Montana - Glacier National Park (1) (몬태나 주 - 글레시어 국립공원 (1))

몬태나에 있는 글레시어 국립공원(Glacier National Park) 방문 일정 첫날은 이스트 글레시어 팍(East Glacier Park)에서 숙박 후 매니 글레시어 (Many Glacier)를 들렸다가 "해로 가는 길 (Going-to-the-Sun Road)"을 따라 서쪽으로 이동한 후 에셋스 (Essex)  근처에서 머물 예정입니다. 두째날은 다시 이스트 글레시어 팍 (East Glacier Park)로 나와 조식을 하고 투 메디신 호수 (Two Medicine Lake)에 들린 후 글레시어 국립공원을 떠나 몬타나 주 빌링 (Billing, Montana)으로 향 할 예정입니다. 아래 지도를 참조하세요.
After staying in East Glacier Park first night, we plan to travel to the west along "Going-to-the-Sun" Road after visiting Many Glacier. We have a reservation at the motel near Essex for the second night in Glacier NP. We will start the second day with the breakfast at Eat Glacier Park. We will head to Billing Montana after the stop at the Two Medicine Lake. Please refer to the map below.

글레시어 이름이 말하듯 미국에서 가장 광대한 양의 빙하가 있었던 곳이었으나 2030년 정도에 글레시어 국립공원(Glacier National Park)에 있는 빙하들이 없어질 예정이라니 가능한한 빠른 시일 내에 글레시어 국립공원(Glacier National Park)을 방문하시기를 추천합니다. 약 100년 전만해도 공원 안에 150 개의 빙하가 있었는데 2005년에는 27개 밖에 않남았다고 하네요.
As the name in Glacier Park indicates, it contained the most glacier in USA. But, we recommend that you visit the Glacier National Park in near future since the glaciers are expected to disappear by 2030. There were as many as 150 glaciers in the park about 100 years ago, but there were only 27 remained in 2005.

해지기 전에 이스트 글레시어 팍 (East Glacier Park)에 도착하려 했지만 늦어져 밤에 세인트 메리(St. Mary)에서 하이웨이 49 번을 따라 내려오는데 꾸불꾸불 한 길이 밤에 운전하기에는 꽤 조심이 되더군요. 그래도 밤 늦게 도착하였지만 모텔 주인께서 저희들을 기다려 주시더군요. 감사.

We tried, but couldn't arrive at East Glacier Park before the sunset yesterday. As we were warned, the highway 49 to East Glacier Park from St. Mary is a winding road and is not easy road to drive at night. But, the motel owner stayed up waiting for us even though we got there late. Thanks to owners.

저희들이 머물은 마운테인 파인 모텔 (Mountain Pine Motel)은 주변의 호텔에 비해 숙박비가 싼 편이지만 방들은 깨끗했습니다. 아침은 인터넷 평도 좋고 모텔 주인도 추천을 하여 휘슬 스톱 (Whistle Stop) 식당에서 먹었는데 정말 소문대로 맛있게 푸짐하게 먹었습니다. 밖에 있는 간판에 적힌대로 허클베리 후렌치 토스트 와 오믈렛을 드십시오.

The room rate at Mountain Pine Motel was less than that of other hotels in the area, but the rooms were clean. We ate the breakfast at Whistle Stop Restaurant which was recommended by the motel owners and also had good review. The portion of food was large enough and the food was good. We recommend Huckleberry French toast and Omelet as posted in the outside sign.

이침 식사를 끝낸 후 맑은 아침 공기를 마시며 걷다 보니 황당하게도 세상에서 제일 큰 보라색 숫갈이라면서 앞 마당에 걸어놨네요.
As we walked back to the motel enjoying the fresh air, we found a purple spoon hanging in the front yard. Believe it or not, it claims that it is largest in the world.

물, 과일 등을 사러 근처에 있던 부라우니 그로서리 (Brownie Grocery)에 들렸는데 마침 샌드위치도 팔기에 점심 식사 용으로 주문하었습니다. 식후감은 잠시 후에...
이제 아침도 먹고 준비가 되었으니 글레시어 구경을 위하여 메니 글레시어 로 떠납니다. 하이웨이 49번을 따라 이스트 글레시어 팍 에서 세인트 메리로 (남쪽에서 북쪽으로) 올라가며 보는 경치가 반대로 가며 보는 경치보다 좋다고들 하네요. 저희들은 남쪽행을 밤에하여 비교할 기회가 없었지만...

We stopped at Brownie Grocery for the water and fruits, but we ended up ordering the take-out sandwiches for the lunch. We will report on the food later...
Since our stomach are full and ready, we are heading toward Many Glacier to start the sightseeing in the Glacier National Park. They claim that the scenery from highway 49 while traveling from East Glacier Park to St Mary (south to north) is better than that of traveling the opposite direction. Unfortunately, we couldn't tell since we traveled to the south at night...

주차장에서 호수로 넘어오는 언덕 길에서 본 매니 글레시아 (Many Glacier)호텔과 호텔 넘어 보이는 전경이 한폭의 그림 같읍니다. 매네 글레시어는 외 떨어져 있어 놓치기 쉬운 곳이나 안보면 후회할 곳입니다. 여행 경비가 충분하다면 이곳에서 아침에 일어난 기분도 삼삼 할 것 같읍니다.
The hotel and scenery behind it looking down from the hill is pretty as a picture. You may regret if you skip Many Glacier because it is away from other attractions. If the budget allows, this may be a good place to wake up in the morning.

공원 동쪽 입구에서 "해를 향해가는" 길을 따라 운전하면 세인트 메리 호수(St Mary Lake)는 길 남쪽에 있습니다. 이 호수는 길이가 16.1 Km 이지만 맥도날드 호수 만큼 폭이 넓지는 않습니다.
As you drive along the 'Going-to-the-Sun" road from the east side of the park, St Mary Lake is on the south side of the road. It is 10 miles long, but not as wide as Lake McDonald.

세인트 매리 폭포는 2층으로 된 물이 쎈 작은 폭포입니다. 폭포까지 가는 오솔길은 "해를 향해 가는 길" ("Going-to-the-Sun Road")에서 멀지 않습니다. 폭포 앞에 앉아 있는 것만으로도 한 여름의 더위를 식힐 수 있을 것입니다.
St Mary Falls toward west end of lake is a two-tiered strong little waterfall. It is a short walk to the waterfall from "Going-to-the-Sun" road. You could cool off the hot summer day just sitting in front of the fall.

"해를 향해 가는 길 (Going-to-the-Sun Road)"은 1932년에 완공되었고 글레시어 공원을 동서로 가로지르는 거리가 80 Km 인 장관의 포장된 길입니다. 이 길의 남쪽은 절벽이라 담이 약한 사람은 서쪽에서 동쪽으로 운전 할 것을 추천하네요. 이 길은 2000 미터 높이에 있는 로간 패스(Logan Pass)에서 대륙 분수령을 건너며 여러 모습의 지형들을 지나 갑니다. 로간 패스에 있는 주차장은 점심 때쯤 되면 벌써 만탕입니다. 저희들도 주차장을 몇 바퀴를 돈 후에야 자리를 찾을 수 있었습니다.

The "Going-to-the-Sun" road was completed in 1932 and is a spectacular 50 mile, paved highway that bisects the park east and west. If you have weak heart, they suggest that you drive from east to west since the south side of the road is sheer cliff. It crosses the continental divide at 6646 feet high Logan Pass and passes almost every type of terrain in the park. The parking lot at Logan Pass was full by the lunch time. We had to go around the lot few times before finding a spot.

한 여름에도 눈이 이렇게 쌓여 있네요. 눈 싸움을 하는 아가씨들을 보며 브라우니 그로서리 (Brownie Grocery) 에서 사 온 샌드위치를 먹은 것은 잊을 수 없는 기억입니다. 샌드위치도 한 결 더 맛있었고요.

It is still covered with snow in July. Having the sandwich we bought at Brownie Grocery while watching the girls having snow fight is something we won't forget. I think the scenery enhanced the taste of sandwich.

Logan Pass/로간 패스

"감추어진 호수(Hidden Lake)"로 가는 트레일에 관광객도 많았지만 시간 관계 상 아쉬움을 뒤로하고 떠났습니다.
There were a lot of visitors on the trail to Hidden Lake, but we left the Logan Pass with regret because of time.

맥도날드 호수는 "해로 가는 길" ("Going-to-the-Sun Road") 서쪽 끝에 있습니다. 이호수는 빙하시대의 빙하가 파 놓은 분지가 물로 채워져 생긴 호수로 글레시어 공원에서 가장 큰 호수입니다. 이 지역은 율굴나무(huckleberry)로 유명한데 사람들과 곰들이 많지 않은 열매를 가지고 싸워 꽤 비싼 편입니다. 맥도날드 호수 근처에서 먹어본 율굴 열매 아이스 크림은 맛 있었습니다. 꼭 먹어보세요.

Lake McDonald is located at the west end of The "Going-to-the-Sun" road. It is the largest lake filling the basin gouged out by Ice Age glaciers in Glacier National Park. This region is well known for the huckleberry which is relatively expensive since human and bear are competing for the little resource. We have tried the huckleberry ice cream near Lake McDonald and we recommend that you should try it.

오늘의 일정을 끝내고 하이웨이 2번에 있는 예약된 하프 웨이 모텔(Half Way Motel)에 도착하니 꽤 어두워졌네요. 단지 주의 하실 것은 이 모텔이 꽤 외떨어진 곳에 있어 주변에 아무 것도 없고 방에는 보통 호텔에서 볼 수 있는 편리함(비누, 샴푸 등)은 없습니다. 다른 선택의 여지도 없고 해서 모텔 주인들이 모텔과 겸해서 운영하는 식당에서 저녁을 먹었는데 양도 푸짐하고 맛 있게 먹었습니다. 방 수가 많은 것은 아니지만 가격도 쌋고 방들은 매우 깨끗했습니다. 또한 한적한 밤을 줄기든가, 숲속에서 상쾌한 아침을 맞기를 원하시면 아주 알맞은 곳입니다.

It was getting dark when we arrived at the Half Way Motel on highway 2 where we had a reservation. One thing to caution you about this motel is that there is nothing near by and there is no amenity (soap, shampoo, etc) in the room. Even though there is no alternative and we weren't sure what to expect, but we had a dinner at the restaurant run by the motel owners. The food was plenty to satisfy the hungry stomach and it was tasteful. The number of rooms are limited, but the rooms were clean and cheap compared to other hotels in the park. Also, it is right place for you if you want to spend a solitude night or get up with the refreshing air in the wood.
