Canada Banff Trip (케나다 벤프 여행) Day 4 Morning: Jasper National Park (네째날 아침: 제스퍼 국립공원)

제스퍼 국립공원(Jasper National Park) - 행잉 계곡 (Hanging Valley), 말린 협곡 (Maligne Canyon), 메디신 호수 (Medicine Lake), 말린 호수 (Maligene Lake) 

케나다 록키 (Canada Rockies)의 제스퍼 국립공원(Jasper National Park)을 구경하는 첫날 아침 식사는 소프트 롹 카페 (Soft Rock Cafe)에서 하기로 하였습니다. 카페 이름이 말하듯이 아름답게 악기들로 벽을 장식하고 있습니다. 아침으로 크롸산 샌드위치(croissant sandwich, 크로산을 너무 태웠군요), 소프트 롹 오믈렛(soft rock omelette, 맛은 별로고 감자튀김은 너무 드라이했고), 후렌치 토스트와 과일(french toast with fruit, 괜찮음), 훈제연어 오믈렛(smoked salmon omelette, 오믈렛은 맛 있었으데 감자 튀김은 너무 드라이했음)를 주문했는데 가격은 $10 - 15 (케나다 달러) 정도 입니다. 전체적으로 한번은 들려 볼만하지만 다음에 기회가 있다면 다른 식당을 찾아 볼 것입니다. 한가지 낮선 관행은 (캐나다에서도 이 지역에만 있는 관행인지 모르지만) 웨이터들이 서브도 안하면서 계산대에서 신용카드로 음식값을 지불할 때 팁을 꼭 내야만 청산이 되는 것입니다.

제스퍼 국립공원에서 첫번째 구경거리는 말린 호수 길(Maligne Lake Road)에 있는 현곡 (Hanging Valley) 입니다. 현곡은 고속도로 16번에서 말린 호수 길로 들어선 후 4 마일 지점에 왼족으로 입구가 있습니다. 현곡이라 불리우게 된 것은 더 큰 아사바스카 빙하 (Athabasca Glacier)가 그 보다 작은 말린 빙하 (Maligne Glaciler)보다 100 미터나 더 깊게 계곡을 파서 아사바스카 계곡 위에 매달려 있기에 Hanging 계곡이라 합니다. 현곡 전망대에서 내려다 본 계곡인데 앞의 산이 햇빚에 따라 다른 색갈을 보이네요.

현곡을 떠나 말린 호수 길을 따라 2 마일을 가면 왼쪽으로 말린 협곡(Maligne Canyon)으로 들어가는 길이 있습니다. 말린 협곡은 말린 빙하가 녹으면서 흘러 넘치는 물이 두 계곡 사이를 침식하여 협곡이 생긴 것인데 이 지역의 석회석이 다른 암석보다 빨리 침식되어 케나다 록키에서 제일 깊은 협곡이 생겼다고 합니다. 주차장에서 등산로를 따라 내려가면 그 유명한 첫번째 다리가 나옵니다. 여기서 내려더 보는 협곡의 깊이는 38 미터 입니다.

등산로를 따라 내려가 두번째 다리에서 보이는 협곡은 깊이가 51 미터로 케나다 록키 협곡 중 제일 깊다고 합니다.

세번째 다리에 오면 폭포 중의 하나를 볼 수 있고 멋 있는 사진을 찍을 기회가 있습니다. 대부분의 방문객들이 세번째 다리에서 되돌아 가는데 조금 더 내려가면 협곡이 넓어지면서 시원한 강물 소리를 들으며 메디슨 호수 물이 흘러 나오는 동굴을 볼 수 있습니다.

말림 협곡에 있는 난간들이 있는 것은 이유가 있는 것이니 난간을 넘어 가지 마십시오. 더 가까이 협곡을 보려거나 시진을 찍으려다 사상자 명단의 한사람이 되지 마시기 바랍니다.

여름 동안은 빙하 녹은 물이 메디슨 호수를 가득 채웁니다. 그러나 빙하가 녹지 않는 가을과 겨울 동안은 호수 물이 사라져 버립니다. 그래서 메디슨 호수가 "마법"의 호수 또는 "사라지는" 호수라고 불리어지기도 합니다. 호수에는 눈에 뛰는 배수 시설이 없지만 호수물은 지하 동굴 망을 통하여 배수 된다고 합니다.

공원 길을 가다 만나는 재미있는 풍경은  길 양옆으로 주차되어 있는 차들의 행렬입니다. 무슨 일인가 하고 차를 세웠더니 사슴 촬영에 모두들 여념이 없었습니다.

말린 호수가 생기게 된 연유는 주변 언덕에 난 산사태가 밑의 계곡으로 흘러 자연 댐이 생기면서 물이 고여 생겼다고 합니다. 이 호수는 세상에서 두번째로 큰 빙하 호수이고 케나다 록키에서 가장 아름다운 곳 중의 하나입니다. 또한 호수의 물 색갈과 호수에서 보이는 세 빙하로도 유명하고요. 그러나 저희들은 구름이 끼어 좋은 기회를 놓쳤습니다.

벤프/제스퍼 공원을 방문 하실 때 한가지는 꼭 기억하실 것은 이 지역이 꽤나 고산지대 (1000 m/3500 ft 이상)로 날씨 변화가 심 할 수 있다는 것 입니다. 맑은 하늘 아래 제스퍼를 떠났는데 말린 호수에 도착하니 어느덧 구름이 꽉 끼었네요. 특히 산행을 계획 하시는 방문객들은 꼭 명심하십시오.

For the breakfast on the first day of sightseeing the Jasper National Park in Canadian Rockies, we tried Soft Rock Cafe. The interior of cafe was decorated with the musical instruments as the name of cafe indicated. We ordered the croissant sandwich (croissant was a little burnt), Soft Rock Omelette (was less than expected and potatoes were dry), French Toast with Fruit (was average), and Smoked Salmon Omelette (was good, but potatoes were dry) and the prices were $10 - 15 ($ Canada). Even if it was interesting place to visit, we would try another place if we visit the area again. One unusual practice (we don't know if it is limited in Jasper/Banff area) was that you could only complete the card transaction if you include the tip even though you are not served by servers.

Our first stop at the Jasper National Park was the Hanging Valley whose entrance is at 4 miles mark on Maligne Lake Road from Highway 16. When the larger Athabasca glacier carved its valley some 100 m deeper than the smaller Maligne glacier, it was left hanging above Athabasca Valley. And it is called the Hanging Valley. You can see the panorama view of Athabasca Valley from the Hanging Valley viewpoint and the mountain across the valley changing the color as the sun was in and out of cloud.

At the 2 mile mark from Hanging Valley on Maligne Lake Road, there is the entrance to Maligne Canyon on the left. The Maligne Canyon was created by the runoff from the glacier melt which rapidly eroded the limestone of the valley. The soft rock eroded faster than other rocks which resulted in the deepest canyon in Canadian Rockies. If you follow the trail from the parking lot, you will come across the "famous" first bridge.  The depth of canyon below the first bridge is 38 m (125 ft).

At the second bridge along the trail, the depth of canyon is 51 m (167 ft) which makes it the deepest canyon in Canadian Rockies.

At the third bridge, it is from here that one of the most easily seen water falls is located. This spot also provides perfect photo opportunities. Most visitors turn around at third bridge, but, if you follow the trail to ward forth bridge, the roar of water can be heard as the canyon widens and you will see a cave where the water from Medicine Lake flows into the canyon.

Warning: Please do not cross the guard rails at the Maligne Canyon for the close look or picture opportunities unless you want to add your name to the long list of people who have perished.

During the summer, glacier melt waters flood the Medicine Lake, but the lake disappears in fall and winter. That is the reason why the Medicine Lake is sometimes called "Magical" Lake or "Vanishing" Lake. Even though there is no visible drainage, the water drains out through a hidden drainage network of underground caves.

We came across some interesting scenes along Maligne Lake Road where cars are parked with engine running on both sides of the road. So we decided to check it out. The reason was that people were occupied with taking the pictures of animals like the elk.

Maligne Lake was created when a landslides off surrounding hills into the lower valley created a natural dam for the water to backup. It is the second largest glacier lake in the world and one of the most picturesque spot in the Canadian Rockies. It is famed for the color of its water and three glaciers visible from the lake. We have missed the opportunity with low cloud deck.

When you visit Banff/Jasper area, you should keep in mind that the weather could change abruptly since the altitude of area is higher than 1000 m (3500 ft), especially if you plan to take the hiking trail. It was sunny and bright when we left Jasper, but it was suddenly cloudy and threaten a rain when we arrived at Maligne Lake.

If the car tire can speak (자동차 타이어가 말을 한다면)

자동차 타이어가 어떻게 닳는가를 알고 있으면 타이어를 오래 쓸 수 있고 차의 전체적 성능을 향상 시킬 수 있습니다.  또한 그저 간단한 정비면 되는지 아니면 앞 바퀴 정열이 필요한지를 알 수 있습니다.
Learning to interpret the tire wear, you may be able to extend the life of tire and improve your car's performance. Also, it may show you if you need simple tire maintenance or a front-end alignment.

상태: 이물질이 트레드를 짜르든가 구멍을 낸 상태. 이 경우 타이어의 바람이 빠지든가 타이어가 손상 될 수 있음.

해결책: 믿을 수 있는 정비소에서 손상 된 곳을 안전하게 고칠 수 있으면 고치십시오.

상태: 급브레이크로 브레이크가 잠겼을 Brake lockup) 때 부분적으로 트레드가 손상되거나 긇혀질 수있음. 손상 상태는 얼마만큼 쎄게 급브리에크를 했나, 도로 표면과 상태에 따라 다름. 심한 경우 타이어의 스틸 벨트까지 손상될 수 있음.

해결책: 가능한한 급브레이크 하는 것을 피할 것.


상태: 한쪽 숄더가 닳는 상태. 타이어가 고르게 닳지 않으면 다른 부속품들이 빨리 닳들가 정열이 안된 (misalignment) 상태가 될 수 있음. 이 상태가 계속되면 타이어를 오래 사용 못하던가 다른 쪽 타이어를 손상할 수 있음.

해결책: 기계 고장이나 서스펜션 문제가 있나 점검할 것.

무게가 바깥 쪽 타이어에 쏠리게 됨. 그러면 숄더가
빨리 닳아 타이어를 오래 쓰지 못함.

해결책: 자동차 회사가 권고하는 타이어 압력을 유지할 것.



상태: 타이어 바람이 너무 많이 들어가 타이어 중앙이 닳은 상태. 트레드 중앙이 튀어 나와 차의 무게가 중앙에 모두 쏠려 정상보다 빨리 닳음.

해결책: 자동차 회사가 권고하는 타이어 압력을 유지할 것.

          

       

Condition: Tread cut or puncture caused when a foreign object penetrates the tread area. It can lead to air loss and possible destruction.

Solution: If a puncture is repairable, repair the damage if it is recommended limit.

Condition: Localized tread damage and unusual abrasion can occur during brake lockup (meaning that the brake is pressed hard enough to stop the wheel rotating). The extend of damage may depend on the severity of the brake lockup, the road surface or other conditions. If it is severe, the damage can extend into the steel belts.

Solution: When possible, avoid severe braking situations.

 Condition: Shoulder wear on one side. Worn parts or misalignment may result in uneven wear. This condition will reduce the tire life and may lead to other tire damage.

Solution: Inspect the car for possible mechanical or suspension problems that should be repaired.

Condition: Shoulder wear on both sides occurs when the tire is under-inflated and the outer shoulders are forced to carry the majority of the weight. It will lead to excessive shoulder wear and reduce tire life.

Solution: Maintain the car's recommended inflation level and use rims in good condition.

Condition: Center tread wear can be caused by over-inflation. The center of tread will bulge outward, forcing it to carry most of the weight and wear our prematurely.

Solution: Maintain the car's recommended inflation level.

케나다 코우츠 (Coutts, Canada) 에서 벤프 (Banff)룰 지나 제스퍼 (Jasper, Canada) 까지

밤새 비가 와서인지 오늘 아침은 쌀쌀하지만 상쾌하게 하루를 시작할 수 있겠습니다. 오늘 일정은 캘거리 공황에서 친구들을 만나 함께 벤프를 지나 제스퍼까지 가서 쉴 예정입니다.  넓혀져 있는 광야가 몬태나가 계속되는 것 같은 분위기인데 다른 것은 고속 도로에 차들이 많다는 것이네요.

한가지 재미 있는 것은 첫번째 들린 휴게소에 있는 공롱 동상 이었습니다. 몬태나 주나 알버타 주나 둘다 공룡으로 관광객들을 부르는 모양입니다.

12시에 캘거리 공항에서 친구들을 만나기로하여 쉬지 않고 달리는데 고속 도로 부근에 보이는 노오란 카놀라 필드가 꽤 인상적이었습니다.

공항에서 친구들을 만난 후 캘거리에 있는 홰스트 푸드점 (fastfood)에서 점심을 간단히 때우고 시내를 빠져 나오는데 88년 동계 올림픽 때 사용한 스키 점프장 앞을 지났네요.

아무리 가는 길이 바빠도 벤프는 보고 가야하기에 고속 도로 1번에서 서쪽으로 주행하다 벤푸 출구로 빠져 왼쪽으로 돌면 밴프로가고 오른쪽으로 돌면 노퀘이산 (Mt Norquay) 으로 오르는 길입니다. 노퀘이산을 중간쯤 오르면 뿌리들이 이상한 나무들이 있는 전망대가 나오는데 밴프가 한눈에 들어 옵니다. 하늘이 잔뜩 흐린 것이 좀 아쉽기는 했지만 그래도 시내 전경이 아름답군요. 오른쪽에 있는 버밀리언(Vermilion Lake) 호수는 석양 때 경치가 좋다고 하는데 기회가 없었습니다. 정상에 가보니 아무도 없고 설치물들이 겨울에 스키장으로 사용되는 모양입니다.
참고로 벤프 공원 입장표는 고원 입구 도착 전 Dead Man's Flat이라는 마을에 있는 허스키 (Husky) 주유소에서 사세요. 공원 입구에서 살려면 기다리는 시간이 장난이 아닐 수 있습니다.

"돌아오지 않는 강" 영화로도 유명한 보우 강 (Bow River)에서 한 장 찍고 아이스 필드 파크웨이 (Icefield Parkway)에 들어서니 소문 듣던대로 아름다운 여행 길 이었습니다. 앞에 펼쳐지는 산들이 빛에 따라 다른 색갈로 변하는 것이 무척 장엄하고 웅장스러웠습니다. 그리곤 운전 중 계속 흐렸다 개였다 하던 날씨가 제스퍼에 도착하니 무지개가 피면서 날씨가 개었습니다.

오늘 묵을 호텔은 말린 호텔 (Maligne Lodge) 입니다. 방은 꽤 큰 편이었고 깨끗하였습니다. 한가지 알아 두셔야 할 것은 북쪽에 있는 방들이 안 마당에서 보면 일층인데 뒷 길에서는 지하라 창문이 없는 방일 수 도 있습니다. 며칠을 운전을 하였더니 매운 것이 당겨 저녁은 시내에 있는 김치 하우스(Kimchi House)에서 한식으로 했습니다. 저희들이 먹어본 돌섬 비빔밥, 된장 찌게, 오징어 볶음들은 가격이 좀 비싼 편이지만 한식이 먹고 싶으면 들릴만 합니다. 그런데 식당 이름과는 달리 김치는 주문을 해야 한다고 하네요. 또 한가지 기억해 두실 것은 특별한 전자품 (예를 들면아이 폰(Iphone)) 부대용품이 필요하시면 큰 도시에서 구입하십시오. 벤프에서 제스퍼까지는 4 시간 운전 거리이지만 우리가 오늘 달린 거리는 코오츠로 부터 497 마일 이었습니다.

From Coutts, AB Canada to Jasper via Banff

After overnight rain, a chill was in the air, but we felt we could be having a refresh start. Out iternery for today's trip is to pick up our friends at Calgary airport and drive to Jasper, Canada via Banff where we had a hotel reservation. The rolling prairie of Alberta seems to be the continuation of Montana, except that there were more traffic on the highway. 
It was kind of funny to see a dinosaur statue at the first rest area from the border. Both Montana and Alberta  are using the dinosaur heritage to entice the travelers

Since we suppose to pick up our friends at the Calgary airport at Noon, we drove through Alberta without taking many breaks, but the canola fields near the highway were an impressive scene.

After a quick lunch with friends at the fast food place in Calgary, we have passed the ski jump used during the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Even though we still had few hours to drive, we must stop and see Banff. After exiting at Banff from the west bound Trans-Canada Highway 1, it will be Banff on the left and Mr Norquay scenic drive on the right. About half way up the mountain, there is a lookout where the roots of some of trees are above the ground and which provides an amazing panoramic view of Banff with Vermilion Lakes on the right. We did not have the time to visit Vermilion Lakes during the sunset, but it suppose to be real beauty. The road continues up to the Ski Norquay parking lot. It was a little disappointing with the cloudy sky, it had its own beauty.
Tip: Purchase the park pass at the Husky gas station in Dead Man's Flat. The wait to buy the pass at the park entrance could be very long time.

Vermilion Lakes

After a quick stop for the photo-opp near Bow River which is famous with "River of No Return" movie, the changing view depending the light along the Icefields Parkway is both grand and magnificent as they say. While, during our drive to Jasper, the weather was mostly cloudy with some sun, the rainbow welcomed us under the sunny sky when we arrived at Jasper.

The hotel we had a reservation was the Maligne Lodge at the western end of town. The rooms were large and very clean. But the layout of hotel is somewhat strange such that the rooms on the north side is two stories from the inside courtyard, but it is a single story from the street. It means the rooms on the first floor could be rooms without windows. After 3 days of driving, we were looking for some spicy food and decode to try some Korean food at Kimchi House. We have tried Hot Pot blbim-bob, Doenjang Stew and Stir-fried Squid. They were average, but over priced (maybe it is a price of tourist spot). Another odd thing was that you have to order for Kimchi even though the name of house is Kimchi restaurant. And one warning- if you forgot accessories for your iPnone etc, buy it before you get to the park. There are electronic stores in town (even in Banff), but they don't stock special(?) items. It takes about 4 hours by car to Jasper from Banff, but we have droven 497 miles today from Coutts.
