모뉴멘트 벨리를 떠나 다음에 들린 곳이 아리조나 국도 98번 가에 있는 엔틸롭 캐년 입니다. 아리조나 페이지 에서 동쪽으로 6.5 Km 떨어진 곳입니다. (After leaving Monument Valley, our next stop is Antelope Canyon off AZ 98. It is 4 miles east from Page, AZ.)

아주 적은 양의 비가 와도 이 곳은 워낙 좁아 순식간에 물이 차 올라 온다고 합니다. 오래 전에 홍수로 인명 피해가 있은 후 나바호 인디안 가이드 하에서만 관광이 가능합니다. 가이드와 함께 상 엔틸롭 캐년 (Upper Antelope Canyon)과 하 엔틸롭 캐년 (Lower Antelope Canyon) 관광이 가능합니다. 두 캐년을 구경한 관람객 대부분이 둘 중에 하나만을 택해야 한다면 하 엔틸롭 캐년 구경을 추천하여 저희들은 하 엔틸롭 캐년을 택했습니다. 도착한 시간이 정오 때라 상 엔틸롭 캐년 입장료도 1.5배를 달라고도하고요.

Even after a small amount rain, the water comes up very fast in the canyon. Since some of tourist lost their lives after a flood, the sightseeing is only allowed with Navajo tour guide. The guided tours of upper and lower Antelope Canyon are allowed. Most comment by the tourist who visited both canyon indicated that the lower canyon is better if we have to choose one. Another factor was 1.5 times of regular entrance fee for noon tour.

적색 사암의 아름다운 색갈 변화는 아마 가장 많은 사진 소재가 되어 왔습니다. 햇살이 캐년 위에서 부터 둘어와 암석에 비취일 때 암석의 모든 색의 색상이 보여집니다. 또한 캐년의 매끈한 표면에 물과 바람으로 만들어진 파도 모양을 볼 수 있습니다. 프로 사진사들이 찍은 사진이 아무리 아름답다고해도 그 아름다움을 보여 줄 수 없습니다.  그 경외감을 겪어 보기위해서는 본인 직접 보시기 바랍니다.

Gorgeous color gradation of red sandstone is the subject of most photographed. As the sunlight streams into the canyon from the top, the color of the rock show all their hues as the light falls on the illuminated rocks. The rocks also shows the waves left on the smooth surface of canyon. Photographs, as beautiful as some of them are, don't do Antelope Canyon justice. It's a must see for everyone to really experience the awe.

가이드 관광은 일반 관광과 특별 관광이 있습니다. 일반 관광은 방문객이 많아 사람 없이 배경 찍기가 무척 힘들니다. 다음 그룹이 따라오니 가이드는 재촉도하고. 그렇다고 사진사 전용 특별 관광은 좋은 사진기 없이 비싼 요금 내기가 아깝고...

There are two guided tour: general tour and Special tour. During the general tour, it is very difficult to take the canyon pictures without the tourist getting into picture because of crowd and the guide hurrying the tourist for the next tour group. But, then, the fee for photography tour seems to steep without a very good camera.


Upper Antelope Canyon

나바호는 케년의 이 부분을 "빅한니리니" 또는 "바위 사이로 흐르는 물의 장소"로 부릅니다. 또한 관광 코스가 평평하여 가장 많은 방문객들이 들리는 곳이기도 하고요. 11시에서 2시 까지의황금 시간대는 입장료가 어른 40불이고, 다른 시간대는 26불 입니다.
The Navajo refer to this portion of the canyon as The Bighanilini or "the place where water runs through rock." This is the most visited section of the canyon since it is more flat path. The fee during the prime time (11 AM - 2 PM) is $40/adult, otherwise, it is $26/adult.


Lower Antelope Canyon

나선형 암석 아치란 뜻의 "Hasdeztwazi"가 하 엔텔롭 캐년의 이름 입니다. 이 구간은 더 길고 좁을 뿐 아니라 쇠 난간을 오르고 내려야 합니다. 그렇지만 굉장히 아름다운 지질 형성을 볼 수 있다는 것이 헛된 수고는 아닐 것 입니다. 입장료는 26불 입니다 ( 전에는 더 저렴했는데 하 엔틸롭 캐년을 찾는 관광객 수가 늘면서 가격을 올렸다고 하네요).
Hasdeztwazi, meaning "spiral rock arches", is the name of the lower portion of Antelope Canyon. This section requires to traverse longer and narrow sections as well as climbing the metal staircases. It is well worth the effort as the lower canyon offers a glimpse of stunning geography of the formation.

오늘 일정은 새벽 4시에 일어나 유타 (Utah)와 아리조나 (Arizona) 경계에 있는 모뉴멘트 벨리 (Monument Valley)에서 해뜨는 것을 구경하고 애리조나의 엔틸롭 케년,  호스슈 벤드을 경우해서 시닉 뷰(scenic view) 길를 따라 세도나까지 가는 것입니다. (Today's itinerary includes watching the sunrise at the Monument Valley on the border of Utah and Arizona with the wake-up call at 4 AM. After the tour of Monument Valley, we will head to Sedona, Arizona with stops at the Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend.)

오늘의 첫 방문지는 해 뜨는 것을 구경하기 위헤 모뉴멘트 벨리 한 가운데 있는 야지 입니다. 이 곳에서 해 뜨는 것을 기다리며 여행 가이드가 준비한 아침을 먹었는데 원주민들이 먹는 옥수수 빵과 차는 이 곳 분위기를 한층 더 뛰었습니다. 이 음식이 입에 맞지 않으면 다른 종류의 빵, 음료수, 과일을 드셔도 되고요. 구름이 잔뜻 낀 하늘이 새벽 4시에 일어난 수고를 헛되게하고 해 뜨는 것을 보지 못하나 걱정케 하였습니다. 그러나 시간에 맞추어 개인 하늘 덕분에 토템 폴 넘어 해 뜨는 경치는 정말 아름다웠고 기억에 남을 것입니다. 나바호 주민들이 애칭으로 "ET 의 손가락"이라고도 부르는 토템 풀은 뷰트(Butte)가 어떻게 침식되는가를 보여 주는 본보기 입니다. 그리고 영화 "아이거  생션(Eiger Sanction)"에서 클린튼 이스트우드가 서 있던 곳이기도 합니다. 오른쪽으로 보이는 바위 형상은 "나바호 불의 댄서(Yei Bi Chei)"라고 불리웁니다.

Today's first stop was at an open field in Monument Valley to watch the sunrise. While waiting for the sun to come up, we ate the breakfast prepared by the tour guide. The native corn bread and tea was just what we needed in the cool morning. They also provide other more familiar bread and drinks with fruits. Because of the cloudy sky, we thought that our early rising at 4 AM would be wasted and we would miss our chance to see the sunrise. But the sky cleared just in time and the rising sun behind the Totem Pole was one of most beautiful and memorable scenes. Totem Pole called "ET's finger" fondly by the Navajo is an example of what erosion does to a Butte. Clint Eastwood stood  atop of it during the making of "The Eiger Sanctions." South  of the Totem Pole is a formation called "Yei Bi Chei", meaning "the Navajo Fire Dancers".

이 아치는 나바호의 전통적 주택인 호간과 비슷하다고하여 큰 호간이라고 불리웁니다. 그 안에서 천정을 올려다 보면 어떻게 이 형태로 만들어 졌는지 의아할 따름입니다. 또한 이곳은 자연적 야외 음악당 이기도 하도군요. 여행 가이드가 그 안에서 부는 피리 소리는 정말 경이적 입니다.
This arch is called The Big Hogan since it resembles a hogan - traditional Navajo dwelling. Viewing this from underneath, it is a wonder trying to figure out how it is formed. It is also a natural outside concert dome. It was amazing to hear the sound of pipe played inside by the tour guide.

큰 호간 안에서 천정에 있는 구멍을 올려보면 벽에 있는 무늬가 꼭 독수리의 머리 같습니다.

When you look up toward the hole in the ceiling from inside, the coloring of walls on The Big Hogan looks like the head of an eagle.

표시판이 말하듯이 비의 신 메사 (Rain God Mesa) 입니다. 나바호 주술사들이 백성들에게 물을 허락해 주는 비의 신에게 기도하고 감사하던 곳이라고 하네요. 메사에 비의 신 얼굴 형상이 보인다고하는데 저는 글쎄요 였습니다. 그러나 사암층 밑 주변에 대수층에서 흘러 나온 자국이 있습니다.

As the sign indicates that it is Rain God Mesa. It is where Navajo medicine men prayed and gave thanks to the the Rain God who stored water for the people.They say that a face of Rain God appears on the mesa, but I had mu doubt. But you can see the dark steaks from the natural aquifer that seeps out of the base of the sandstone.

모뉴멘트 벨리에 오기 전에는 불모 지대라고만 생각했는데 초원은 아니지만 식물들이 꽤 자라고 있더군요. 이 지역엔 지하수가 꽤 풍부하다고 하는군요. 조상들의 땅을 지키면서도 개발의 가능성이 있는데 왜 그렇게 가난하게 사는지 안타갑더군요. 지역 어른들과 젊은 세대가 관광 수입을 위해 회전 도로를 포장할 것인가를 가지고 갈등이 있다고 하네요. 나바호 족은 아직도 척박한 땅에 허술한 집에서 살며 이 신성한 땅을 지키려는 그들의 열망을 잠깐 왔다가는 우리 여행객들이 이해할 수 있을까요.
We thought that Monument Valley is the wasteland without much rainfall, but there were areas where plants are growing even though it is not a prairie. They say that there are ample underground water. It was sad to see Navajo to live in poverty with the plenty of potential for the development for the area. I could understand and sympathize with their desire to keep the land as they inherited. We understood that there are conflicts among the tribe, old vs young, if the loop road should be paved for the tourist. we, the tourists, are probably hard to understand their desire to protect the sacred land while living in a shabby house in the barren land.

이스트 벙어리 장갑 바위 (해발 1898 m)와 웨스트 벙어리 장갑 바위 (해발 1882 m)는 두 개의 독특한 지질 구조를 가졌고 메릭 바위와 함께 삼각 구조를 만듭니다. 메릭 바위는 이 공원 은광 시굴자 이름을 딴 것입니다.
East (6226 ft, 1898 m in elevation) and West (6176 ft, 1882 m) Mitten Buttes (pronounced byoots) are two distinctive geological features and the two form a triangle with Merrick's Butte. Merrick Butte is named after a prospector who discovered silver inside the park.

Monument Valley has been the location for over 16 major movies including the films by director John Ford. In the words of critic Keith Phipps, "its five square miles have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West."

호간(hogan)은 나바호 인디안들이 사는 전통적 주택입니다. 세 개의 기둥에 통나무, 덤불, 진흙으로 지어진 원뿔 모양의 오두막 집 입니다. 각 가정은 요즈음 현대식 건물에 살더라도 전통적 종교 의식을 위하여 전통적 호간이 꼭 있었야만 한다고 합니다.
A hogan is the primary traditional home of the Navajo people. It is a conical hut constructed of three forked poles covered with logs, brush and mud. Every family, even if they live in a newer home, must have the traditional hogan for the traditional religious ceremonies.

멕시코 모자 바위는 사암이 부식되어 현재의 모습을 만든  지질학적 경이 입니다. 멕시코 모자를 뜻하는 스페인어 솜브레로(Sombrero)는 철자 쓰기가 힘들다는 이 고장 원로들의 고집으로 영어 이름으로 불리우게 되었다고 하네요.
Mexican Hat Rock is named after a geological marvel of erosion which sculpted the sandstone into what it is today. Sombrero, the Spanish word for the Mexican Hat, was too difficult to spell, so the town founders stuck to their guns on the English version of the word.

하이웨이 163 를 따라 모뉴멘트 벨리로 가는 이 길은 아주 유명한 장면입니다. 이곳 주민들에게 애칭으로 "포레스트 검프"의 길이라 불리우는 이 곳은 영화에서 포레스트가 집으로 가기로 결정하고 되돌아 가던 길입니다.
The road to Monument Valley on Highway 163 is the well recognized view. This road is called "The Forrest Gump" road by the locals. It's the one Forrest was walking on when he decided to turn around and go home.

모뉴멘트 벨리는 국립공원이 아니고 천 육백만 에어커 나바호 자치국 안에 있는나바호 부족 공원입니다. 그 안에 벨리를 지나는 순환 도로 입장료는 5불 입니다. 22.5 Km 거리의 정지된 도로를 따라 잘 알려진 유적물들을 볼 수 있습니다: 장갑 바위, 세 자매, 좐 포드 포인트, 토템 폴, 그리고 바람의 귀. 길의 상태에 따라 SUV 이면 몰라도 승용차로 이 길을 운전하는 것은 큰 모험일 수 있습니다. 벨리를 하이크하거나 유적물들을 더 가까운 곳에서 보기를 원하면 요금을 내고 나바호 가이드를 채용해야 합니다. 여행사들은 나바호 주민들만이 운영할 수 있는데 후회하지 않으실 것입니다. 추천할 것은 아침 일찍이나 저녁 늦게하시는 관광이 좋고 기후에 따라 무개차나 유개차를 사용하십시오 (바람 몹시 부는 날 무개차는 아마 힘들 것 입니다).

Monument Valley is a Navajo Tribal park (not US national park) located within the 16 million acre Navajo Nation and charges a fee of $5/person (free for kids 9 and under) for the access to the loop road through valley. A 14 mile graded dirt loop road allows the viewing of the most well known monuments: The Mittens, Three Sisters, John Ford'd Point, Totem Pole and Ear of the Wind. Depending on the road condition, it might be an adventure to use a family car on the loop road unless it is SUV. You must hire a Navajo guide for a additional fee if you wish to hike the valley or to visit sites not on the loop or to see the monuments in close. The tour companies are owned by natives and it was worth for the money. If you decide to take the tour, it is recommended for early morning or late evening. Also, pick either open car or closed cap car depending on weather (You don't want to ride an open car in the windy day).

워낙 국립공원 안에 있는 호텔 상태가 천차 만별이라 어떤 기대를 가져야 하는지 자신이 없어지만 97불 가격 포함하여 뜻박에 기대 이상 이었습니다. 방은 크고 깨끗하였고 침대는 편안했습니다. 한가지 인상적인 것은 유럽에서 온 호텔 손님들이 많았던 것입니다.

We were not sure what to expect from this hotel since the condition of hotels in the national park varies greatly. But it was a pleasant surprise.($97.02). The room was large and clean and bed was comfortable. An interesting note is that a lot of hotel guests were from Europe.

중간에 길을 잘못 들어 늦게 도착하는 바람에 들리지 못해 평을 할 수 없지만 들리신 분들은 소감을 알려 주십시오. 유타는 다시 한 번 더 들릴 예정입니다.

Valley of the Gods: There is a 17 mile dirt and gravel road through the valley, but a high clearance vehicle is recommended. If it is similar to the road in the Monument Valley, check the road condition before you drive into with a family car.

Natural Bridges: There is a 8 mile loop road to three natural bridges.

미네소타 주 미네아폴리스와 세인트 폴 지역 맛집 방문기 (Restaurant review of Minneapolis and St Paul area in Minnesota)

오래전에 미드타운 글로발 마켓 소식을 들었지만 이 지역에 갈 기회가 없어 들려 보지를 못했는데 이번에 일부러 찾아 가기로하고 들렸습니다. 2006년에 문을 연 이 마켓은 세계 각 나라의 식품, 음식, 예술품, 공예품을 파는 국제적 분위기의 시장입니다. (We heard about Midtown Global Market long time ago, but we never had a chance to visit. On the recent outing, we decided to try the place to find out ourselves. The Midtown Global Market which opened in 2006 is an international themed market featuring ethnic grocery, restaurant, and arts and crafts from around world.)

식품점들은 저희들이 매일 먹는 음식들이 아니라 그냥 지나 쳤고 예술품과 공예품점들은 흥미  있는 물건들이 있었지만 가격이 좀 높은 편이더군요. 저희들의 주 목적은 먹자 골목에 있었습니다. 모든 식당들이 테스트 사이즈가 없기에 이곳 저곳 기울이다가 "왼손 잡이 요리사 (Left Handed Cook)" 식당에서 시식해보기로 결정하였습니다. 다른 식당들은 다음에 들려 시식한 후 보고 하겠습니다.

We skipped most of grocery stores since they are not our daily food needs. Art and craft shops carried some interesting items, but the price seems higher for the value. Our curiosity was for the available foods and there were quite few restaurants. Since they did not offer the trial size, we settled on one of them: The Left Handed Cook. We will report on other restaurants after we try them.

미드타운 글로발 마켓 안에 있는 식당 중 평이 좋은 식당 중에 하나인 "왼손 잡이 요리사 (Left Handed Cook)" 에서 시식을 하였습니다. 진 갈비(Gene Short Rib) (9불)은 비빔밥 흉내를 낸 용기가 훌륭했지만 비빔밥도 아닌 것이 비빔밥 행세를 하던군요. 맛도 별로 이구요. 빅 훌리 (Big Huli) (8불50)는 닭 고기 샌드위치인데 맛 있게 먹었습니다. 한식을 흉내 낸 것은 잡수지 마시고 다른 퓨전 음식을 추천합니다.

We have picked the Left Handed Cook for our first try since it was one of restaurants with good review.
Gene Short Rib ($9) is imitating a Korean dish called "Bi-Bib-Bap". This is a great try of fusioning a traditional Korean dish, but it fails bad as it acts like "Bi-Bib-Bap". Big Huli ($8.50) is a chicken sandwich and it was tasty. We recommend to avoid any Korean-like dishes, but try any other fusion dishes.

Driving Cross Country (미국 대륙횡단) - New Mexico - 2 (뉴 멕시코 - 2 편)

산타 페 (Santa Fe)에서 케년 로드 (Canyon Road) 다음에 들린 곳은 국제 민속 박물관 (Museum of International Folk Art) 입니다. 가는 날이 장날이라고 저희들이 들린 다음 날 미술 시장이 서기 떄문에 무척이나 북적대든군요. 파킹장도 없어 멀리서 셔틀 버스를 사영해야 했으니까요.
Our next stop after Canyon Road in Santa Fe was the Museum of International Fork Art. For our luck, we had to use the shuttle bus since he parking lot was blocked off for the art market scheduled for the following day.

그 많은 나라와 문화의 공예픔들을 한 장소에서 본다는 것은 정말 압도적인 경험이었습니다. 그러나 전시품들이 어떤 논리적인 순서를 따라 전시된 것이 아니라서 그런지 각 문화를 이해한다는 것은 거의 불가능 했습니다. 그래도 독특하고 재미난 방문 이었습니다.

It was certainly overwhelming experience to see so many artifacts from so many different countries and cultures. But, it was impossible to soak up each culture since the displays do not seem to follow any logical order. Yet, it was unique and fun place to visit.

이 식당은 생각치 않게 카운터에서 주문하고 음식이 나오면 카운터에서 가져오는 패스트 푸드 분위기 였습니다. 소고기 도시락 (Beef Bento, $10.50)은 큰 도시의 웬만한 식당에 못지않게 맛 있었는데 카터필라 롤 (Caterpillar roll, $10.95)은 향상의 여지가 있었습니다. 저희들이 산타 페에 간다면 다시 들릴 것입니다. 분위기라고는 없지만 점심 손님들로 무척 북적였습니다.

Beef Bento/소고기 도시락

It has a fast food atmosphere which you order at the counter and wait for your food. But the food was a pleasant surprise. Beef Bento ($10.50) is really good even compared to the restaurants in the large cities. Caterpillar roll ($10.95) could have been better, but it was good enough such that we will go back if we are in  Santa Fe again. There is no ambient to speak of, but the pl;ace was busy with lunch crowd.

이 모텔 방들은 깨끗했습니다만 대개 호탤들에 있는 편의품들이 없드군요. 침대는 잠자기에  편했지만  담요가 낡은 편 이었습니다. 지나 가는 길에 쉬워가기에는 괜찮은 모텔입니다. 단 한가지 저희들이 묵은 방 쪽은 금연 지역이라는데 담배 냄새가 꽤 났습니다.
The room was clean, but there was no amenities. The bed was comfortable, but the blanket was showing the age. It is OK place if you need a place to rest while passing through. It had a smoke smell even though the section was non-smoking rooms.

Driving Cross Country (미국 대륙횡단) - New Mexico - 1 (뉴 멕시코 - 1 편)

뉴 멕시코 (New Mexico)에 들리면서 산타 페 (Santa Fe)냐 엘버커키(Albuquerque)냐 저울질하다 저희들 성향에 더 맞을 것 같은 산타페로 방향을 결정하였습니다. As we were heading toward New Mexico, we were weighing between Santa Fe and Albuquerque for our next stop. We choose Santa Fe since we thought that this city might be more of our liking.

Canyon Road (케년로드)

케년로드는  1.2 Km 길이의 갤러리, 상점, 식당들이 많은 산타페 지역입니다. 이곳은 스페인 정착민들의 주택가 였든 것이 1920 년도 쯤 예술가들이 모여 들면서 주택들을 갤러리와 상점으로 바꾸었습니다. 이 곳 갤러리들은 여러 장르의 예술품들을 다루기에 어떤 종류를 좋아하시든지 만족할 수 있을 것 입니다.

Canyon Road is a 3/4-mile Santa Fe's art district with galleries, other shops and restaurants. It was once a residential area for early Spanish settlers, but artists flocked to this area around 1920 transformed the residence into galleries and shops. The galleries offer  to satisfy any preference.

저희들은 아침 일찍 케년로드를 들렸는데 상쾌함을 만끽했습니다. 방문객들도 없고하여 한가히 산책을 하며 구경할 수 있었습니다. 랠러리는 몇군데 밖에 안들렸지만 갤러리 밖에 전시된 그림이나 조각들이 저희들의 주의를 끌기에 충분했습니다. 케년로드에 있는 거의 모든 정원들이 조각 정원 이었습니다. 또한 케년로드에 옛적 푸근함을 주는 벽돌 건축물들이 인상적이었습니다.

We visited the Canyon Road early in the morning and it was very refreshing. It also allowed us to have the leisurely stroll without the crowd. Even though we did not try many galleries, the arts and the sculptures displayed outside of galleries were more than enough to hold our attention. Nearly every yard on the Canyon Road is a beautiful sculpture garden. We also enjoyed the adobe architecture which gives Canyon Road its old world charm.

몇 가지 주의할 것은 주차하는 것이 매우 힘들 수 있고 (셔틀 버스 있음) 보도가 매우 좁습니다 (어린 아이들과 함께 있다면 조심하십시오). 식사 때가 아니라 이곳 식당에서 시식을 못해 식당평은 없습니다. 케년로드 산책을 적극 추천합니다. 돈 없이도, 예술을 잘 몰라도 즐길 수 있는 장소 이니깐요.

Be warned that the parking would be an adventure (may try the shuttle) and the sidewalk is narrow (be careful if you visit with the children). We can not comment on the restaurants since we did not stay long enough to try them. We recommend the stroll along Canyon Road since you don't need a deep pocket or interest in art to enjoy it.

이 곳에서 교회를 보리라고는 생각도 못했습니다.
It was a surprise to find a church in the middle of district.

한가지 더 알려 드릴 것 - 방문객들이 많아 상점 주인들이 귀찮기도 하겠지만 하여튼 인심은 좋은 것은 아니더군요. 화랑에서는 물건 사는 손님아니면 화장실은 절대 못쓰게 합니다. 식당들도 눈치보게 만들고.
Another advice - I could understand the reluctance of gallery owners allowing the visitors to use their restrooms, but they will not let you use their restroom even it is emergency unless you are paying customer. For that moment, you may have to become the unscheduled customer at the one of restaurants.

Santa Fe Plaza - We heard this place gets really alive with activities at night, but be wary of the inflated prices if shopping.

미네아폴리스 지역에서 햄버거를 제일 잘한다는 식당들 소문도 듣고 논평도 보고하여 저희들도 한번 시식해 보자하고 결정을 하였습니다. 저희들 식성에 따라서 선호순으로 적습니다.

In-and-Out:
(2013년 10월) 여전히 인 앤 아웃 (In-and-Out)을 따를 곳은 아직 없네요.
이 햄버거 체인점은 주로 서부에 있고 메뉴는 보통의 햄버거 집과 별 다른 것이 없습니다. 그러나 이 식당을 들리기 전에 꼭 인터넷을 찾아 보고 가세요. 메뉴판에 없는 비밀 메뉴를 시켜야 이 식당에서는 제대로 먹을 수가 있습니다. 저희들 식성에는 "동물 스타일 (animal style)"이 최고 입니다. 저희들이 켈리포니아에 갈때에는 꼭 들리는 식당이기도하구요. 아직 미네소타에는 이 식당이 없는데 아마 곧 식당 사인을 보게 되지 않을까 합니다.
메뉴에 없는 스타일:
동물 스타일 (Animal Style): 피클, 구운 양파, 사우전 아이랜드 드레싱 (Thousand Island Dressing)
프로테인 스타일 (Protein Style): 빵 대신에 레터스로 만듬
동물 스타일 감자튀김 (Animal Style Fri): 오래 튀긴 감자

My Burger (마이 버거):
세인트 루이스 팍, 미네소타 (St Louis Park, MN)
미네소타 지역 햄버거 체인점인데 수련 받던 곳 근처에 있기에 점심 시간에 들렸습니다. 실내 장식은 60년, 70년대 분위기 입니다. 켈리포니아 버거 (5불 95전)를 시켰는데 전체적 맛은 스메쉬 버거와 비슷하지만 좀 더 나은 것 같았습니다. 감자 후라이는 따뜻하게 서브된 것이 특별한 것은 없지만 맛 있게 먹었습니다.

 Smashburger (스메쉬 버거):
미국 전역에 있는 햄버거 체인점인데 중서부 지역에 생겼다는 소문을 듣고 들렸습니다. 햄버거 고기를 얼리지 않은 것으로 알려져 있다고하네요. 먹어 본 햄버거는 클래식 스매쉬 (Classic Smash) 버거 ($5.99)와 스파이시 바하 스매쉬 (Spicy Baja Smash) 버거 ($6.99)인데 햄버거가 느끼하지 않고 신선한 맛이 있었습니다. 고기가 다른 집보다 얇아서 그랬는지도 모르지만요. 그리고 스파이시 바하 스매쉬 버거는 꽤 매운 맛이 있었습니다. 감자 후라이는 꼭 단 감자 후라이($2.29)를 시키십시오. 로즈마리 올리브 오일에 마늘과 함께 튀긴 것인데 맛이 색다르고 맛있었습니다. 쉐이크는 다른 분들의 평은 좋았지만 별로 특별한 것은 없었습니다.

손님들의 평들을 보면 이 체인점의 문제는 각 체인점의 획일성, 더 나아가 체인점에서도 누가 만드느냐에 따라 음식에 획일성이 없다는 것 입니다. 그렇다면 저희가 들린 날은 운이 좋았던 것 같읍니다.

Five Guys (화이브 가이즈):
공짜 음식을 좋아하신다면 제대로 찾으셨습니다. 화이브 가이는 음식을 주문하고 기다리는 동안 드시라고 껍질있는 땅콩을 줍니다. 그러나 몆 개 먹지도 못하실 거애요. 왜냐하면 주문 음식이 바로 나오기 때문이지요. 햄버거 선택은 치즈, 베이컨 또는 치즈와 베이컨 입니다. 또한 당신만의 "특별한(special)" 햄버거을 만들기 위한 8 가지의 토핑(topping)이 준비되어 있습니다. 우리가 제일 맛 있어 하는 햄버거는  "얼더웨이 (All The Way)" 햄버거인데 이것은 토핑 목록 의처음 8가지를 얹은 것입니다. 저희가 처음 이곳 햄버거를 먹어 본 곳은  필라델피아인데 미네소타에서 먹은 것은 별로 기대 이하 였습니다. 품질 관리가 문제가 아닌가 합니다.

Groveland Tap (1834 St Clair Ave St Paul 55105)
약간 맵싸한 햄버거를 먹어 보기위해 Cajun Lucy ($7.50) 을 주문했습니다.  햄버거는 괜찮은 편이었지만 특별하지는 않았습니다. 토핑과 토핑 없이 햄버거를 먹어 본 결과 제가 토핑 있는 햄버거를 좋아 한다는 것을 알았으니 저의 평은 약간 편견이 있겠습니다. 맘껏 먹을 수 있는 생선 접시는 좋은 딜이지만 칩(chip)은 더 주지 않고 생선만 더 줍니다. 생선만 계속 더 먹기란 약간 힘들런지도 모르죠. 또한 이 식당에서 잘 알려져 있는 broasted 닭은 일요일만 한다고 하여 다음 기회로 미루었습니다.

Matt's Bar: (3500 Cedar Ave S. Minneapolis 55407)
Jucy Lucy (스펠링이 잘 못 된 것 아닙니다)란 두개의 햄버거 패티 사이에 어메리칸 치즈를 넣은 것입니다. Matt's Bar와 5-8 Club이 서로 원조라고 으르렁 거리기는 하지만요. 햄버거 $5.50이면 가격은 괜찮았지만 고기가 너무 (dry)말랐습니다. 혹 고기를 너무 오래 굽지 않았나 하네요. 감자 튀김 (fry, $3.25/반 접시)은 따뜻하고 바삭 바삭한 것이 맛 있었습니다. 코카 콜라는 한 캔에 $1.65가 좀 비싸드군요. 이 식당은 전형적 동네 술집 분위기 입니다. 우리가 들린 날은 곧 자리를 잡았지만 점심이나 저녁 시간엔 꽤 기다린다고 합니다. 기다릴 장소도 없는 것이 문 옆 카운터에서 식사를 하시는 분들께 미안 하더군요. 아마 저라면 음식이 어디로 넘어가는지도 몰랐을 것입니다. 이제 "원조"를 먹어보았으니 좀 더 맛 있는 햄버거 가게를 찾아야 할 것 같군요.

우리는 5-8 Club은 들리지 않기로 하였습니다. 서로 "원조"라 하지만 대부분 평들이 햄버거는 Matt's Bar 와 비슷하지만 감자 튀김은 거진 다 Mat's Bar 가 더 좋다는 평 이었기 때문입니다.

The Nook (더 눅): (492 Hamline Ave S. St Paul MN 55116)
이 식당은 저희들이 햄버거 식당들을 방문할 때 화재로 문을 닫았었는데 다시 개장을 한 후 들렸습니다. Juicy Nookie 햄버거 (8불 95전)를 주문했는데 다른 식당에 비해 고기 질도 못하고  햄버거 전체의 맛도 한단계 아래 같읍니다. 이것으로 Juicy Lucy 햄버거 집 순회는 끝낼려고 합니다. 토요일 저녁에 들려 자리 날 때까지 약 30 분 기다렸고 재미있는 것은 지하에 볼링장이 있다는 것 입니다. 볼링을 하면서 자리 날 것을 기다려도 됩니다. 식당의 분위기는 동네 술집을 연상하시면 되겠습니다. 식당에 따로 주차장은 없고 길거리 주차는 행운을 빕미다.

Annie's Parlor: (313 14th Ave SE, Minneapolis)
패스트 푸드 함버거에 지치셨으면 아니즈 팔러에서 밀크세이크와 드셔보세요. 근래에는 가 본적이 없어 얼마나 변했는지는 모르겠습니다만 식사 때는 근처 대학의 학생들과 직원들로 바쁠 수 있습니다.

화재 사고가 있은 후 다시 가게 문을 열었지만 아직 들리지를 못했습니다. 곧 평을 올리도록...

After I have heard and read number of reviews about "best" hamburger places in Minneapolis, our family finally decided to try few selected places. In the order of our preferences (all of them are decent, but if I have to choose only one)

In-and-Out:
(Oct, 2013) No place has yet have better hamburger than In-and-Out.
This is only burger place you should do some Internet research before you go. Their menu is similar to any other burger joints, but the "secret" menu is the one you should try. Most of time, we order the burger as "animal style" and it is best for our taste. We always stop at In-and-Out whenever we visit California. So far, we only found In-and-Out in California and some of western states, but I am sure we will see the sign in our town near future.
Secret Menu:
Animal Style: pickle, fried onion, Thousand Island Dressing
Protein Style: Wrap with lettuce instead of bread
Animal Style Fries: Well-done Fries

My Burger:
St Louis Park, MN
This is a chain burger house in Minnesota. I decided to try it since there was one near the place I had a training class. The interior design was something out of 1960 or 1970. I ordered California burger ($6.95) and the overall taste was similar to that of Smashburger, but it was a little better. The fries were served hot and was good even though nothing was special compared to other places.

Smashburger:
This is another national chain burger house. We heard they opened in the mid-west while visiting California and decided to try it. They are known for using never frozen meat patties. We have tried Classic Smash burger ($5.99) and Spicy Baja Smash burger ($6.99) and the burgers were less oily and more fresh taste. Maybe, the thinner beef patty than other burger places may contribute the fresh taste. Spicy Baja Smash is really spicy as the name indicated. We strongly recommend the Sweet Potato Fries. They are toasted in Rosemary, olive oil with garlic and are quite different. Shake ($3.99) had good reviews from other guests, but it was nothing special.

Also, other reviews indicated the uniformity problem among the chains, worse even at the same store depending on the cook. Maybe we were lucky on our visit.

Five Guys:
If you like free food, they provide shell-on peanuts to snack while you wait. But, you don't have much time to snack on peanuts because you get your order fast. The selection of hamburger is with cheese, with bacon, or with cheese and bacon. But they have number of toppings you can order to make the "special" burger. It was a good burger experience. An "All The Way" burger will be served with first 8 toppings on their topping list. We have tried Five Guys in Minnesota and it was not as good as we had in Philadelphia. Maybe, quality control problem?

Groveland Tap: (1834 St Clair Ave. St Paul, 55105)
We wanted to try the spicy burger and we ordered Cajun Lucy($7.50). It was decent, but nothing special. The review may be somewhat biased since I found that I like the burger with some toppings after trying with  and without.  Side note: "All you can eat fish & chips" was a good deal, but they only give you additional fishes (Unless you saved some chips, all you will be eating is the fried fishes.). We could not try the broasted chicken since it is available on Sunday only.

Matt's Bar: (3500 Cedar Ave S. Minneapolis 55407)
The Jucy Lucy (not a misspelling) is served with the American cheese between the meat patties. The hamburger at $5.50 is reasonable price, but the burger was a little dry (possibly over cooked) on our visit. Also there is no toppings for the burger.The fries ($3.25, half order) was good and served hot and crispy. The soda is a little expensive at $1.65 for a single can. The place looks like a typical neighborhood bar. Even though we got the table without wait, it could be a long wait depending on the time of your visit and there is no place for wait. I felt sorry for people who is having the dinner at the bar stool near the entrance door. For me, I would be very uncomfortable eating my dinner with all these people standing next to me. I now have tried the "original" and I will go some place else for the better.

The 5-8 Club: (5800 Cedar Ave. S. Minneapolis 55417)
We did not try the 5-8 Club since most of reviews put their burger at the same level as Matt's Bar and fries at Matt's Bar got consistently better mark than the 5-8 Club.

The Nook (더 눅): (492 Hamline Ave S. St Paul MN 55116)
This restaurant was closed because of the fire when we were making the round for Juicy Lucy. We heard it is reopened and finally had a chance to stop by. We tried Juicy Nookie Burger ($8.95). The beef was not as good as other restaurants and overall taste was also one notch lower than others. We think this would be the last place to stop for Juicy Lucy. For a dinner in the Saturday evening, it was about 30 minute wait for the table. One interesting about the place is that you could wait for the table while bowling in the basement. The ambience is that of corner pub. There was no off street parking and the street parking si not as bad as other places.

Annie's Parlor: (313 14th Ave SE, Minneapolis)
If you are tired of fast food hamburger, this may be the place to have the hamburger with the shake. The place could get busy during the lunch or dinner time with student crowd. I am not sure how much it changed since it has been some time since the last visit.

Casper & Runyon's Nook: (492 Hamline Ave South St Paul 55116)
We have not been at this place since they reopened after the fire damaged the store.
