남한 일주 십일째날 (1): 정방사와 배론성지교회 (Trip Around South Korea Day 10-1: Jeongbangsa Temple and Baeron Holy Land Church)

정방사

충북 제천시 수산면 능강리 산52-1

정방사로 가려면 능강교 옆 좁은 도로를 따라 약 1.6km 정도를 올라가야 합니다. 도로가 좁아서 마주오는 차와 교행도 어려워 중간중간 교행 공간을 만들어 놓은 도로입니다. 이 길을 따라 올라가면 작은 주차장이 있고, 주차장에서 조금만 걸어 올라가면 정방사입니다.

충주호가 한 눈에 들어오는 금수산 정상 가까운 곳, 거대한 암벽 아래 자리잡은 작은 사찰입니다. 신라 문무왕 2년(662)에 의상대사가 세운 절이라고 합니다.

Jeongbangsa Temple

To reach Jeongbangsa Temple, you must climb approximately 1.6 km along the narrow road next to Neunggang Bridge. Because the road is narrow, there are spaces created along the way to pass oncoming vehicles. Following this road leads to a small parking lot, and Jeongbangsa Temple is a short walk away.

This small temple sits beneath a massive rock face near the summit of Geumsusan Mountain, offering a panoramic view of Chungju Lake. It is said to have been founded by Great Monk Uisang in the second year of King Munmu's reign (662) of the Silla Dynasty.

정방사에서 가장 먼저 만나게 되는 건물이 정방사의 백미인 "해우소" 입니다. 천국에있는 화장실이라며 반드시 볼일을 봐야 한단다. 조망을 보면 이유를 알게 됩니다.

The first building you encounter at Jeongbangsa Temple is the temple's highlight, the "Haewooso." It's said to be a heavenly restroom, and one must use it. The view from it makes it clear why.

법당으로 향하는 초입에는 범종각이 있고

At the entrance to the main hall stands the Beomjonggak

원통보전 앞 마당에서 내려다 보는 청풍호반의 하경(下景)은, 세상 사람들의 삼라만상을 모두 잊게 할 만큼 전망이 빼어나다.

The view of Cheongpung Lake and surrounding area, overlooked from the courtyard in front of Wontongbojeon Hall, is breathtaking and would make one forget all about the worldly affair.

원통보전 뒤 절벽아래 바위틈에는 석간수라는 약수가 차고 달콤한 맛으로 갈증을 풀어주는데 사시사철 마르지 않고 나온다고 합니다.

In the crevices of the cliffs behind Wontongbojeon Hall, there is a refreshing spring called Seokgansu, a cold and sweet mineral water that quenches thirst year-round.

원통보전에 주불로 모셔져 있는 나무로 만든 관음보살좌상은 비교적 작은 규모이나 전형적인 조선 중기 보살상의 특징을 잘 보여주고 있습니다. 불상은 문화재로 지정된 직후 도난당하여 현재까지 행방을 알 수 없어 현재 사찰측에서는 모습을 본뜬 모사품을 봉안하고 있습니다.

The wooden seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva enshrined in Wontongbojeon Hall, though relatively small in size, epitomizes the typical characteristics of mid-Joseon Dynasty Bodhisattva statues. The Buddha statue was stolen shortly after being designated a cultural asset, and its whereabouts remain unknown. The temple currently enshrines a replica.

정방사에는 또 특이한 지장전 건물이 있습니다. 정방사의 본당인 원통보전 왼쪽 아래에 있습니다. 이 지장전은 지장보살상의 뒷편이 그대로 바위입니다. 그러니까 지장전은 삼면만 건물이고 나머지 한쪽은 바위를 그대로 벽체로 쓰고 있습니다. 그리고 지장보살상 뒤 바위에 금박을 입힌 지장보살의 그림이 있습니다. 마치 지장보살상의 금색 그림자 같아 보이는 형태로, 여느 사찰에선 보기 힘든 구조입니다. (평점 4*)

Jeongbangsa Temple also boasts a unique Jijangjeon Hall. Located to the lower left of Wontongbojeon Hall, the temple's main hall, this Jijangjeon Hall features a rock wall behind the Jijang Bosal statue. Jijangjeon Hall has the regular building walls on three sides, with the remaining side using the natural rock as a wall. Behind the Jijang Bosal statue, a gilded image of Jijang Bosal is carved into the rock. It resembles the statue's golden shadow, a rare sight in any temple. (Review: 4*)

지나가다 잠시 쉬러 들렸는데 쉼터와 풍경이 너무 아름다워 시간을 보냈네요. 그리고 이곳의 특산믈인 개복숭아 초청 (12,000원)을 구입했습니다.

We stopped for a quick break, but we stayed a lot longer than we planned. The rest area and scenery were so beautiful that I spent a lot of time there. I also purchased a local specialty, a peach sachet ($8.40).

배론성지교회

충북 제천시 봉양읍 구학리 640

배론성지는 한국 초대교회의 신자들이 박해를 피해 숨어 들어와 화전과 옹기를 구워서 생계를 유지하며 신앙을 키워 나간 교우촌으로서 마을이 위치한 계곡이 배[舟] 밑창을 닮았다 하여 배론[舟論]으로 불린 곳입니다. 1801년 신유박해 때 황사영(1775∼1801)이 이곳의 옹기굴에 숨어 있으면서 조선 교회의 박해상황과 외국의 도움을 청하는 내용의 일명 "황사영 백서"를 작성하여 중국 베이징 주교에게 보내려다 발각되어 순교한 곳이기도 합니다.

1855년에는 한국 최초의 신학교인 "성요셉 신학당"이 세워져 외국인 신부가 조선인 신학생을 가르쳤고, 1861년 최양업 신부(우리나라 최초의 유학생이며 김대건 신부에 이어 두 번째 신부가 됨)가 문경에서 병사하자 시신을 이곳에 안장했습니다. 성요셉 신학당은 한문과 한글뿐 아니라 수사학·철학·신학 등도 가르쳤으며 한국 천주교 교육의 요람이 되었으나, 1866년 병인박해 때 외국인 신부가 체포되어 순교함으로써 폐쇄되었습니다.

배론성지는 천주교 신자에게는 매우 성스러운 장소이지만 주변 풍광이 매우 고요하고 아름다운 곳입니다. (평점 4*)

Baeron Holy Land Church

Baeron Holy Land is a village where believers of the early Korean Church fled persecution, earning a living by slash-and-burn farming and pottery making, while cultivating their faith. The valley where the village is located resembles the bottom of a boat, hence the name Baeron (舟論). During the Sinyu Persecution of 1801, Hwang Sa-yeong (1775-1801) hid in a cave here, where he wrote the so-called "Hwang Sa-yeong White Paper," detailing the persecution of the Joseon Church and seeking foreign aid. He attempted to send it to the Bishop of Beijing, China, but was caught and martyred.

In 1855, Korea's first seminary, "St. Joseph's Theological Seminary," was established, where foreign priests taught Korean seminarians. In 1861, when Father Choi Yang-eop (the first Korean student studying abroad and the second Korean priest after Father Kim Dae-geon) died in Mungyeong, his body was laid to rest here. St. Joseph's Theological Seminary taught not only Chinese characters and Hangul, but also rhetoric, philosophy, and theology, becoming the cradle of Catholic education in Korea. However, it was closed in 1866 after the foreign priest was arrested and martyred during the Byeongin Persecution.

Baeron Shrine is a sacred site for Catholics, but the surrounding scenery is also remarkably tranquil and beautiful. (Review 4*)

성당 뒤로 '최양업 토마스 신부 조각공원'이 있습니다.

The 'Father Thomas Choi Yang-eop Sculpture Park is located behind the cathedral.

단풍나무 앞에 있는 초가집은 '성 요셉 신학당'입니다. 1855년 프랑스 선교사 메스트로 신부가 설립했는데 교우촌 회장 장주기 요셉이 자신의 집을 신학당으로 봉헌하였다고 합니다.

The thatched house in front of the maple tree is the 'St. Joseph's Theological Seminary.' The seminary was founded in 1855 by French missionary Father Mestre, and it is said that the head of the parish community, Joseph Jang Ju-gi, donated his house to the seminary.

It is the 'Mind-Emptying Pond,' a hot spot in the Baeron Shrine.

메뉴 선택이 별로 없는데 곤드레 나물밥 (11,000원/1인) 은 2인이상만 주문이 됀다하여 그렇게 결정하였습니다. 나물들을 넣고 비벼 먹고 보니 잘한 짖이었네요. 실내 장식은 통나무 집을 연상케하는데 식사 때인지 기다리는 손님들도 꽤 있네요. 저희들은 몰랐는데 예약 필수라하네요.

Pulhaynggi

The menu doesn't offer much, and the Gondre Vegetable Rice ($7.75/person) was only available for two or more people, so we decided to order that. After mixing the vegetables and eating, we realized it was a good choice. The interior is reminiscent of a log cabin, and there were quite a few customers waiting, perhaps because it was lunch time. We didn't know, but reservations were recommended.
