Never say never - Lesson by Kaffir Lily (절대로는 없다 - 군자란 꽃을 보면서)

저희 집에 오는 화분들은 항상 일회성 이었습니다. 저희 집에 올 때 피워있던 꽃들이 지고나면 다시는 꽃이 피질 않는다는 것이지요. 많은 사람들이 가르쳐 주는 여러 방법들을 시도해 보았지만 모두 실패로 끝났지요. 그러다 어느 날 저녁 놀랍게도 이 꽃이 뽀시시 잎 사이에서 선을 보였습니다. 이쁘지요!!! 너무 신나서 친구들에게도 전자 메일로 보냈지요. 저희 집에서는 절대 안 될 것 같더니 정말 "절대"는 없는가 봅니다.


All flower pots coming to our house became one time deal. Once the flowers wither, we never see the flowers again. We have tried everything people told us, but none worked. But, one evening, I noticed this little flower sticking out it's neck among the leaves. It is so beautiful, isn't it? It was so joyful moment and I had to share it with friends. I thought it will never happen in our house, but I learned "never say never".

몇년을 계속 몇 봉오리가 피더니 놀랍게도 올해는 꽃봉오리 수가 많아졌네요. 제가 생각해도 신기하네요.

Few buds were blossoming every year, but the number of buds were a lot more this year. It is just amazing.

새 중국 부페 식당이 가까운 곳에 생겼다는 광고를 보고 오늘 들려 보았습니다.

새 식당인지라 식당은 깨끗하였고 하나의 큰 홀이아니고 간막이들이 있어 좀 더 아늑한 분위기 였습니다. 음식은 특출한 것이 없이 중간 정도입니다. 그릴도 히바치도 아니고 몽고리안 바베큐도 아닌 어중간하였고 스시도 웬만한 중국 식당 보다는 괜찮았지만 스시를 더 잘하는 중국 부페도 있습니다. 다른 음식들은 몆가지는 괜찮았지만 몆가지는 못 먹을 정도 였으나 한 두 번 더 가 볼 예정입니다. 후식으로 나오는 케잌은 소프트한 것이 맛있었고 과일들도 신선하였습니다. 광고는 멕시칸, 이탈리안 음식도 있다고 하였지만 기대는 마십시오. 피자도 이탈리안이니까...

We stopped at the new Chinese buffet today because we had a coupon.

The restaurant is clean since it opened recently and it is cosy than other places since the hall is divided into sections instead of one large hall. The food was average more than one way. The grill is not really hibachi grill, but it is not really Mongolian BBQ either. It is some where in between. The sushi is similar. It is a lot better than other Chinese buffet, but then there are other Chinese buffet places with better sushi. Some of other dishes are good enough, but some other dishes are below average. But we all likes the cake and fruits are fresh. Overall, we plan to try few more times. The restaurant advertises that it has Mexican and Italian foods, but don't expect too much. You know the pizza is considered as Italian....

Minnesota Restaurant (미네소타 식당) - Pappy's Cafe (American)

동네 신문에서 이 식당 아침이 맛있다는 평을 보았지만 아직 들러보지는 않았습니다. 아침 먹으러 식당을 가는 편도 아니고 동네 신문평을 믿는 편도 아니었기 때문이었습니다. 그러다 오늘 1시간 30 분 떨어져 있는 도시에서 점심 때 약속이 있어 브런치를 먹어 볼 겸 들렸습니다.

저는 파피 아침특식 ($4.99)을 친구는 겨란 베네딕트 ($7.29)를 주문했습니다. 겨란은 약간 너무 익혔지만 베이컨은 제대로 구웠습니다. 저를 놀라게 한 것은 함께 나온 펜케이크 였습니다. 얼마나 큰지 펜케이크 하나가 큰 접시를 전부 덮을 만큼 커습니다. 겨우 한개를 먹을 수 있었습니다. 그러나 약간 단단하게 구워진 펜케이크를 좋아하는 저에게는 약간 너무 부풀어지게 구워졌습니다. 겨란 베네딕트에 사용한 소스는 다른 곳에서 먹어본 것과 달랐는데 꽤 맛있었습니다. 오늘 주문 한 것 중 실망을 시킨 것은 오렌지 쥬스였습니다. 3블 29전인데 꼭 오렌지 가루를 사용하여 만든 둣 했습니다. 전체적으로 음식은 괜찮은 편이라 다시 한번 들려 목요일 특별 메뉴인 무한정 주는 돼지 갈비 요리 ($9.99)를 먹어 볼 예정입니다.

목요일 저녁이 늦어져 어딜갈까 고민하다 페피의 목요일 특별 메뉴가 생각나 찾아 갔습니다. 돼지 갈비 요리는 양은 풍부했으나 고기가 약간 마른 편이었습니다. 그러나 소스와 함께하면 훨씬 맛있습니다. 갈비 요리에 소스를 더 주문한 것은 아마 이것이 처음이 아닌가 합니다. 구은 닭 요리는 보기에 꽤 말라 보이지만 고기는 먹기에 알맞았습니다. 껍질 몆 부분은 좀 짠 편이었습니다.

식당은 깨끗했고 특히 놀란 것은 변소가 왠만한 호텔만큼 께끗했습니다.

The local paper mentioned this place as a good place to eat the breakfast, but I have not tried until now since I don't usually go to the restaurant for the breakfast and was somewhat skeptical about the reviews. But, I decide to try Pappy's Cafe today since I needed a brunch before going to a Noon meeting in the city about 1 and 1/2 hour away.

I had Pappy's breakfast special ($4.99) and my friend had a egg benedict with hash browns($7.29). My order of over easy egg was a little over cooked, but the bacon was crispy. But the surprise was the pancake. Each of two pancakes is huge enough to cover a large plate and I barely finished one. The pancakes is a little fluffy and i wished it is a little firm. The source used on the egg benedict was different than I had at other places, but it was good. The disappointment was the orange juice at $3.29 (large size). It tasted like a juice made from the powder. Overall, the food is better than average and we are planning to go back and try the Thursday dinner special; all you can eat pork ribs ($9.99).

We were debating where to go for the dinner on Thursday and decided to try Thursday special at Pappy's. For the rib dish, the meat was a little dry, but it was better with the source. This is the only rib dish which we asked for the extra source. The chicken dinner looks dry outside, but the meat is moist even though some part of skin is a little salty.

The dining room is clean and I was impressed with cleanness of the bath room.

다음에 들렸을 때 매운 자마이칸 (Spicy Jamaican, $7.49/대, $5.49/소))을 먹어 보았습니다. 약간 매운 맛이 있었지만 저희들 중 몇 명은 로스트 비후보다 더 맛이 있다고 생각합니다.

On the following visits, we have tried Spicy Jamaican ($7.49/ lg, $5.49/sm). It is a little spicy, but some of us actually liked it more than the roast beef.

작년 성탄절에 아직 가보지 않은 식당을 찾고 있었는데 그 지역 분들의 평이 많은 매브릭 식당을 우연히 알게 되었습니다. 성탄절날 자원봉사도 일찍 끝났고 마침 그 지역이라 매브릭을 가보도록 하였습니다. 식당은 작은 상가 중간에 있는데 찾기에 힘들었습니다. 왜냐고요? 밖의 광고판에 전기가 나가 밤에는 길에서 간판이 보이질 않으니깐요. 그 후 몇 번 떠 들렀었지만 그 간판의 불은 아직도 꺼져있습니다. 실내 장식은 그저 동네 식당 정도이지만 무척 깨끗합니다.

저희가 처음 들린 날은 하나 사면 하나 공짜인 특별 세일이 있다고 하는데 이것을 주문할 것인지 고민 이었습니다. 괜히 샀다가 맛이 없으면 남은 음식을 어떻게 하나 하는 걱정이 앞섰으니깐요. 그러나 성탄절 기분으로 용기를 내어 특별 세일을 주문했습니다. 샌드윗치를 먹으면서 우리가 괜한 걱정을 하였다는 것을 알았습니다. 로스트 비후 샌드윗치는 저희가 이제 까지 먹어본 로스트 비후 샌드윗치 중에서 제일 맛 있었습니다. 이 샌드윗치를 먹어분 후에는 다른 즉석식당 (Fast food) 로스트 비후 샌드윗치를 먹기가 힘들으실 것입니다. 양념들은 종류는 많지 않지만 음식 맛을 돋구기에는 부족함이 없을 것입니다. 감자 튀김(French Fries, $2.49)은 미리 튀겨 놓는 것이 아니고 주문을 받은 후에 튀기기 때문에 항상 따끈 따끈한 것을 먹을 수가 있습니다. 이제 우리는 단골이 되었습니다.

We were searching for a different place to try around last Christmas time and came across Maverick which seems like a local favorite. Since we finished our volunteer work early, we decided to try the Maverick since were near by. It is in the middle of a strip mall, but you may miss it if you try to find it at night since the lights in the outside sign are out. We have eaten number of time since, but the lights are still out. The interior is like  a regular neighborhood place, but it is clean.

On our first visit, they had a 2 for 1 special; order one and get one free. We weren't quite sure if we wanted the special or not. It could be total waste if we don't like the good. However, we decided to try with Christmas spirit. We ended up with two beef sandwiches and two brisket sandwiches. We were not disappointed. Roast Beef sandwich and Brisket sandwich were one of the best sandwiches we had. You will have a difficult time eating the fast food roast beef sandwich after you taste Maverick's. The condiments and sources are available next to the drink machine. It has limited variety, but it is enough to satisfy your taste bud. You will also get a hot fries ($2.49) since it is fried after you order it. since our first visit, we became a regular customer.

이발을 하다보니 배가 출출해져 미용사와 먹을거리를 이야기하던 중 추천 받은 곳입니다.  미용실에서 한 불럭 정도 떨어져 있는 곳이지요. 저녁 5시 이후에는 식당 양쪽으로 파킹을 할 수 있는데 (한쪽은 치과의사 사무실임) 저희가 간 날은 자리가 없어 길거리에하여햐 했습니다. 그러나 큰 눈이 온 후라 (미네소타 12월 대설) 길거리 파킹이 좀 힘들었습니다. 예약이 되는지 모르지만 식사 때에는 기다리는 손님들도 많았으니 참고 하시기 바랍니다.


새우, 게, 돼지고기가 들은 egg noodle soup과 돼지 고기를 잘게 썰은 것, 돼지고기와 게를 섞은 전이 밥과 함께 나오는 접시를 시켰습니다. 돼지고기 접시는 고기가 약간 달콤한 맛이 있지만 매우 맛있게 먹었습니다. 양도 적당한 편이었구요. 그러나 egg noodle soup은 국물이 우리 입에는 너무 달었습니다.


저희 미용사가 추천한 샌드위치를 먹어보려고 주문을 하였더니 다 팔렸다고하여 실망을 하였습니다. 그러나 식사 중에 종업원이 오더니 소고기 샌드위치가 두 개 있는데 원하느냐하여 싸가지고 왔습니다. 약 4불에 점심으로 먹기에는 맛도 꽤 괜찮은 샌드위치 입니다. 그 후에 점심에 들러 돼지고기 샌드위치와 혼합(Combo) 샌드위치를 먹었는데 돼지고기가 소고기 보다 더 맛 있습니다. 또 한가지, 샌드위치는 메뉴에 없고 계산대에서 사실 수 있습니다.

먹어본 접시들 (Dishes we tried):

Bun Bo Hue - 메뉴에는 양념이 쎄다고하는데 맵지는 않습니다. 그런데 먹으면서 국물이 좀 느끼하다고 느껴지든군요. 또 주문할 것 같지는 않군요. Menu indicates it is spicy dish, but it is more flavorful than hot. The soup leaves fatty after taste in your mouth. Not likely try it again.

Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio - 맛이 개운하고 맛있습니다. The dish has the refreshing taste and it was liked by friend.

Com Thap Cam - 좋아하는 접시 입니다. It is one of favorite dishes.

Weekend Special - 주말에만 있는 접시들인데 이름이 기억나질 않네요. 맛 있게 먹었는데. I can not remember the name of the dish which is available only on weekend, but it was really good.

We were talking about the places to eat while our family were getting hair cut. Our hair dresser recommended Quang which is a block away. The main parking lot only has few spots, but the parking lot in the dental office next to the restaurant is available after 5 PM. Both parking lot were full when we went and it was tricky to park in the street since it was after big snow storm (Minnesota December Snow storm). I don't think they take a reservation and it could be 20 - 30 minute waiting during the peak time.


We tried egg noodle soup with shrimp, crab and pork and the rice dish with pork slice, chopped pork and pancake with pork and crab meat. The pork dish is a little sweet, but it is very delicious. The amount was just right for me. The noodle soup is a little too much sweet for our tastes.


For takeout, We ordered the sandwich our hair dresser recommended, but we were told that they were sold out. But, our server told us few minutes later that we could get two beef sandwiches if we still wanted. We ate the sandwich for the lunch next day. They were more than worthwhile for $4. We have tried the grilled pork sandwich and combo few days later and the pork sandwich is better than beef sandwich. The sandwiches are not in the menu, but posted next to the counter and order them at the counter.

Leaking Toilet (변기 물새는 문제)

Things you need to purchase (구입할 물건) : Fluidmaster (Home Depot)

변기 물탱크 안에 있는 물 채우는 발브가 작동을 제대로 못하면 물이 계속 나오기 때문에 넘치는 물이 계속 변기로 흘러 나가게 됩니다. 심하면 눈에 보일 정도로 계속 흐릅니다.

이 때 먼저 해볼 수 있는 것은 물탱크 안에 있는 공의 높이를 조절하는 것입니다. 조절 방법은 발브 꼭대기에 있는 나사를 죄는 것입니다. 이것으로 물 흐르는 것이 멈추면 당신은 성공하셨습니다.축하합니다

그러나 발브를 조절하여도 계속 물이 흐른다면 아마 발브 전체를 바꾸셔야 합니다. 이렇게 되면 일이 커지는 구나 전문 수리공을 불러야 하시겠지만 (저도 그랬으니깐요) 염려하시지 마십시오. 먼저 Home Depot 가셔서 Fluidmaster에서 나오는 발브를 구입하신 후 설명서에 따라 발브를 바꾸시면 됩니다. 설명서가 잘 되어 있으나 한가지 혼동 되는 것은 유출관 튜브 연결입니다. 저의 것은 함께 온 부속품을 사용하지 않고 튜브를 발브에서 유출관으로 연결할 수 있었습니다만 변기 종류에 따라 다를 것 같읍니다. 그것은 여러분의 숙제입니다. 세상에 공짜는 없는 것 같읍니다. 그러나 7불과 여러분의 시간 30 분으로 훌륭한 수리공이 되었습니다.

When there is a problem with the fill valve in the flush tank, you will hear the water running constantly. If it is bad, you can see water continuously flowing into the toilet.

The first thing you may want to try is adjusting the fill valve.  This is located inside the tank, so you'll have to remove the tank lid to access it.  Then, turn the screw on the top of refill valve to adjust the tank ball.   This minor adjustment can stop the running water.  If so, congratulations!! You did it!!! 

But if it does not stop the running water, it might be time to replace the refill valve. It may scare you because it seems like a big job in need of a your local plumber's attention, but don't worry.  Simply go to Home Depot (or your local hardware store) and purchase a Fill Valve (mine was from Fluidmaster) and follow the instructions.  Even though I did not have to use any additional parts that came with the new valve, you may have to use them depending on the type of toilet you have. That is your homework (nothing is completely free!) But with just about 7 dollars and 30 minutes of your time, you'll feel like a real handyman (or woman!)

친지와 이 식당에서 만나기로한 후 인터넷을 찾아보니 별로 후기가 좋지 않아 좀 망성열습니다. 가격이 싼 집도 아닌데 기분까지 망치면 어떻게하나 걱정하였거든요.

함께간 모두들 부페를 하기로하고 새우 스프링 롤, 교자, 사시미, 9번 롤, 새우튀김으로 시작하였습니다. 스시는 밥을 너무 많이 넣는다고하여 주문하지 않았습니다. 사시미는 미네소타임을 감안하면 (바다와 멀리 떨어져 있음) 보통 정도이나 (얼린 맛이 있으니)  새우 스프링 롤과 교자는 보통 이상이고 9번 롤과 새우 튀김은 맛 있었습니다. 버섯 스테이크는 약간 짠 편이었으나 양파 스테이크는 기대 이상이었습니다. 마지막으로 국물이 먹고 싶어 우동을 주문하였는데 우동은 실망치이고 후식으로 그린티 아이스크림과 생강 아이스크림을 먹었는데 별로 였습니다. 그렇다고 다른 선택이 있는 것은 아니고요. 25불에 손해 받다는 생각은 안들어 한 번더 갈 예정입니다.

실내 분위기는 괜찮은 편이고 조용하였습니다. 주중이어서 그랬는지  종업원들도 인터넷에 있는 것과 같이 무래하지도 않았고 음식도 주문 후 오래 기다리지 않고 나왔습니다. 아마 함께 가신 분들이 단골로 종업원과 안면이 있는 것이 도움이 되었을 수도 있지만..

원칙은 먼저 주문한 것을 다 먹은 후에 다음 음식을 주문할 수 있고 주문한 음식을 다 먹지 않으면 15% 가산된다고 합니다. 저희는 아주 꼐끗이 접시를 비워 이에 해당이 되지 않았습니다.

Even though we had made an appointment to meet our relatives at Kami, I had some reservations on going to Kami after reading mediocre reviews on the Internet. One thing this household hates is having a terrible experience with food since it is the one thing this household collectively loves.

Since everybody at the table agreed to have All You Can Eat (otherwise each person has to order a la carte), we started with the shrimp spring roll, gyoza, No 9 roll, a sashimi variety (standards salmon, tuna, etc.) and shrimp tempura. Considering that this is Minnesota (aka land void of fresh seafood), it's no surprise that the sashimi tasted like something frozen/thawed.  The spring rolls and gyoza, however, were above average.   The standouts were the No 9 roll and shrimp tempura, so we ordered several additional plates of those.   We also got the steak with onion (better than expected) while the steak with mushroom was a little salty for our taste. Since we wanted to finish the dinner with something soup based, we ordered the combination udong based on the server's recommendation. The noodles were ok, but the soup had a sweet taste to it which is odd for an Asian soup.  We also tried the green tea ice cream and ginseng ice cream for dessert, but here again, not the greatest.  If you like green tea ice cream, you're better off sticking with Haagen Daaz brand.

The ambiance is above average and the room is quiet enough to have a conversation without raising one's voice. The service was good (reasonable wait for food) and we did not experience any rudeness from the employees as with other reviewers. Maybe being there on a weekday helped. Or the more likely scenario of our relatives knowing the servers, and thus the better service, is the reason for the better service.  Overall, it was not bad for $25/pp AYCE and we may try it again, but once again, this is Minnesota.

FYI:  There is a rule that you can only order more food after you finish what you have already ordered.  In addition, there is a 15% surcharge if you do not finish what you ordered.
