South Dakota (3) - Bedland (사우스 다코타 주 (3) - 배드 렌드)

사우스 다코타 주 월은 여행객들에게 무료로 냉수를 건네 주던 것으로 유명한 월약국이 있는 곳입니다.  간판이 약국이라지만 한국식 약국이 아닌 식당을 겸한 잡화상 비슷한 곳입니다. 그러나 지금은 작은 쇼핑몰 크기의 여행객들에게 물건들을 비싸게 파는 곳이 된 것 같읍니다. 꼭 가보았다 하시고 싶으면 잠시 들리십시오.
Wall, South Dakota is the home of the famous Wall Drug which was known for "free ice water" for travelers. Now it is a huge tourist trap resembling a small mall. You may stop at Wall Drug if you want to cross it off from your list to visit.

베드랜드(Badlands)로 들어가는 피나클(Pinnacle) 입구는 월(Wall)에서 남쪽으로 13 Km 떨어진 곳에 있습니다. 베드랜드는 산마루, 밑동, 협곡, 첨탑, 그리고 벼랑 등으로 구성되어 있고 2천 5백년 내지 3천 5백년된 화석이 많은 대지 입니다.

The Pinnacle Entrance of Badlands National Park is about eight miles south from Wall. The Badlands are composed of ridges and butts, gorges and gulches and pinnacles and precipices. It contains the most fossil rich beds in the world dating from 25 to 35 million years ago.

공원을 지나가는 50 Km 거리의 반원 길을 따라 가면서 곳곳에 있는 전망대에 서서 구경을 하였습니다. 아름다운 암석 모습과 다른 색갈의 지층대를 한껏 감상하세요. 침식으로 새겨진 땅을 걸으면서 다른 세계에 와있구나 착각할 정도 입니다. 사진으로 보고 느끼느 것과 직접 보는 것의 차이가 너무 커 안타갑습니다. 전망대는 주변 경치를 바라보루 수 있도록 해 놓은 시설 간혹 화장실이 있는 곳도 있습니다. 한참을 구경하다 보니 배가 고프다는 연락을 보네네요. 시다패스 식당(Cedar Pass)에서 점심을 먹었는데 다른 선택이 없는 것에 비해 값도 적당한 편이었고 저희들이 배가 고파서였는지는 모르지만 맛 있게 먹었습니다.

As we drove the 31-mile loop through the park, we stopped at almost every lookout along the way. You may want to take in the beautiful rock formations and colorful bands of strata. It is easy to imagine that we were on another planet as we walked the erosion etched landscape. The pictures do not serve well to show the real beauty of the park. Some of the overlooks have the guided trail and/or restroom facility. You may grab a lunch at Cedar Pass Restaurant. the price was reasonable considering there is no alternative and the food tasted good or maybe we were so hungry...

베드랜드 국립고원에서 하이웨이 240번 동쪽 출구로 나오면 냉전 시대를 상기케하는 국립사적지가 하이웨이 90번 가까운 곳에 있습니다. 이곳 미니멧 미사일 국립사적지에서 미사일 격납고와 작전 센터를 볼 기회가 있습니다.

As we exit the Badlands National Park at the east end of highway 240, there is a national historic site reminding the Cold War near the interstate 90.. The Minuteman Missile National Historic Site consists of missile silos and a control center.

사우스 다코타 미첼(Mitchell, South Dakota)에 있는 "옥수수 궁전(Corn Palace)"에 도착 했을 때는 어두워 지기 시작했습니다. 1921년에 세워진 이 건믈은 다 목적으로 사용되는 시민 문화회관입니다. 매년 옥수수 궁전 밖가 쪽에 새 벽화를 디자인한다고 합니다. 옥수수를 사용하여 이 벽화를 만들기에 "옥수수 궁전"이라 불리우는 것이고요. 저희들이 별로 기대를 안해서였는지 생각했던 것 보다 멋있었습니다.

It was getting dark when we arrived at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. The place is a multi-purpose community center built in 1921. New murals are designed on the exterior of the Corn Palace each year and it was impressive than I expected. Maybe our expectation was too low.

여행 중에는 가능하면 저녁은 패스트 후드점에서 먹지 않으려했는데 오늘은 "옥수수 궁전 (Corn Palace)"에서 다시 하이웨이 길로 나오는 도중에 적당한 지역 식당을 찾지 못해 할 수 없이 패스트 후드점에서 저녁을 때웠습니다.
We tried not to eat the dinner at the fast food places while traveling, but we couldn't find any local restaurant heading back to the highway from the Corn Palace and ended up having a dinner at the fast food place.

오늘밤은 미네소타 주 파이프스톤(Pipestone)에 있는 크로싱 인 앤드 수이트(Crossings Inn & Suite)에서 보내기로 했습니다. 킹사이즈 베드는 굉장히 편안했고 방은 깨끗했습니다. 하이웨이 90번에서 30분을 운전해 들어 온 것이 잘했다고 생각합니다. 사우스 다코타, 커스터에서 시작하여 중간에 이곳 저곳 들리며 725 Km을 운전하고 호텔에 도착하니 꽤나 늦었네요. 어린 아이들과 여행하신다면 하루에 하시기에는 약간 너무 긴 여정이 될 수도 있습니다.
We plan to spend the night at the Crossings Inn & Suite in Pipestone, Minnesota. The king size bed was very comfortable and the room was very clean. It was worth to drive 30 minutes from I-90 to stay at the Crossings. It was quite late when we arrived at the hotel after driving more than 450 miles starting from Custer, South Dakota with number of stops. This could be a little too long trip if you are traveling with children.
