Roadside Attractions in Minnesota -1 (미네소타 길가의 구경거리 - 1 편)

미네소타에서 목적지로 가기보다는 지나 가는 길에 들리면 재미 있는 곳들 입니다. They are not the destinations in Minnesota, but they are interesting roadside attractions if your are near by.


A 500-foot tree (aka Shoe Tree)
University of Minnesota (미네소타 대학)

이 나무에서 자라는 것은 새 과일이 아닙니다. 언제, 왜 미네소타 개학 학생들이 운동화를 이 나무에 던져 올려 놓기 시작했는지 모르지만 이제는 관례적 행사가 되었네요. 이 나무는 미네소타 대학 근처 워싱톤 길 다리 서쪽 끝에 있습니다.

Shoe Tree/신발 나무

Those growing on the tree is not hybrid fruits, but shoes. It is not known when and why students started tossing their sneakers, but it is a time-honored practice. It is located at the west end of the Washington Avenue Bridge at the University of Minnesota.

Jolly Green Giant (쾌활한 녹색 거인)

하이웨이 90번을 따라 운전하시면 미네소타 (Minnesota) 불루 어스 (Blue Earth)에 있는 "쾌활한 녹색 거인" (Jolly Green Giant) 이라는 동상이 있는 곳에서 짧은 휴식 시간을 가지세요.
하이웨이 90번에서 남쪽으로 0.8 Km 떨어진 곳에 있는 이 섬유유리 동상의 높이는 16.7 미터이고 미네소타 벨리 통조림 공장에서 생산하는 녹색 거인 상품의 마스코트 입니다.

Jolly Green Giant

If you are traveling along Highway 90, the statue of "Jolly Green Giant" at Blue Earth, Minnesota would make a good place for a quick leg-stretching stop. This fiber glass statue is located at a half-mile south from I-90 and is 55 feet tall. The "Jolly Green Giant" is the mascot of Green Giant brand of Minnesota Valley Canning Company.

사과 크로상을 마침내 먹을 기회가 있었는데 저희들 의견으론 이것이 제일 입에 맞었습니다.
We finally had a chance to try the apple croissants and they are the best among the croissants we tried.

알몬드 크로상 (3불 99전)이 새로 나왔는데 사과 크로상보다 못했고 가격도 만만치않네요. Almond croissant ($3.99) is new, but it wasn't as good as apple croissant, not to mention the price.

세인트 폴 쪽에서 오전에 회의가 있어 회의 후에 점심을 먹을 만한 곳을 찾던 중 Trung Nam Bakery 을 찾았는데 평이 좋았습니다.

점심으로 월남 샌드위치를 주문하였는데 다른 식당에서 파는 것보다는 배 부를 정도로 컸지만 맛은다른 곳에서 파는 것보다는 못했습니다 (다른 식당 평을 보세요). 이 식당은 식사보다 크로상이 더 평이 좋았기에 식사 후 네 종류의 크로상을 샀습니다 (하나에 1블 99전). 사과 크로상은 다 팔려 못샀습니다. 크로상은 정말 맛 있습니다. 너무 달지도 않으면서 버터 맛과 조화를 이루었습니다. 다른 평들은 초코렛 크로상이 제일 평이 좋았지만 저희들 의견으론 아무 것도 안 넣은 크로상이 제일 맛 있었습니다. 초코렛은 두번째이었구요 (그것도 제 입에는 코코넛 크로상 (하나에 2불 75전) 이 두번째이지만). 이 집에 들릴 기회가 있으면 또 다시 (아니면 매번) 갈 예정입니다.

주로 사 가지고 가는 주문 식당인지 실내 장식은 거의 전무이지만 주차는 문제가 없습니다. 단 이 식당에 가실려면 꼭 기억 할게 있습니다. 이 식당은 현금만 받습니다. 수표, 카드 다 안 받습니다.

I was searching a place to eat after a meeting in St Paul and found that Trung Nam Bakery had a good review.

I had a Bahn Mi for the lunch and it was larger than ones I had at other places, but it was not as good as others (refer to other reviews). But it was filling. Since Trung Nam Bakery is better known for their croissant, I bought four different kind of croissants ($1.99 each). Unfortunately, apple croissant was sold out. They are really  really good. It has just enough sweetness to balance the butter. Even though chocolate croissant is most popular, we liked the plain croissant most followed by chocolate croissant (my personal second choice is the coconut croissant ($2.75 each), but it isn't the favorite item among my friends). I will be visiting again whenever I am in the neighborhood.

Do not look for the interior decor since it is more of take out place, but parking is not a problem. Please REMEMBER that it is CASH only shop. No check and card.

회의 떄문에 며칠 동안 이간(Eagan)에 다녀야 하기에 이 지역에서 먹을 만한 곳을 찾아 보았습니다. 오늘은 평이 좋은 브리아노 델리에 들리기로 하였습니다. 이 식당은 수퍼 아메리카 주유소 뒤에 숨겨져 있어 바로 눈 앞에 있기 전까지는 모를 것입니다.

Since I have to be in Eagan area for few days for the meeting, I did a search for the restaurants in the area.  With good reviews, I decided to try Bruanno's Deli. It is tucked behind the Super America gas station. You won't see it until you are right in front of it.

브리아노 스페셜 (6불 25전/반 쪽)을 주문헸는데 평처럼 맛이 있는 것은 아니더군요. 그러나 빵은 평보다 맛 있었습니다. 두번째 들린 날은 매운 시카고식 쇠고기 구이 (Roast Beef) (6불 95)를 주문했습니다. 학교 다닐 때 먹던 샌드위치와 비슷했지만 맛은 근처도 못가네요. 양파와 고추를 함께한 이탈리안 소세지나 이 식당에서 유명한 앏은 크러스트 피자를 먹어 보려 한 번 더 들릴런지는 모르겠습니다.

I have ordered Brianno's Special ($6.25/half). It wasn't as good as other reviews, but the bread was better than some reviews. On my second visit, I ordered Chicago Style Roast Beef ($6.95). It looked similar to the sandwich I used to eat while attending school, but the taste wasn't even close. I am not sure if I will try again to taste Italian Sausage with Onion and Peppers or their better known thin crust pizza. I will write the review after I try them.

밖에 테이블 두개와 의자들이 있긴 하지만 그 이외에는 먹을 곳이 없고 전부 테이크 아웃 주문이더군요. 피자는 완전히 구운 것, 반만 구운 것 또는 집에서 굽는 것으로 주문할 수가 있습니다. 또한 치즈를 비롯해 이탈리안 식품들을 구입할 수 있습니다.

There are only two tables and chairs outside and most of their business is to go. Pizza can be ordered take n bake, half baked or fully cooked. Or you may want to try their Italian grocery items including cheese.

이 식당이 좋은 평들을 받았지만이  바베큐 닭 집에 기대를 할 수 있는지 자신이 없었습니다. 워낙 제일 잘한다는 바베큐 집이 워낙 많으니요. 그러다 이 식당 근처에서 사업상 회의가 있어 테이크 아웃을 할 생각으로 들렸습니다. 닭고기 8개 (12불 8전), 감자 튀김 (2불 79전/일인분) 과 콜슬로 (2불 79전/작은 것) 를 주문했습니다. 저희들 주문이 나왔을 때 따뜻할 때 먹어 보는 것이 제대로 맛을 볼 수 있을 것 같아 식당에서 몇 점 먹어 보았습니다.  처음엔 몇 점 먹어 보고 나머지는 싸가지고 갈 예정이었습니다. 그러나 앉은 자리에서 몽땅 먹고 말았네요. 대부분의 닭 튀김은 껍질이나 반죽에만 양념이 배는데 이 루스터 집 닭은 고기 속까지 양념이 밴 것이 무척 맛 있었습니다. 이 집 닭고기가 먹어 본 것 중 제일 맛있었습니다. 감자 튀김은 양은 많았지만 맛은 별로였습니다. 크리임한 콜슬로를 좋아하는 저희들에게 이 집 콜술로는 아니 올씨다 입니다.
 
Even though the restaurant received the good reviews, we weren't quite sure what to expect for the BBQed chicken. There are so many BBQ chicken places which suppose to be the best. Anyway, we had a chance for the take-out after a business meeting near-by. We ordered the 8 piece chicken ($12.08), French Fries ($2.79/single) and Cole Slaw ($2.79/1/2 pint). When our order came out, we figured that it is best to try them when it is hot and tried few pieces at the restaurant. We initially intended to try few and take home the rest, but we ended up eating the whole chicken. Most of fried chickens have the seasoned skin or batter, but the chicken at Rooster's has the meat itself seasoned.The chicken was THE BEST among we have tasted. French Fries potion was large, but was nothing special. Cole Slaw could be more creamy for our like.

두번째 들렸을 때는 해덕 (8불37전)과 양념 닭 날개 (테운 낡개) (9불30전/12개)을 주문했습니다. 튀긴 생선은 꽤 맛 있었는데 양이 너무 적은 듯 합니다. 저는 자마이칸 저크 소스나 맵지 않은 버펄로 소스와 먹은 닭 날개는 그저그저 했지만 친구는 좋아했습니다.

On our second visit, we tried Haddock Dinner ($8.37) and Marinated Wings (blackened wings) ($9.30/doz). The fried fish was really good, but it could use more pieces for the price. The wings with Jamaican Jerk and/or mild buffalo sauce was OK for me, but a friend liked them.

식당에서 식사를 하실 예정이면 식사 떄에 가사지 마세요. 식당 안에 테이블이 3개 박에 없습니다. 대부분의 주문이 테이크 아웃이더군요. 저희가 들렸을 때는 거리에 주차가 힘들진 않았습니다.If you plan to eat at the restaurant, try it off hours since there are only 3 tables. Most of their business were take-out. The street parking was easy for the days we visited.

Lawn Care 3 - Weed & Grass Killer (잔디 관리 3 - 잡초와 잔디 죽이는 약)

집주변에 장식돌을 깔아 놓아도 잡초와 잔디가 무성해 지네요.여러 가지 약들을 써 보았지만 별로 효과가 없었는데 마지막으로 잡초와 잔디를 다 죽인다는 약을 사용해 보기로 했습니다.

엘리미네이터 (Eliminator) 라는 상표의 잡초와 잔디 죽이는 약 (Weed & Grass Killer)을 물과 섞어 사용한 후 변화되는 과정을 사진으로 올립니다.

Even though we had the decorated rocks around the house, the weed started to grow and the grass propagated into the rock area. We have tried number of different weed killers, but it was just temporary solution. Finally we tried a strong weed and grass killer.

We tried the weed & Grass Killer from Eliminator. We applied it after mixing it with the water and the picture show the progress.

약 사용 전/Before Applying 

약을 사용한 후 일주일이 지난 후. 잡초들이 죽기 시작하네요. One week after the weed killer was applied. The weeds started to wither.

일주일 후/One Week

약을 사용한 후 이주일이 지난 후. 잡초들이 거의 다 죽었네요. Two weeks after the weed killer was applied. The weeds were almost gone.

이주일 후/Two Weeks

한가지 조심할 것은 이 약이 굉장히 독해 비가 와도 잔디 쪽으로 흐르지 않게 방어책을 해 놓으신 후 사용하십시오.
Warning: makes sure that the weed killer does not spread into the grass area even if it rains. The weed killer is so strong that it kills the grass even after few weeks.

그런데 일년이 지나자 잡초들이 다시 나기 시작하네요. 근본적으로 조각돌 사이의 홁을 씻어내기 전에는 매년 약을 사용할 수 밖에 없을 것 같네요.
However, the weed did come back after one year. It looks like we need to apply the weed killer every year unless I redo the decorated rocks after cleaning them.

Driving Cross Country Epilogue (미국 대륙횡단 후기)

버지니아에서 켈리포니아까지의 미국 대륙횡단을 끝내고 (Epilogue for crossing country from Virginia to California)

일반정보 (General Information):

* 다니면서 얼마간의 계획이 중요합니다. 특히 아무 것도 없는 곳에서 휘발유가 떨어지는 일이 없도록 주의하세요. 고속도로 출구마다 정유소가 있는 것이 아니니깐요.
* 운전하다 한시간마다 한번씩 5분 내지 10분 쉬어가세요. 차타고 있는 모두 사람이 내려 다리 뻗기 등으로 다리에 쥐가 나는 것 등을 막으세요.
* 여행 중에 하이키을 할 예저이던가 걷는 것이 많을 경우 마실 물을 충붙히 가지고 다니세요. 특히 여름에 여행할 예정이면.

* Plan ahead and watch your gas so you don't get caught with "out of gas" in the middle of no where. Not every highway exit has the gas station.
* Stop every hour or so and walk around for 5  to 10 minutes to prevent cramping, etc for not only driver, but also everybody in the car.
* If you are traveling during the summer and plan to hiking or walking, bring a lot of water with you.

음식/식사 (Meals/Foods)

* 여행하면서 마시는 물과 끓이지 않은 움식들을 조심하세요. 채소들도 같은 물로 씻는다는 것을 기억하세요. 저희는 다니면서 큰 식료품점에서 물을 구입했고 그것이 경비도 절약됐습니다.
* 식료품점에 들렸은 때 몇가지 더 준비할 것이 있습니다. 과일, 간식, 점심 만들 고기와 빵, 그리고 쥬스등을 준비하세요.
* 시간을 아끼기위해 아침은 호텔에서, 점심은 패스트 후드에서 해결했지만 저녁은 식당에서 맛있고 푸짐하게 먹었습니다. 식당은 분위기나 서비스 보다도 음식 맛이 좋다는 곳을 찾았습니다. 언제 또 다시 올 것이라고요.

* Be careful with drinking waters or uncooked food because vegetables are washed with the same water. We bought the bottled water at the large grocery store and it is a lot cheaper.
* While in grocery, pick up some fruits, munchies, lunch meat (with bread), and juice.
* Tried to take of breakfast at the hotel and fast food for lunch to save the time, but had a good meal for the dinner at the restaurant. We tried to choose the restaurant with good reviews of food. The ambient was the secondary since we figure this would be our only visit.

숙소 (Hotel/Motel)

* 여행하면서 하루 밤만 묵고 갈 곳이기에 깨끗하고 참대가 편하다는 호텔들을 찾았습니다. 여러 인터넷 사이트들을 찾아 비교하고 골랐습니다.
* 몆 군데는 모텔 8과 계약을 하고 떠났지만 비교적 가격이 싼 이 연쇄점을 잘 고른 것인지 걱정이 되었습니다. 그러나 대부분은 뜻밖으로 좋았습니다. 미국 남쪽 지역 모텔 8 체인점들이 북쪽 지역이 있는 체인점에 비해 훨씬 좋았습니다.
* 예약하기전에 필한 것들이 무엇인지 그리고 그것들이 방에 설치 또는 준비되어 있는지 확인하십시오. 어떤 모텔들은 대부분 다 있는 샴푸도 없는 곳이 있습니다.

* Since we were looking for a place only to sleep, we searched a place with clean room and comfortable bed. We searched number of internet sites to compare the places.
*Even though we made the reservations at Motel 8 at the number of cities, we weren't quite sure what to expect from these low cost chains. But it was a pleasant surprises. Most of Motel 8 in southern states were better than that of northern states. We will use most of them again.
* Check what is available in the hotel room depending on your needs. You may get caught with some surprises. Some motels don't even provide shampoo/conditioner.


또 한 번 간다면 들리고 싶은 곳 (Must place to visit If we do it again)

개인적인 차이가 많겠지만 저희들은 당연히 죽음의 계곡 (Death Valley) 입니다. 사진으로도 자연의 색갈을 잡을 수 없이 정말 자연의 신비함을 맛 볼 수 있던 곳이었습니다. The choice will be depend on the individual preference, but Death Valley is our choice. This was the place where we were able to experience the mysteries of nature. Even the camera could not capture the true color of nature.

이것이 인연이라고하나요. 쾡 (Quang)에서 저녁을 먹던 중 길 건너에 걸려 있는 마이 황 부엌 (My Huong Kitchen) 선전물을 보고 식당평을 찾아보니 꽤 좋아 다음엔 저 집을 들려야겠다 생각했습니다. Our relationship with My Huong Kitchen started strangely. While we were having a dinner at Quang one day, we saw the advertisement for My Huong Kitchen across the street from Quang. We told ourselves that we have to try My Huong Kitchen next time we are in the area since it had better review than Quang.

아침과 오후 회의 중간에 점심을 간단히 먹기 위해 친구와 이곳에 들려 테이크 아웃을 하기로 하였습니다. 여러 접시를 맛보기 위해 스프링 롤 (3불 50전), Bun Cha Cio (에그롤 살라드) (6불 50전), 그리고 후식으로 딸기 크레이프 (4불 95전)를 주문했습니다.

Since we only had a little time between two meetings, we decide to order the takeout at My Huong Kitchen. To taste several dishes, we ordered the Spring Roll ($3.50), Bun Cha Cio (egg roll salad) ($6.50) and Strawberry French Crepes ($4.95) for a dessert.

새우 스프링 롤은 속을 꽉꽉 눌러 쌌기 때문에 다른 곳에 비해 양도 많고 맛 또한 아주 좋았습니다. 디핑 소스는 약간 달콤하면서도 향끗한 맛이 있는 것이 기호에 따라 없이 먹어도 괜찮습니다. 스프링 롤은 두번째 먹어도 맛있게 먹었고 단연 추천합니다. 에그롤 살라드는 테이크아웃 접시에 먹으려니 잘 섞이지 않아지만 그래도 중간 이상 입니다. 딸기 크레이프는 운전하고 가면서 먹었기에 식어서인지 생각보다 못했습니다. 

Shrimp Spring roll was so packed with the stuffing that it could be a meal itself. It was real good and delicious. The dipping sauce was a little sweet and savory taste and you may also eat them without the sauce. We have tried the Spring Roll twice and we definitely recommend. We could not toss Egg Roll Salad well in the takeout plate, but it still was better than average. I am not a fan of French Crepe, but the Strawberry Crepe was not what we expected. It could be that the crepe was too cold by the time we ate them while driving.

식당에서 먹을 기회가 있는 오늘은 양이 얼마나되나 실험하기로 하였습니다. 이번 실험 대상으로 닭 볶움 밥 (6불 50전) 과 에그 롤과 돼지 갈비살로 만든 국수 살라드 (6블 95전)를 주문했습니다. 볶은 밥은 다른 접시들에 비해 맛이 특이했지만 저희들은 맛있게 먹었습니다. 국수 살라드와 나온 에그 롤 소스는 다른 식당에 비해 맛이 있는데 국수 살라드 자체는 별로였습니다. 음식 값은 다른 곳에 비해 약간 싼 편이었지만 그만큼 양도 좀 적은 편이더군요. 혹시나 해서 밤에 간식으로 먹을 예정으로 고기완자 (meat ball) 샌드위치를 주문해 왔는데 약간 단 맛이 있으면 괜찮기는 하지만 저희들은 쾡 식당의 구운 돼지고기 샌드위치를 먹으렵니다.

When we had a chance to dine in, we wanted to test the quantity of dishes with taste. We ordered Hai-nam Chicken Rice ($6.50) and Bun Thit Nuong & Cha Gio (Egg roll & pork chop noodle salad) ($6.95). Rice dish was different, but it was quite tasty and we enjoyed. Other restaurants have better noodle salad even though the source for the egg roll was tastier than other places. The price of dishes are slightly lower than other Vietnamese restaurants, but the quantity was less than other places. Just in case we get hungry at night, we ordered Meat Ball sandwich ($3.95). It has slightly sweet taste and we think we will stick with the roast pork sandwich from Quang.

버블 차 (3불 50전)는 소문대로 생과일로 만들어 다른 식당에 비해 월등 좋았는데 떡을 새로 만들었다고 하는데 저희들에게는 약간 더 딱딱하든군요. 맹고 버블 차는 맛 있게 마셨는데 파인애플 버블 차는 생각치 보다 못했습니다. 그래도 추천합니다.

Bubble Tea being made with the real fruits was excellent. The owner told us that they made the fresh boba, but they were a little more chewy than we liked. Mango Tea was excellent, but Pineapple Tea was flat and uninspiring. Still, we recommend their bubble tea.

혹 이 식당에 들릴 예정이면 이 식당이 꽤 작다는 것을 알고 계세요. 식탁들이 다 해 6개이니 식사 시간 떄 들린다면 아마 문제가 되지 않을까합니다. 또한 메뉴는 다른 식당에 비해 적은 편입니다. 아마 이것이 장점일런지도 모르지만.

One thing you should consider if you plan to stop by is that this place is very small. They have only 6 tables and it could be a long wait during the mealtime. Also, the menu is limited compared to other restaurants. It may be for their advantage.
