Canada Banff Trip (케나다 벤프 여행) Day 2 Montana (둘째날 몬태나)

위바우슷, 몬태나 (Wibaux, Montana)에서 코우츠, 캐나다 (Coutts, Canada)까지

두째날은 몬태나주 글렌다이브(Glendive, Montana)에 있는 공룡 동상을 보고 서클(Circle, Montana)로 갈 예정입니다. 공롱 동상은 세상에서 제일 큰 동상들을 본 후라서 그런지 너무 실망 스러웠습니다.

시골 빵집은 어떨까하여 서클(Circle, Montana) 에 있는  Kuchen Kottage 를 찾아 나섰습니다. 그런데 상점 앞이 가게 같이 차려 있지않고 사무실 건물같이 되어있어 찾는데 시간이 좀 결렸습니다. Kuchen Kottage는 전직 간호원이 운영하는 테이블이 2개 밖에 없는 작은 상점었습니다. 많지 않은  아침, 점심 메뉴에 장식품, 선물용품들을 파는 아주 작은 가게이지만 음식은 직접 만들기에 꽤 맛있었습니다. 또한 본적이 없는 잼들을 팔기에 혹시나 해서 하나식 사 왔는데 집에와 먹어 보니 꽤 맛있는 것이 배달이 되면 더 주문을 해볼까 합니다.

아침을 먹으면서 주인 아주머니와 이런 저런 이야기를 나누다 저희들이 계획하지 않은 길에 경치 좋은 호수가 있다고하고 시간도 비슷하게 걸릴 것이라고하여 계획을 바꿔 들려 보기로 하였습니다. 계획을 바꿔 들린 포트 펙 호수 (Lake Fort Peck) 는 정말 아름답고 넓은 것이 꼭 바다 같았습니다. 배수로로 나오는 물살은 시속 65 마일 정도로 빠르다고 합니다. 모르고 지났으면 꽤나 후회했을 정도입니다.

호수에 아름다운에 빠져 많은 시간을 보내는 바람에 일정이 늦어졌습니다. 몬태나 주 하이워에 24 번 도로는 거의 차량 통행이 없어 속도를 내고 싶은 유혹이 생길 수도 있지만 고속 도로 2번에 들어 서서는 제한 속도에 조심하십시오. 속도위반 감시소가 안보이는 여러 곳에 설치 되어있습니다. 몬태나 광야를 지르는 운전은 단조롭고 따분해 질 수 있겠지만 저희들에게는 정말 조용하고 평화로운 경험이었습니다. 단지 하나 신기한 것은 곳 곳에 공룡등 동물 조각들이 널려져 있는 것 이었습니다. 아마 이것은 땅의 유산에서 비롯 된 것이 아닐까 합니다.

2번 도로에서 서쪽으로 가는 중 몬태나 주 사코 (Saco, Montana) 에 있는 교실 하나인 학교 (One-room school)에 잠시 들렸습니다. 이 학교는 NBC 저녁 뉴스로 유명해진 쳍 헌틀리 (Chet Huntly)가 다닌 학교입니다. 박물관으로 복원된 옛 대초원 지역의 교실 하나인 학교는 마을 동쪽 끝 2번 도로 북쪽에 있습니다.

점심으로는 몰타(Malta, Montana) 에 있는 웨스트사이드 카페 (Westside Cafe)에 들려 샐러드바를 먹었습니다. 샐러드바에 있는 음식 종류들은 다른 곳에서도 볼 수있는 것과 다른 것이 없었지만 제료들이 싱싱했고 굉장히 맛이 있었습니다. 저희가 언제고 이곳을 다시 지난다면 꼭 다시 들릴 것입니다.

너무 늦게 몬태나 아브르 (Havre, Montana) 에 도착하여 아브르 지하 도시 (Havre Underground City)와 버펄로 함정(Buffalo Jump)을 구경할 기회를 놓쳤습니다. 두 곳이 오후 2시, 3시면 벌써 문을 닫네요 (아마 방문객어 없어 더 일찍 닫지 않았나 싶지만). 이 지하 도시의 유래는 마을이 전부 불에 탄 후 주민들이 주거지를 지하실로 옮긴 후 굴을 이용해 피난처들을 연결하였다고 합니다. 마을이 복원된 후에는 철도회사에서 고용한 동양인들 "안전"을 위해 사용하였다고 합니다.

홀리데이 마을 쇼핑 센터(Holiday Village shopping center) 뒤에 있는 버펄로 함정은 아주 옛날에 인디언들이 버펄로를 이 함정으로 몰아 넣었다고 합니다. 그리곤 껍질을 베껴 사용하고 고기들을 말려두고 먹었다고 합니다. 버펄로 함정과 근처의 아씨네본 요새 (Fort Assinneboine)의 유물들은 홀리데이 마을 쇼핑 센터 안에 있는 얼 클락 박물관 (H. Earl Clack Museum)에 저장되어 있습니다.

모텔에 도착하기 전에 저녁을 먹으러 인터넷 평도 좋고하여 몬태나 주 쉘비(Shelby, Montana)에 있는 중국집 홍콩 첸 (Hong Kong Chan)에 들렸습니다. 아마 몬태나 기준으론 괜찮은 식당인지는 몰라도 맛도 별로 였고 가격은 큰 도시 가격 이었습니다. 그냥 양식점을 찾는 것이 무난하지 않을까 합니다.

해기 지고서야 세관에서 큰 문제 없이 캐나다 국경을 지났습니다. 머물 곳은 세관에서 얼마 떨어져 있지 않은 코우츠(Coutts)에 있는 더불 츄리 인(Double Tree Inn) 이었습니다. 방은 깨끗했으나 변소는 방에 비해 아주 아주 작었고 목욕통 없이 샤워만 있습니다. 오늘 운전한 거리는 480 마일 이었습니다. 아무 것도 없이 끝도 없이 펼쳐진 광야를 지나가야 할 것을 걱정한 것은 하나의 기우였습니다.

From Wibaux, Montana to Coutts, Canada

On the morning of day 2, we are headed to Circle, Montana with a quick stop at a dinosaur statue at Glendive, Montana. This statue was a disappointing after seeing world's largest monuments.

Since it was out plan to try as much as we can, we were headed to Kuchen Kottage Bakery in Circle, Montana. We drove up and down the street several times before we found the store because the front of building is more like to the entrance of office building rather than the usual store front. Kuchen Kottage is owned by the retired nurse and is two table store. Even though it has the limited menu for breakfast and lunch and sells decorations and presents, the home made food were good. We bought the home made Sandcherry (grown only this region) Jam and it is very good. We are planning to order additional jams if they could ship.

While we were having the breakfast, we had the small talks with the owner and she suggested a route through a lake. Since it would not be much of additional time, we decided to take her recommendation. Lake Fort Peck was a big lake like ocean and beautiful. The water speed of spillway from the dam could reach 65 miles an hour. We were very glad that we took the recommendation.

Because we spent too much time at the lake with its beauty, we were a little behind the schedule. The country road (State 24) in Montana had almost no traffic and you may tempt to drive fast, but don't tempt while driving highway 2 (speed traps). The driving through Montana prairie could be monotonous and boring, it was very quite and peaceful experience for us. One interesting thing was that we saw quite a few dinosaur and other animal statues along the roadside. I guess it is from the heritage of their land.

Heading west on highway 2, we stopped at the one-room school house at Saco, Montana which Chet Huntly of NBC Evening News fame attended. The Great Plains school room which is reconstructed as a museum is on the north side of highway 2 at the eastern edge of town.

We stopped at Westside Cafe for lunch in Malta, Montana and we decide to try their salad bar. The salad bar had the similar items you would find at other places, but the ingredients were fresh and very tasty. We would stop again if we pass through the area.

When we arrived at Havre, Montana, it was too late to take the Havre underground tour and visit Wahkpa Chu'gn buffalo jump.They close by 2 PM or 3 PM (maybe closed earlier without visitors). The story of underground city is that when one fire took out the entire town, the residents moved into the basements as temporary shelters. A series of tunnel was then dug to connect them. After the town was rebuilt, the underground city was used to house Asian railroad workers for their "safety".

The buffalo jump is located behind the Holiday Village Shopping Center and was used to drive the bison over the cliff by Native Americans. Afterwards, they skinned the animals and preserved the meat. The artifacts from the buffalo kill and nearby Fort Assinneboine are displayed in H. Earl Clack museum which is also located in Holiday Village shopping center.

We decided to have a dinner before we cross the border and stopped at Hong Kong Chan in Shelby, Montana. The restaurant had some favorable reviews on the Internet. It may be good enough for a small town in Montana, it was not a good Chinese food, especially at the large city price. It may be better looking for a good hamburger place.

By the time we arrived at the border, the sun was set and there wasn't much traffic at the custom. We had a reservation at Double Tree Inn few hundred yards from the custom. The room was very clean, but the bathroom is real real tiny without the bathtub. The distance we drove today was 480 miles. My apprehension of driving through miles and miles of prairie land was unfounded.

미네아폴리스, 미네소타 (Minneapolis, Minnesota)에서 노스 다코타 (North Dakota)를 거쳐 위바우슷, 몬태나 (Wibaux, Montana)까지

노스 다코타 주 화고 (Fargo, North Dakota)는 몆 번 들린 적이 있어 이번에는 미네소타주에서는 쉬지 않고 화고에 있는 로조 메리스 (한 시즌에 61개 홈런 기록을 세운유명한 양키 외야수) 박물관 (Roger Maris Museum)을 첫 방문지로 정했습니다. 방문 전에는 다른 박물관처럼 넓은 공간을 생각했는데 이 박물관은 웨스트 에어커 쇼핑몰 (West Acre Shopping Mall)에 상점 진열장같이 되어 있고 한 쪽 끝에 양키 구장에 있던 의자들이 있는 비데오 방이 있습니다. 메리스가 박물관을 만든다면 모든 사람이 볼 수 있고 입장료 없이 만들어야 한다는 조건이 있어 이렇게 지었다고 합니다. 잠시 들려 점신이나 간식을 하며 쉬면서 잠간 들리기에 좋은 곳입니다. 몰 안에 있는 후드 코트에 있는 Rising Bread 에서 화고 치즈스텍 ($8.99 combo) 을 먹어 보세요.

다음 목적지는 화고에서 90 마일 서쪽에있는 제임스 타운입니다. 이곳에는 세상에서 제일 큰 버펄로 동상과 서부 개척 시대의 이발관, 교회, 감옥, 학교 등이 있는 후론티어 마을이 세워져 있습니다. 이곳에 들리면 잡화점에서 아이스크림을 꼭 드세요. 맛도 있고 가격(두 스쿠프에 2불25전) 도 저렴합니다. 이 지역 자원자들이 운영하는 화랑에서는 제임스 타운 대학에 계시는 교수를 만나 미술과 교육에 관하여 의견을 나누며 뜻박의 즐거운 시간을 가졌습니다. 또한 제임스 타운 대학이 한국 하남 대학과 자매 결연을 맺고 있다는 소식을 들었습니다.

버펄로 동상을 구경하고 떠나는데 푹우가 오기 시작하여 다음 예정지들을 그냥 지나가야만하나 생각했습니다. 그러나 차로 두 시간 거리에 있는 뉴 살렘 근처에 오자 언제 그랬느냐 듯이 비가 끝였습니다. 덕분에 비 맞지 않고 살렘 슈라는 세상에서 제일 큰 소 동상 사진을 찍을 수 있었습니다.

고속 도로 휴게소를 들렸는데 옛날 주유소 같이 아담하네요. 참 기억해 두실 것은 대부분 고속도로 출구 근처에는 주유소들이 있는데 노스 다코타는 출구마다 주유소가 있지 않으니 다음 큰 도시까지 갈 수 있는 차 기름이 충분한가 항상 살피십시오.

다음에 들릴 장소는 괜히 바쁜데 시간만 소비하는 것이 아닌가 좀 걱정이 되었습니다. 세상에서 제일 큰 쇠 조각들은 고속 도로 94번에서 리전트(Regent)로 가는 32 마일 엔친티드 도로 (Enchanted Highway) 옆에 세워져 있습니다. 조각들은 1989년 까지는 그림을 그려 본적도 없고 용접도 해본 적이 없는 게리 그레후 (Gary Greff) 라는 예술가가 디자인하고 세웠다고 합니다. 이 조각들을 본 것은 기대 이상 큰 수확이었는데 어두워지기 시작해 7조각 중에서 4 조각만 보게 된것이 아쉬웠습니다. 또한 메뚜기 떼들이 자동차 앞 창문을 자기들의 무덤으로 만들어 운전하기가 어려워 졌기 때문이기도 합니다.

605 마일을 달리는 이번 여행 중 제일 오래 운전하는 하루였지만 날씨도 좋고 즐거운 여행 이었습니다. 또한 중간 중간 들리면서 가니 그렇게 오래 운전한 것 같지도 않았습니다. 또한 몬태나까지 가는 덕분에 한시간을 벌었습니다 (타임 시간대) 첫날 밤은 몬태나 주 위바우슷(Wibaux)에 있는 비버 크릿 모텔 (Beever Creek Inn) 잤습니다. 오래되고 작은 모텔이었지만 방은 깨끗하였고 침대도 편안 했습니다. 그러나 아침 식사는 시리얼과 토스트 뿐이니 기대하지 마십시오. 혹시 이곳에서 쉬실 것이면 인터넷 지도에 나오는 모텔 장소는 모두 틀리니 믿지 마십시오.

From Minneapolis, Minnesota to Wibaux, Montana via North Dakota

Since we traveled to Fargo, North Dakota few times before, we made Roger Maris (a great Yankee outfielder who broke Babe Ruth's single season home run record) Museum at Fargo as our first stop zipping through Minnesota. We expected the museum as a large hall with artifacts, but it was the glass enclosed display along one of hall ways in the West Acres Shopping Center with a small video room at one end. The condition Maris set for the museum was that it has to be in a place where people will see it without paying for it. We recommend for a quick stop at the museum and have lunch or snack in the mall. The Fargo Cheese Steak ($8.99, combo) at Rising Bread in food court was very good.

Our next stop is Frontier Village with Bison Monument in Jamestown, North Dakota. which is about 90 minute drive west of Fargo. The world largest concrete bison is at the end of Frontier Village which is collection of old pioneer buildings including a barbershop, a church, a jail house and one room school house and many more. You must try the ice cream at the general store which is real good and very reasonable price ($2.25/2 scoop). At the art gallery which is run by volunteer Dakota artist, we have met a professor from James Town College. We had a good time unexpectledy discussing the art and education and found that James Town College is a sister university of Ha Nam University of Korea.

As we left James Town, it started to raining hard and we thought we may have to skip next stops. But, as we were near New Salem after about two hours from James Town, North Dakota, the rain stopped and we were able to take the picture of Salem Sue, the world's largest holstein cow under the sunny sky.

The rest area in North Dakota is built like old gas station. It is kind of cute. By the way, one thing to remember is that there is usually a gas station or two around the highway exit in other states, but that is not so in North Dakota. Please check that you have enough gas to reach next large city.

We weren't sure what to expect on our next stop and worried that we may wasting a valuable time. The world's largest metal sculptures are spread out along the 32 miles of the Enchanted Highway off interstate 94 toward Regent, North Dakota. The sculptures are designed and erected by Gary Greff who had never done any art work or welding prior to 1989. They were worth of the trip even though we could only see 4 of 7 sculptures before the sun went down. Another reason was that the windshield on our car became the cemetery of grasshoppers and it made difficult to drive.

The first day was a trip of 605 miles, the longest drive of the entire trip, but it was very enjoyable with beautiful weather and it did not seem that long of drive with stops along the way. Also, we gained one hour getting to Montana (Mountain time). Our first place to sleep was Beaver Creek Inn in Wibaux, Montana. It was an old motel, but the room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the price was right. Don't expect much for the continental breakfast. It was serial and toast. Warning if you plan to stay at this motel; all on-line map sites show the motel in the wrong location.

Canada Banff Trip (케나다/캐나다 벤프 여행) Day 0 (준비날)

"케나다"가 맞는 표기인지 "캐나다"가 맞는 표기인지 모르겠습니다만 케나다로 표기하겠습니다.
미네소타 (Minnesota)에서 출발하여 케나다 벤프 (Canada Banff)를 방문할 예정으로  몆 가지 방법을 찾아 보았습니다. 하나는 케나다 켈거리 (Calgary)로 비행기로 간 다음 차를 빌려 구경을 하거나 여행사를 사용하는 것입니다. 둘째는 시애틀/벤쿠버(Seattle/Vancouver)을 들려 그곳에서 여행사에서 준비한 여행 상품을 사용하는 것입니다. 마지막 방법은 모든 여정을 차로 여행하는 것입니다.

차로 여행하는 것은 긴 여행이 되겠지만 이번 기회가 아니면 또 다시 다코다 (Dakota) 주들을 구경할 기회가 없을 것 같아 이번에는 차로 여행하기로 결정을 하였습니다. 지도에서 보듯이 약 5,000 마일 거리가 될 것 같네요

노스 다코타(North Dakota)를 동에서 서로 가로 지르는 길은 두가지 가 있습니다. 하나는 인터스테이트 후리웨이 94번이고  또  하나는 좀 더 북쪽인 하이웨이 2번으로 가는 길입니다. 여러 가지를 찾아 보니 2번 도로는 별로 볼거리도 없이 끝도 없는 넓은 광야를 지나는 것이라기에 94번 도로로 가면서 중간에 쉬면서 갈 곳을 찾기로 하였습니다. 그리고 돌아 오느 길에 몬타나에 있는 글레시어 공원과 사우스 다코타(South Dakota)에 있는 불렉 힐(Black Hills) 지역을 돌아 보기로 일정을 잡았습니다. 마지막으로 미네소타 남서 쪽에 있는 파이프스톤(Pipestone) 공원을 들리기로 하였습니다. 전부 12일에 걸친 자동차 여행이 되겠습니다.

62세 이상 미국 시민권자에게 드리는 팁입니다. 미국내에 있는 국립공원을 방문 할 예정이면 떠나기 전에 노인권을 10불에 구입하십시오. 이 노인권은 모든 국립 공원 입장이 평생동안 무료입니다. 차로 입장하시면 한 차에 탄 승객 모두(4명까지)가 무료입니다. 단 이 노인권으로 주립공원에서는 무료 입장이 안됩니다.

We have studied several options for visiting Banff, Canada starting from Minnesota. One is to fly into Calgary, Canada and rent a car for sightseeing Banff (or use one of trip packages). Second option is to fly to Seattle and use a trip package by travel agency. The last option was to drive by a car from Minnesota to Banff.

Even though it could be a long trip by a car, we decided on the third option since we may not have another chance to see Dakotas. As you could see from the map, it could be about 5,000 mile drive.

There are two main highways to cross North Dakota from east to west, one is interstate highway 94 and the other is more northern route using highway 2. We decide on the interstate highway 94 with stops along the way since the route 2 is crossing a flat prairie land without much to sightseeing. On the return trip from Banff, we planned to visit Glacier National Park in Montana, and Black Hills area in South Dakota. The last major stop will be Pipestone National Park in the southwestern Minnesota. The trip will be a 12 day trip by car.

One travel tip for those who are older than 62 and US citizen. If you are planing to visit the national parks in USA, purchase a senior pass for $10. It will allow you free pass for a life time at any national park including passengers (up to 3) in your car. But it won't give you free pass at the state parks.

Spring at Macy's Flower Show (메이시 백화점 꽃 전시회에서 봄을)

2012년 메이시 백화점 봄 꽃 전시회 (Macy's Flower Show)가 3월 25일 부터 4월 7일까지 미네아폴리스에서 열렸습니다. 올해도 바크만 (Bachman) 꽃집과 함께 브라질을 주제로 한 전시회를  열었습니다. 미네아폴리스 메이시 전시회가 뉴욕, 시카고, 필라델피아, 샌프란시스코와 다른 것은 환경 조절이 된 한 층에 모든 꽃들이 전시되어 있는 것입니다. 다른 메이시 백화점들은  상품 전시장에 꽃들이 전시되어 있습니다.

2012 Macy's Flower Show was held at 8th floor of downtown Macy's from 3/25 to 4/7. In partnership with Bachman's, this year's theme was Brazsil. What differentiates Minneapolis flower show from other Macy's (New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco) is that the flowers were displayed in the climate controlled auditorium rather than squeezed on the sales floor between the merchandise.

전부터 이 식당의 음식이 맛있다는 평들을 많이 보았지만 종업원들이 불친절하다는 평들이 많아 이때까지 주저하고 있었습니다. 그러다 저녁을 무엇을 먹을까 식구들이 전화로 상의하던 중 서로 시간들도 맞지가 않아 이 김에 QFanatic애서 사가지고 가 집에서 먹기로 결론이 났습니다.

양이 많을 것이라고 생각은 했지만 먹어 보기 위해 Q Picnic Sample (4인분용)을 주문했습니다. 이 샘플은 돼지 갈비 (Pork spare rib), 잘게 찢은 군 돼지고기 (Smoked pulled pork), 잘게 찢은 군 소 가슴고기 (Smoked beef brisket), 잘게 찢은 닭고기 (Pulled smoked chicken), 4 가지 반찬 (side dishes), 4 가지 소스가 나옵니다.  반찬으로 메크로니 치즈 (Mac & Cheese)는 괜찮은 편이고요, 쿨슬로 (coleslaw) 는 아주 아니 었습니다. 소스와 먹는 쐐기골 감자 튀김 (potato wedge)은 따뜻할 때 먹으면 꽤나 맛 있을 것 같읍니다.  고기들은 말 듣던 대로 맛있었습니다. 식당에서 먹으면 따로 양념(condiments)이 있는지는 모르겠지만 사 가지고 온 것에는 다른 양념은 없었습니다. 그리고 고기 소스는 Espresso BBQ, Chipotle BBQ 와 Asian Ginger Teriyaki 를 주문했는데 식당 잘못으로 Asian Ginger Teriyaki 는 오지 않았습니다. Espresso BBQ 와  Chipotle BBQ 소스는 거진 비슷했지만 소스 맛이 괜찮았습니다. 또한 함께 온 양파와 마늘빵은 이제까지 식당에서 먹어본 빵 중 제일 맛있었습니다.

식당안에 들어가 보지는 않았지만 금요일 저녁이어서인지 빈자리가 없는 듯하였습니다. 또한 작은 상가에 있어 바쁜 시간에는 주차도 문제가 될 수도 있겠습니다. 다음 번에는 식당에서 먹어보자고 의견이 모아졌습니다.

We have heard good reviews on the food of QFanatic, but we were hesitating to visit the place because of bad reviews on their service. We hate to ruin our dining-out experience on bad service. On this night, because we could not meet at the same time, we decide to try the take-out. It will provide a chance to taste the food without worrying about bad service.

We expected it will be too much food for our family, but we decide to order Q Picnic Sampler (feed 4 hungry people by menu) since we could taste 4 different meats. The sampler includes Pork spare rib, Smoked pulled pork, Smoked beef brisket, Pulled smoked boneless chicken, 4 side dishes, and 4 sauces. For sides, Mac & cheese was better than average, but coleslaw was not something to recommend. Potato wedge with chipotle sour cream might be good if we did work them up. The meat are tender and very tasty as we have heard. No condiments came with the order, but we don't know if they are available if you dine in. Some people might prefer the condiments when you eat the sandwich. We asked for Espresso BBQ, Chipotle BBQ and Asian Ginger Teriyaki sauce, but Asian Ginger Teriyaki sauce was missing. Espresso BBQ and Chipotle BBQ sauce were similar, but both were good. The garlic onion roll was excellent ( I usually don't eat the roll, but I ate two of them).

I didn't go into the dining area, but it seemed there was no empty table. Maybe because it was Friday evening... The restaurant is at the end of small mall and the parking could be a problem if it is busy. We all agreed to try the dine-in next time.
