큰바위 얼굴 (마운트 러쉬모어) (Mount Rushmore National Memorial)

사우스 다코타 블랙 힐즈(Black Hills, South Dakota)에 위치한 큰바위 얼굴로도 불리우는 마운트 러쉬모어 (Mt Rushmore)에 있는 4명의 대통령 얼굴상은 각 60 피트 크기에 14년에 걸려 완성되었다.  1998년에 완성된 "장관의 테라스(Grandview Terrace)"로 향하는 "깃발의 거리(Avenue of Flags)"는 찬반의 비평속에 개장했지만 해가 지면서 벌어지는 점등식 때에 보니 그렇게 나쁘지만은 아닌 것 같았습니다. "장관의 테라스(Grandview Terrace)"에 밀려 있는 관광객들로 사진 찍기가 쉽지는 않았지요. 워낙 유명해서 기대가 커서였는지 많은 방문객들이 생각보다 못하다는 평을 남겼지만 이곳까지 온김에 저희가 직접 보기로 하였습니다. 주차비 외에 따로 입장료가 없으니 손해라야 주차비 10불 날리는 것이니깐요. 마운트 러쉬모어 (Mt Rushmore)의 대통령 얼굴상은 한번은 직접 보셔야 하시지 않을까요.

Mt Rushmore National Memorial located in Black Hills , South Dakota features the faces of four presidents. Each face is 60 feet high and it took 14 years to complete. The Avenue of Flags leading to Grandview Terrace opened in 1998 with the mixed review, but it wasn't as bad as we expected under the Evening Sculpture Lighting Ceremony. But, you will be jockeying for the position at Grandview Terrace to take the picture. We do not know if it is the fame and/or high expectation, but Mt Rushmore had the mixed review by visitors. Regardless, we decided to try it ourselves as long as we are here. We figured the worst thing could happen is the wasted parking fee ($10) since there is no separate entrance fee. Mount Rushmore is one of those things you just have to see at least once.

"철의 산길(Iron Mountain Road)"을 따라 북쪽으로 가면 세개의 턴넬을 지나는데 그곳에서 바라다 보이는 큰바위 얼굴 경치는 일품입니다. 단지 텐넬 근처에 주차를하고 사진을 찍을 곳이 없다는 것이 문제입니다. 길 한 복판에서 사진을 찍으려 목숨을 건 모험도 불사하다면 몰라도.

While heading north on Iron Mountain Road, the view of monument from one of tunnels was picturesque. However, there was no place to park the car and take the picture unless you want to gamble with your life on the traffic.

크레이지 호스 기념비 (Crazy Horse Monument)

1948년에 시작하여 60년이 넘은 세월이 지났지만 이제 겨우 얼굴 정도 완성된 크레이지 호스 기념비 (Crazy Horse Monument)는 정부의 재정 지원을 거절하고 기부금과 입장료, 기념품 판매 수익으로만 경비를 충당하고 있습니다. 전부 완공이 되면 길이는 유람선만하고 높이는 60층 건물과 맞먹습니다. 지금은 이일을 시작한 조각가 코첵(Korczak) 씨는 죽고 부인과 자녀들이 아버지의 유업을 이어 받아 계속하고 있으며 말의 머리를 완성할 예정이랍니다.

크레이지 호스(Crazy Horse) 조각이 규모로나 그 의미가 큰바위 얼글 보다 더 저희들의 마음에 와 닿았지만 기념품 판매장은 흐리마켙(Free market)을 연상케하는 너무 상업적인 것이 실망이 되든군요.

After 60 years since starting in 1948, only the face of Crazy Horse has been completed. They refused the financial assistance from the government and the work has been continuing with donation, entrance fee and the profits from selling the souvenir. Once it is completed, it is as long as a cruise ship and taller than a 60 story building. Since the death of Korczak who started, his wife and children are continuing his work and next target is to finish the head of horse.

The size and meaning of Crazy Horse touched our heart more than Mt Rushmore, but the visitor center reminded us a free market. It gave us just too much commercial feeling.

불랙 힐즈는 미국  역사의 상징과 인디언들의 혼이 함께 공존하는 어떤 면에서는 이질적인 곳이네요.
Black Hills looks like a disparate place in a certain sense where the symbol of American History and the spirit of American Indians coexist.
