오밍 계곡으로 뻗어나가 있습니다. 3264 개의 유리창문이 있는 이방은 의심의 여지 없이 세상에 하나 밖에 없는 방일 것 입니다. 유리로 된 탁자를 통해서는 48 미터 밑에 있는 산림층을 내려다 볼 수 있습니다. 

The 14th room, the Infinity Room, was added in 1985 and proves to be the most spectacular. This unique room with walls of glass, projects out over the Wyoming Valley 218 feet. With 3,264 windows, there's no doubt about it, there truly is no other room like it in the world. A glass cocktail table provides visitors with a view of the forest floor 156 feet below.

이 관광지는 3 구역으로 나누어져 있고 셀프 가이드로 구경을 하게 되어 있습니다. 몆 구역을 구경할 것인가에 따라 입장료 가격이 다릅니다. 저희들이 구경한 것은 본채인데 약간 밀실 공포증을 줄 정도로 좁고 어두었습니다. 특이한 것을 좋아한다면 이 암석 위의 집을 방문하세요. 그러나 전체적으로 쇠퇴해가는 느낌을 주더군요. 그러나 "무한한 방 (Infinite Room)"은 참으로 인상적이었고 그 곳에서 보는 경치는 아름다웠습니다.
The attraction is divided into three self-guided tours. The fee is different depending on the number of sections you want to tour. The original house we visited is somewhat claustrophobic with tight and dark spaces. If you are interested in the unusual things, the House on the Rock might be a place to visit, but it seems that it is in general in the state of. However, we were impressed with the infinite room and the view from the room is beautiful.

집 바깥을 아무 곳에서도 볼 수 없었던 것이 아쉬웠지만 이 집으로 올라가는 길에 있는 조망지에서 "무한한 방 (Infinite Room)" 사진을 찍은 것으로 위안을 삼았습니다.

Another disappointment is that you cannot see the outside of the house at all from anywhere. But it was some consolation that there is a picture opportunity of the infinite room from the lookout on the way to the House.

Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center

매디슨에 들려 저녁을 먹고 모노나 테라스에 잠시 들렸습니다. 옥상에서 보는 모노나 호수 경치는 매우 좋았구요 주청사까지 걸어서 다녀 올 수 있습니다.
We stopped at the Madison for the dinner and after dinner, we made a quick stop at Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. It has a great view of Lake Monona and is walking distance from the Capitol.

매디슨에 한국 식당이 몆 개 있었지만 저희들이 가는 길에서 많이 벗어나지 않는 곳을 찾았습니다. 이 식딩이 큰 식당은 아니지만 저희들이 있는 동안 식탁 대부분이 손님들로 차 있어서 음식이 아주 나쁘지는 않겠구나하는 희망이 있었습니다.
There are several Korean restaurants in Madison, but we picked one which did not require not much detour from our plan. This place does not have a large sitting capacity, but most of tables were full while we were there. It gave us hope that their food is at least decent.

비빔밥 (10블 50전)과 육개장 (10불 50전)을 시켰는데 비빔밥은 먹을만 했는데 육개장은 양념도 제대로 않됐고 추천할 수가 없네요.
We tried Bibimbop ($10.50) and Yuk Gae Jang ($10.50). While Bibimbop was average, Yuk Gae Jang needed the improvement.

저희들이 다시 매디슨에 들린다면 아마 다른 한국 식당을 찾아 볼 것입니다. 식당이 쇼핑 몰에 있어 주차는 문제가 없습니다.
If we go to Madison again, we would try other Korean restaurants. The parking was not a problem since it is located in the shopping mall.

머물 곳을 찾다 두번째 선택이었지만 편하게 하루 밤을 보낸 곳입니다. 하이웨이에서 가까운 거리이지만 조용하였고 침대와 배게가 편안 한 것이 잠을 잘 잤습니다. 할인으로 받은 아침은 숙박비가 비싸다는 생각이 안들게 하드군요. 추천합니다.

During the search to stay in Rockford, the Courtyard was the second choice, but we spent a comfortable night. Even though the hotel was close to the highway, it was very quite and the comfortable bed and pillow allowed us to have a very good sleep. We recommend the place.

Places to Visit in Illinois -1 (일리노이 여행기 - 1 편)

갈레나, 일리노이 (Galena, Illinois)

아이오와 드뷰크를 떠나 하이웨이 20을 따라 동쪽으로 향하면 1800년 초기에 지어진 집과 건물들을 복구해논 마을에 도착합니다. 일리노이 갈레나 중심지에는 19세기 주요 지형지물들을 가게, 식당 또는 민박 집으로 개조한 여러 개의 건물들이 있습니다. 이 마을은 크리스마스 때에는 쇼핑으로  유명한 곳이기도 합니다. 저희들 생각은 다른 선택이 없는 이 지역에서 선택의 여지가 없지 않나 생각합니다. 그러나 이 곳에서 파는 상품들이 다른 곳에 비해 가격이 비싼 편이라는 생각이 들더군요.

If you head east on highway 20 crossing Mississippi from Dubuque, IA, you come to a town with restored homes and buildings. dating back to the early 1800s. The down town of Galena, Illinois has dozens of historic 19th century landmark buildings converted to shops, restaurants and B&B. It is known to be very popular place to shop during the Christmas season. Without any other alternative, we think, this might be only choice. However, we thought the price was expansive side for the available products at other places.

갈레나에 있는 디소토집 호텔은 일리노이에서 영업 중인 호텔 중에서 가장 오래된 호텔입니다. 이 호텔은 1855년에 개장할 때 "서부에서 가장 큰 호텔"이라고 불렸습니다. 입장료 없이 혼자 구경을 하거나 "조용한 방"이라고 불리는 곳에서 갈레나 시와 호텔 역사를 비데오로 볼 수 있습니다.

The DeSoto House Hotel in Galena is Illinois' Oldest operating hotel. It opened in 1855 and was billed as the "Largest Hotel in the West". You can take a free self-guided tour and watch video about the history of Galena and the hotel in Quiet Room.

도시 북쪽에 있는 "올드 불랙스미스 숖"은 작동하는 풀무가 있고 초기 도구와 장비가 원래대로 있습니다. 흥미 있는 곳입니다.
The Old Blacksmith Shop located in the north side is the working forges and is authentic with original tools and equipment. It is an interesting place.

그랜트 대통령의 집 (President Grant's Home)

이 집은 율리시스 그랜트 대통령이 1865년 미국 남북전쟁 영웅으로 갈레나로 돌아 왔을 때 지역 중요 공화당원들이 선물한 것이었습니다. 복구한 집의 모든 방들은 1860년 중순 경의 모습으로 가구와 장식들이 꾸며졌습니다. 많은 가구들은 그랜트 가족들이 사용하던 것입니다. 집 앞에는 그랜트 부인의 동상이 있는데 그 얼굴 모습이 전혀 영부인 같지가 않습니다 (요즈음의 영부인 기준으론). 시골 아줌마의 얼굴이랄까.

The house was presented to Ulysses Grant by a group of prominent local Republicans when he returned to the city in 1865 as a Civil War hero. All of the rooms in restored house are decorated and furnished to represent a mid-1860s appearance. Many of furnishings belonged to the Grant family. The statue of Mrs Grant is in front of the house and her face is hardly that of first lady (in today's standard). It is more of the face of country woman.

프리포트, 일리노이 (Freeport, Illinois)

이번에 들리는 곳은 구경하려고 들리는 것이 아니라 점심을 먹을 예정이었는데 도착하고 보니 식당 옆에 역사가 있는 공원이 있더군요. 날씨가 좋은 날은 이 역사있는 공원에서 점심을 먹어도 좋을 듯합니다.
Our next stop was to have a lunch, not for sightseeing. But, when we arrived at the restaurant, there was a park with history next to the restaurant. You may enjoy your lunch at the historic park on a good days.

이 식당은 100년이 넘었는데 엣날 장식으로 꾸며진 멀트 가게인데 가게 뒷쪽으론 부스나 테이블이 있습니다. 꼭 기분이 50년대 또는 60년대로 돌아간 기분이더군요. 헬로피노 고추가 들어있는 색다른 소스의 히티드 디베이트 (Heated Debate, 4불95) 와 월리 (Wally, 6불10)를 주문했습니다. 월리가 히티드 디베이트 보다는 낳았지만 이 보다 더 맛있는 햄버거들은 다른 곳에서 먹을 수 있습니다. 그러나 이 식당은 지역의 고기와 치즈만을 사용한다고 합니다. 맛에 비해 가격도 조금 비싼 편이구요. 아이스 크림은 한 숟갈만 주문한것이 천만 다행이었습니다. 한 숟갈분 (2불85)이 얼마나크든지... 음식보다는 아이스크림을 먹으러 들리세요. 또한 흥미있는 경험이었기도 하구요.

This place is 100 years old and it is decorated as an old fashion malt shop while booths and tables are available in the rear. It felt like we were back in 50's and 60's. We ordered Heated Debate ($4.95) whose source was interesting with jalapeno pepper and Willy ($6.10). But Wally was better than Heated Debate and we had better burgers than both of them. But they are using the local beef and cheese. The food seems a little over priced. We were glad that we only ordered one scoop of ice cream ($2.85). It was huge. Forget the food, but go for the ice cream. Overall, it was an interesting experience.

식당 옆에 조그마한 공원이 있는데 이곳이 1858년에 아브라함 린컨과 스테판 더글러스가 두번째 논쟁을 가진 곳입니다. 이 논쟁이 있은 후 더글러스가 상원 선거에서는 이겼지만 프리포트 정책이라고 알려진 이 성명서로 더글러스는 남부 지역의 후원을 잃고 민주당이 쪼개졌습니다. 이로 인해 1960년에 린컨이 대통령이 되는데 도움이 됐습니다.

The second of the famous debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas was held at this site in 1858. Although Douglas won the Senatorial campaign for which the debate was held, his statement known as Freeport Doctrine regarding slavery and state's rights lost him the support of South and split the Democratic Party. This enabled Lincoln to win the Presidency in 1860.

조금 오래된 호텔 같지만 방과 변소들이 깨끗했습니다. 가격도 싼 편이었고요.
The hotel was a little old look, but the room and bathroom were clean. Also, the price was more than  reasonable.

미네소타애서 이 길로 시카고를 간다는 것은 멀리 돌아가는 것이지만 한번 정도는 가볼만한 여행길 입니다.
This is a long way to travel to Chicago from Minnesota, but it is worth to try this route at least once.

프리포트에 있는 에디 케이크 집이 맛있다고하여 시식을 해볼려고 했는데 가는 날이 장날이라고 저희들이 들린 날은 휴업이라네요. We wanted to try some goodies at The Addi Cakes in Freeport, IL but the luck wasn't with us. It was closed on the day we visited.

일리노이 록포드 (Rockford, Illinois)

저희들이 고른 록포드 시내로 들어가는 길이 공사로 파혜쳐 있어 다른 길을 찾느라 많은 시간을 소비했습니다. 그러다 저희들이 갈 수있는 길을 물어 보았던 낮선 사람은 저희들의 수호 천사 여습니다. 별로 좋아 보이지 않는 지역이라 걱정을 하고 있였는데 저희들 목적지까지 인도해 주던군요. 저희들이 가든에 도착하니 문 닫기 30분 전이라 다음 기회에 들릴리라하고 방문을 포기했습니다.

The street we took into Rockford and most of neighborhood streets were under the construction and we wasted a lot of time trying to find the alternative route. A stranger whom we asked for the direction was our guardian angel who guided us to our destination from not so nice neighborhood. When we arrived at the Garden, we had only 30 minutes to the closing and we had to give up the visit for the next time.

앤더슨 일본 정원 (Anderson Japanese Garden)

이 정원은 포트랜드 일본 정원과 함께 호이치 쿠니수가 설계한 곳이고 2004년도에 일본 원예 잡지가 북미에서 가장 잘 조성된 일본식 정원으로 지명 하였습니다.

The garden along with Portland Japanese Garden  were designed by Hoichi Kunisu and were named finest Japanese Garden in North America in 2004 by the Journal of Japanese Gardening.

일리노이 록퍼드는 지난번 여행에 차질이 생겨 들리지 못했었는데 이번 기회에 들렸습니다. We stopped at Rockford IL on this trip since we were late to visit the city with the road construction.

귀엽게 "돌 사람"이라고 불리우는 "돌 수호자"는 1987년에 조각가 테레사 애그뉴가 화강암 바위로 만든 조각상입니다. 시간이 있으면 강가를 따라 산보의시간을 갖는 것도 좋습니다.

The "Rockmen Guardians", affectionately known as the "Rock Men," were made of granite boulders in 1987 by sculptor Terese Agnew. If you have time, you may take a nice stroll along the river.

존 앤더슨이 1978년에 설립하고 포트랜드 일본 정원을 설계한 호이치쿠니수가 설계한 정원입니다. 2004년 일본 원예 잡지사에서 북미에서 제일 잘 조성된 일본식 정원으로 뽑기도 했습니다.
The garden was established in 1978 by John Anderson and landscape architecture Hoichi Kunisu who also designed the Portland Japanese Garden. In 2004, the garden was named the finest Japanese garden in North America by the Journal of Japanese Gardening.

이 정원은 폭포와 연못, 시내물, 정원석, 오솔길, 전통 찻집과 영빈관 (수키야 형식으로 지은 집 )등으로  13 세기 "연못 산책" 정원으로 설계되었습니다. 수키야 형식의 특징은 섬세한 비율, 자연 재료, 나타내지 않는 품위 드리고 과시하지 않는 것입니다. 안내소에서 가까운 "숙고의 정원"은 칼 밀의 천사 조각이 있는  현대식 일본 정원 입니다.
The garden is a 13th-century "pond strolling" garden with several waterfalls and ponds, streams, rock formation, winding paths and tea house and guest house (sukiya style) The sukiya style is  characterized by delicate proportions, natural materials, a sense of quiet elegance and a lack of ostentation. The "Garden of Reflection" near the visitor center is a contemporary Japanese-inspired garden with bronze angel sculptures by Carl Milles.

이번에 다시 앤더슨 정원을 찾아 온 것을 정말 잘했다고 생각합니다. 이 정원은 도시 한 복판 복잡한 거리 옆에 있으나 산책하거나 앉아서 주위를 감상하기에 생각보다 아름답고 평화스러운 곳입니다. 저희들은 시간에 쫒겨 2 시간 정도에 다 돌아 보았지만 좀 더 시간을 보내도 좋을 듯합니다.

We were glad that we came back for this garden. It is a beautiful and peaceful place to stroll or sit and enjoy the surroundings even though it is located on a busy street in the middle of town. It took us about two hours to go around, but we suggest take a little more time.
