Europe: 7 Cities in 23 Days - Day 13: Rome-1: Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain

It is a first morning of our three day trip to Rome with the busy itinerary. We started the morning from Piazza del Popolo, and stopped at Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain and ended at Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola before the lunch.

Having a quick breakfast at Rosati next to the Piazza del Popolo. It looked so good.

Piazza del Popolo (포폴로 광장)

Piazza del Popolo was the location of the northern gate of Rome. From here, three roads span southwards in a trident formation, with the central road, the Via del Corso, running dead straight through the centre of Rome to the Piazza Venezia. Originally this would have been the route from the northern gate of Rome to the Roman Forum.

In the centre of the Piazza is an Egyptian obelisk, dating from the rule of Rameses II, which was brought to Rome in 10BC, and put in this plaza in the 16th century. On the south side of the Piazza are the twin churches of Santa Maria in Montesanto, and Santa Maria del Miracoli, sitting either side of Via Corso. The church of Santa Maria del Popolo on the north side of plaza holds two of Caravaggio’s masterpieces: the Crucifixion of Saint Peter and the Conversion of Saint Paul.

Several ornate fountains frame the square including the Fontana del Netuno and the Fontana dell Obelisco.

To the immediate east of the square lies the Pincio hill which offers fantastic views of the Piazza and of Rome.

All Saints’ Anglican Church

All Saints' Church

All Saints' Church is a small church not far from Plaza del Popolo. It is an active English speaking church of the Church of England's Diocese in Europe which is a part of the Anglican Communion. The church building is a Gothic revival red-brick construction which is a change from other highly ornamental stone and stucco churches.

There are pictures and commemorable tablet for the visit by Pope Francis in February, 2017. It was the first visit of its kind of a pope to an Anglican church community.

Don't sit on the steps!  As of 2019 you are no longer allowed to sit on the Spanish Steps to protect the site. The fine is hundreds of euros

This 135 step staircase was opened in 1735 to link the Piazza di Spagna at the bottom of the steps to the Trinita dei Monti staircase at the top, and is today a popular spot to stop but do not sit on the steps, and watch the world go by. With the funding by French, it was built to celebrate the peace between France and Spain and of the two clocks on the façade, one shows Rome time, the other Paris time. At the top of the steps you can find a large crucifix obelisk and many inscriptions carved into the stone. It is a Roman obelisk in imitation of Egyptian ones. They were made particularly popular in the 1953 movie Roman Holiday, starring Audrey Hepburn.

This site received mixed reviews from the visitors: Many say it's a must-see, especially for first-time visitors, while others reported feeling underwhelmed. But, all agree that the views from the top are worth the climb up all 135 steps. During mid April-May each year the steps are decorated with pink azaleas, making for great photos. You are also at the right place if you are looking for the Italian designer shops.

Trinità dei Monti (트리니타 데이 몬티)

The Trinità dei Monti is the 16th century French church (with later Italian Renaissance architecture) located at the top of the Spanish Steps. The Gothic church with a Renaissance facade has two bell-towers. Inside, several paintings decorate the different chapels. Among them are two works by Daniele da Volterra, a pupil of Michelangelo.

(Fountain of the Old Boat/ Fontana della Barcaccia)

In the piazza at the bottom of the Spanish Steps is the 17th century Fountain of the Old Boat (Fontana della Barcaccia), spouting water as she sinks. The story behind the ship is that the River Tiber often flooded before the city walls were built and in 1598 there was a particularly bad flooding and the Piazza di Spagna was flooded up to a meter. Once the water withdrew, a boat was left behind in the square.

Column of the Immaculate Conception

The Column of the Immaculate Conception stands in Piazza Mignanelli next to Piazza di Spagna. It is dedicated to the dogma of the Immaculate Conception that was proclaimed by Pope Pius IX, in 1854, with the Apostolic Constitution Ineffabilis Deus. This dogma states that Mary is the only human being who was born without original sin.

On the base of the column that the bronze statue of the Virgin Mary rests are 4 bronze statues of Moses, David, the prophet Ezekiel and Isaiah. Below each statue is a verse from the Sacred Scriptures that refers to the dogma of the Immaculate Conception; Gen 3:15 - Moses, Ps 45:5 - David, Ez 44:2 - Ezekiel and Is 7:14 - Isaiah.

Each year, the Holy Father visits the Piazza di Spagna to place roses as an act of homage to Our Lady, at the statue of the Virgin. These roses indicate the love and devotion of the Pope, the Church and the people of the city of Rome for the Virgin Mary.

Trevi Fountain (트레비 분수)

Trevi Fountain is the most beautiful fountain in Rome. Measuring some 20 meters in width by 26 meters in height, Trevi Fountain is also the largest fountain in the city. This is the world’s largest Baroque fountain with a distinctly mythological character, and is always a popular location – whatever time of day (or night!) you visit. This mythological site is best viewed at night when lights illuminate the fountain. However, with many tourists, you'll likely have a hard time getting a crowd-free photo here.

The myth of the Trevi Fountain:

The myth, originating in 1954 with the movie "Three Coins in the Fountain," goes like this:
If you throw one coin: you will return to Rome.
If you throw two coins: you will fall in love with an attractive Italian.
If you throw three coins: you will marry the person that you met.
In order to achieve the desired effect, you should throw the coin with your right hand over your left shoulder.

An interesting statistic is that approximately a million euros worth of coins are taken from the fountain each year. Since 2007 this money has been used to support good causes. It’s illegal to fish out coins from the fountain.

Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola

The church of Saint Ignatius at rococo piazza in Rome is linked to the origins of the Collegio Romano founded by Ignatius of Loyola in 1551. When the number of students increased, Pope Gregory XV entrusted the project of building a church dedicated to Saint Ignatius of Loyola to Orazio Grassi. The new church was consecrated in 1722. Andrea Pozzo, the Jesuit artist, completed the internal artworks: the Fake Dome, the Vault and the Presbytery in 1685. He used perspective to create cupolas and domes on the flat ceiling surface and are among the most captivating baroque masterpieces in Rome

The Fake Dome (가짜 돔)

It is one of the most famous works of art by Andrea Pozzo, known above all for its amazing and wonderful effect. Through his painting the artist creates a fake architectural work which gives an optical illusion effect. He was inspired for this masterpiece by the scenes that he had already painted for the Forty Hour Adoration devotion.

The picture we took was not good enough to post here. Sorry.

The vault (아치형 천장)

The large fresco is the main piece of decoration of the church. The paintings exalt the apostolic activity of the Society of Jesus in the world. Pozzo creates an optical illusion that gives the impression of an infinite space. The most famous painting represents the glory of Saint Ignatius of Loyola accompanied by the angels. The trigram of the IHS of Christ, the logo of the Society, on his shield shows the divine recognition of his work. The figure of Saint Francis Xavier guiding the multitude of souls converted in Asia to heaven is also highlighted.

For the best views of this dizzying work, stand on the small yellow spot on the nave floor and look up – alternatively, use the conveniently positioned mirror.

The presbytery (노회)

The presbytery and the apse are works by Andrea Pozzo. The scenic effect is amazing: the apse wall seems multilateral while in reality it is a concave wall. Pozzo worked on the frescoes between 1685 and 1701. The paintings illustrate the fundamental moments of Saint Ignatius’ vocation and the foundation of the Society of Jesus. In particular, the apse depicts the vision of La Storta (Rome).

The side altars and the tombs of the Jesuit saints

On the right of the transept we find the altar dedicated to Saint Aloysius Gonzaga produced by Andrea Pozzo. The marble altarpiece in the centre represents the ascent of Saint Aloysius to heaven. The symbols of Penance and Purity are above it. The urn in lapis lazuli containing the remains of the saint is situated under the altar.

Altar of the Annunciation

It is dedicated to Our Lady of the Annunciation and is identical to that of St Luigi Gonzaga.
The altarpiece is by Filippo della Valle.

Europe: 7 Cities in 23 Days - Day 12: Munich-2.Marienplatz and BMW

Our trip was before COVID.

Our plan for today is visit the Marienplatz and BMW museum.

Marienplatz and the Neues Rathaus/

Marienplatz has been Munich's central square since the city's foundation. It was the site of medieval jousting tournaments and until 1807, it was where markets were held. Neues Rathaus (New City Hall) fills one entire side of the square while Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) forms a gate at the far end. The Mariensäule, a tall column to the Virgin Mary erected in 1638, and the Fischbrunnen (Fish’s Fountain) in the large square are surrounded with stores and restaurants.

Atlas Rathaus/

One of the city's best-loved traditions is to watch the famous Glockenspiel on the front of the Neues Rathaus, as its mechanical figures dine, joust, and dance. It performs at 11am, noon, and 5pm daily from March through October.

Juliet Capulet Statue (줄리엣 동상)

Juliet Capulet Statue/

The bronze statue of Shakespeare’s Juliet Capulet is located beside the Altes Rathaus on the east side of Marienplatz. This is a replica of an original statue in Venora and was a gift of friendship given by the city of Verona to Munich in 1974. Notice the right breast being rather shiny, the result of being rubbed by thousands of people over the year, in hopes of good luck.

Viktualienmarkt

The Viktualienmarkt developed from an original farmers' market to a popular market for gourmets and it became a tourist magnet. There are a lot of booths where you can try various foods and drinks and you can buy flowers and a lot of other items. But be aware that most items here aren't exactly cheap at all since it is a tourist place.

BMW Museum (BMW

Next to BMW's soaring headquarters and factories at the Olympic Park is a round contemporary building with a metal shell, housing BMW's museum. Here, car fans will find examples of nearly all the models the company has made, including sports cars, racing models, and motorcycles. You can see current models and learn about the technology of modern automobile construction, as well as get glimpses of future propulsion technologies and designs the company is exploring. Those who think cars are just for getting from point A to point B might want to skip this one, but for fans of things automotive, it's a must.

Minnesota North Shore Scenic Road One Day trip from Minneapolis

We made the one day trip to the north shore for the Fall color just to escape the COVID isolation. We guess we were not the only one with the thought. Most places were crowded with visitors. We tried the places we missed on our last trip.

Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial (클레이튼 잭슨 맥기 기념비)

On June 15, 1920, three African-American circus workers, Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie, suspects in an assault case, were taken from jail and lynched by a white mob of thousands. Rumors had circulated that six African Americans had raped and robbed a nineteen-year-old woman. A physician who examined her found no physical evidence of rape.

Residents of Duluth began to work on ways to commemorate the victims of the lynching. The Clayton Jackson McGhie Scholarship Committee set up a fund in 2000. In 2003, a plaza and statues were dedicated in Duluth to the three men who were killed.

Positively 3rd Street Bakery

Baking from scratch with organic and local ingredients since 1983, we went in for some goodies for the road. Even though there weren’t many varieties because of COVID, we bought a mixed variety of cookies and bread. They weren’t as good as we expected. Maybe our expectation was too high. But, the customer service was really friendly and helpful.

Because of COVID, their main store was closed, but they were selling goodies in the box from the hut in the back. The chocolates are still delicious.

Lemon Wolf Cafe

It was operated by a new owner and the food wasn't as good as before. It was a disappointment.

Black Beach Park

In 2015, the beach was officially opened for public use after Silver Bay and the Minnesota DNR arranged to lease more than 30 acres at the site. The strikingly colored sand of the beach resulted from taconite waste rock dumped into Lake Superior decades ago. It is a beautiful black beach contrasting to the color of surroundings. The breach is a short walk from the parking lot.

Little Two Harbors/Split rock

Direction: Take the first right after the entrance gate of lighthouse.

On this visit, we visited the Pebble Beach on Little Two Harbors where a small fishing village existed about a century ago. Ellingson Island sits just offshore. It has another view of lighthouse.

Gooseberry Fall (구스베리 폭포)

We have tried Shrimp tempura ($16), Maki B combo ($15), and Hanabi roll ($15). The food wasn’t excellent, but good and we may stop again if we are around the neighborhood. Since they were following the COVID rules, they had limited tables, but the wait wasn’t too long.
