Iceland Ring Road (1)

Snack given by Airline

Our flight to Iceland was full overnight flight, but the flight itself was uneventful except the eatable(?) dinner (snack) served.

(Rental Car Information)

The information for car rental shuttle at the airport is a little misleading. The web site indicates that the shuttle is "right outside" of terminal after clearing the custom. It is actually across from bus parking lot. If you arrive when the weather is cold, you may want to dress properly waiting for the shuttle since you will be exposed to the element (no place to shelter). However, the experience of picking up the car itself was smooth and fast. Before we left the rental lot, we took the advise of other people and took the videos of not only exterior of the car, but the undercarriage of the car since there could be damages caused by driving F-road or other incident in Iceland.

Address: 2, 230, Hólmgarður, Keflavík, Iceland
Hours: 7 A - 5:30 P(Tu-Fri), 7:30 A - 4 P (Sat-Sun), Closed (Mon)

This was our second stop after arriving in Iceland to get some pastries. We do not remember how many pastries we bought, but we paid 1800 ISK. They are less sweet than that we got at home and we won't get out of way to get them. The staff were friendly and it has ample parking space.

Costco/Kronan

We stopped at the Costco to check out any local products, but we did not find anything interesting. Another market place we tried is Krona. We bought Mango Ice cream (998 ISK) and Cherry Jam (486 ISK). The ice cream was similar to what we have at home, but we have not yet tried Cherry Jam.(to be updated).

Kleifarvatn Lake (클레이파르바튼 호수)

Lake Kleifarvatn, surrounded by lava mountains on hilly and curvy roads, is a spectacular location. This is a breathtaking lake, beautiful and mysterious at the same time. Kleifarvatn is the largest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, situated in the southern part of the peninsula. Spread across an area of 9.1 square kilometers, it is one of the deepest lakes in the country with a depth of about 97-meters. It is located on the fissure zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The unique feature of the sweeping blue lake is that it has no visible surface drainage that means no river runs to or from it.

Krysuvik Geothermal Area (크리수비크 지열 지역)

In the middle of the fissure on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (in the south of Reykjanes) is the geothermal area Krysuvik. The main geothermal sections in Krysuvik are Seltun, Hverahvammur and Hverahlid. The Krýsuvík Geothermal Area is defined by mud pots, hot springs and steaming vents, as well as the multi-coloured mineral deposits that stain the earth.

A well maintained boardwalk winds through the geothermal fields, and visitors can find information and educational signs all around that explain the area’s geology. Hikers can find a winding path leading to the top of the massive steaming vent and the view from the top is spectacular.

The restroom is free.

Hvolsvöllur (크볼스뵐뤼르) - Lava Center (라바 센터)

At Lava Center, you may experience the power beneath the feet and the biggest earthquake. We heard that you may be able to have a hands-on experience. But, some say that the experience at Universal studio might be better to experience. With the mixed review of Lava center, we decided to skip the center even though we originally planned to visit.

Messinn Selfoss
Brúarstræti 6a, Selfoss 800 Iceland

Plaza at the entrance/

We visited the place after lunch hour and it was cosy, but almost empty. We tried Lobster and Shrimp (3990 ISK) and Seafood Pasta (4290 ISK). Lobster and Shrimp was tasty with right amount of spice and Seafood Pasta was excellent. The ingredients were fresh and the presentation was good. The staff was friendly and helpful with menu.

The entrance to the restaurant is at the plaza side, not the street. We almost had given up finding it until we tried other side of street.

Our next stop is the first, but one of the famous waterfalls we will see in Iceland.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall (셀야란드포스 폭포)

Seljalandsfoss waterfall, part of the river Seljalandsá, has its origins underneath the glacier Eyjafjallajökull. The volcano beneath this ice cap was the one that erupted in 2010 and caused havoc at airports across Europe. You can see the glacier from the road!

This wonder is 60 meters (196 ft) tall, but it is commonly known as ‘the waterfall you can walk behind’ and is truly a must-visit while in Iceland. The pathway behind the waterfall is an easy walk with a few stairs, but visitors should be prepared to get dampened due to the perpetual mist of the falls, which also tends to make the rocks of the pathway slippery. It also provides a great photo opportunity.

There is a charge for using the parking lot (900 ISK) and the machines only accept credit cards. There are also bathroom facilities (free with parking fee), a food stand, and a small shop near the parking lot.

Gljúfrabúi Waterfall (글주프라부이 폭포)

Gljufrabui is often overlooked as it is slightly hidden and is smaller than its towering neighbor, Seljalandsfoss. The walk to the entrance of this waterfall is about 600 meters from Seljalandsfoss down a well maintained dirt path.

Take a waterproof jacket and shoes with you. It will require waterproof shoes for a short walk through a shallow creek or river to get into the cave. You will be wet for sure as you have to get into a cave. Although you will be walking through water, it isn’t a treacherous walk. However, after heavy rain, the water level rises and it becomes a bit trickier to maneuver your way into the cavern. Once inside the small cave, the waterfall comes into full view, and it is breathtaking. It looks as if it’s pouring through a skylight in nature’s ceiling. The mist from Gljúfrabúi will definitely get your face, hair, and clothing wet, but the experience is worth it!

There’s a giant boulder in the middle of the cavern, which is easy to climb and perfect for taking pictures.

You may see lambs almost anywhere, but you must stop if you see them on the road. We heard it would be very costly if you have an accident involving the lambs.

Fence of Bras (브라스의 울타리)

Along this wire fence Located across Lake Holtsos, travelers have been leaving a particular memento since 2012. Please be careful since there is no parking place.

(Our Dinner was)

We stoped at Gamla fjósið and ordered the steak sandwich (3180 ISK) to eat with the spicy ramen at the hotel after over night flight and all day sightseeing. We don't know about other dishes on the menu, but, judging from the sandwich, the food was pretty good. We may try other dishes if we have another chance.

(Where we stayed)

We spent our first night in Iceland at Welcome Lambafell. The log cabin style room was quiet and comfortable. The breakfast was good enough to start the day. There is no front desk and the check in is done over the phone. The problem we faced was that we could not get any assistant when we need.
It was a little difficult to locate the hotel and it is the last house at the end of the road.

Europe: 7 Cities in 23 Days - Day 15: Rome-4: Vatican City and Castel Sant'Angelo

This trip was before the Covid.

Today's itinerary is to visit the Vatican City in the morning and Castle Sant'Angelo after the lunch at Bonci Pizzeria.

Vatican City (바티칸 시국)

It’s a country of its own, inside Rome, and is home to world-famous sites including the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica.

Hours (시간):  St Peter's Basilica (7 - 6, M-Sa), Museum (9 - 6, M-Sa), Final entry is at 4 p.m
Fee: Varies from free for St. Peter’s Basilica to 17 Euro for Museum (on the museums' official website), and additional fees for skip the line and audio tour, etc.

Vatican Gate (바티칸 성문)

Here at the exit of the Vatican museums, you can see part of the original Vatican walls and gates.

The Terrace With A View Of The Basilica And Gardens

This will be your best photo of the dome of St.Peter’s church. The beautifully manicured Vatican Gardens is on your right.

(Pinecone Courtyard)

Pinecone Courtyard (솔방울 뜰)

The Pinecone Courtyard, or Cortile della Pigna, is named for the nearly 13-foot high pinecone sitting at one end. The giant pinecone is made of bronze and dates to the 1st century BC. The pinecone was once a giant fountain, with water coming out of the top and scales and running down the sides.

This modern art bronze sphere by Arnaldo Pomodoro in the Pinecone Courtyard may be one of the most photographed things in the Vatican Museums

Hall of the Chariot (전차의 전당)

In this hall statues and sarcophagi depict scenes from athletic competitions and circus games.

The two-horse chariot/

Countless statues/

(The Tapestries Hall)

It's impossible to miss a visit to the Galleria degli Arazzi, or the Tapestry Hall, as you have to walk through it to get to the Sistine Chapel. Set up in 1838, Tapestry gallery is one of the most famous galleries among Vatican Museums.

(The tapestry of The Resurrection of Christ)

The tapestry of The Resurrection of Christ

As you approach this particular tapestry from the left, keep your eyes on Jesus's eyes ... keep walking and watch his eyes. By the time you pass the tapestry, the eyes are still with you! It's a wonderful example of "moving perspective", a technique you find sometimes in paintings (like the Mona Lisa.) But to do this with a tapestry takes a lot more mastery and talent, and requires some very fancy stitching indeed!

(Tapestry Ceiling)

Tapestry Ceiling (태피스트리의 천장)

It's pretty hard not to notice the ceiling, a must-see all by itself (and one of the most photographed ceilings in the museums besides Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel!)

When you see the ceiling of the Tapestries Hall, you will most likely presume it is a sculpted relief and move on. However, the ceiling is completely flat. The illusion of the 3D appearance is down to the genius of 18th-century artists who learned how to trick the mind and with their skill to paint shadow and light on a 2D surface.

(The Maps Hall)

The Gallery of Maps contains the largest collection of geographical paintings ever created. These wall-sized maps depict Italy and Italian provinces, and were commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII in the 16th century.

All roads lead to Rome/

Rome/로마

Sardinia/

The ceiling of the Maps Hall is so impressive that some tourists are mistaking this gallery for the Sistine Chapel. The ceiling itself tells the story of important historical events from each region of Italy as you walk down the Hall. The ceiling was fresco painted by a number of mannerist artists (mannerism was considered late Renaissance art and pre Baroque art). The most famous of these artists who painted the ceiling were Cesare Nebbia and Girolamo Muziano, the artist who also supervised the whole ceiling.

A striking hallway in the Vatican/

La Porta Santa (Holy Door)

The holy door is opened during the holy year or Jubileum. If you happen to be in Rome during a Jubiluem (the next one scheduled for 2025) year you will find the holy doors open. The Holy Door by Vico Consorti is the northernmost entrance of Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.

Rear of the Holy Door (성문 뒷쪽)

Rear of the Holy Door/

Rear of the Holy Door/
Contained inside are several medals and canonical documents from the Pontificate during which the door was last opened.

천장 (The Ceiling)

The Ceiling (천장)

The ceiling itself is covered in gold leaf and shines as if you are already in heaven. Another point is the misconception of how big it actually is. The Renaissance artists were great at illusions and proportions. As you look higher up things normally should appear smaller to you. However, as you look up in St. Peter’s Basilica, everything is completely proportional because they made the artwork bigger as you got higher.

The Pietà was a popular subject among northern European artists. It means Pity or Compassion, and represents the Virgin Mary holding the dead body of crucified Jesus on her lap. The powerful scene is compounded even more by her look of extreme sadness together with his completely collapsed body on her lap.

It is believed that Michelangelo said of his sculptures, "The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material."

Baldacchino and High Altar (Tomb Of St. Peter)

The Baldacchino directly under the dome of the basilica is a canopy that hovers over the high altar, which has been used since Medieval times. Below the Baldacchino, you have what is called the High Altar ( called so because only the Pope is allowed to give mass there or someone he has personally appointed). It was intended to mark, in a monumental way, the place of Saint Peter's tomb underneath.

(Interesting fact)

There are no paintings in St. Peter’s Basilica. They were replaced with all glass or ceramic mosaics in the 19th century since many paintings were beginning to deteriorate due to the humid conditions inside the Basilica. This is why you are allowed to take photos with a flash in the Basilica.

Transfiguration (Raphael)

Transfiguration (Raphael)

The painting was Raphael’s last painting and depicts 2 stories in the Gospel according to Matthew with that of the Transfiguration and the meeting of the Apostles with the obsessed youth who will be healed when Jesus returns from Mount Tabor. Raphael was famous for his vivid use of colors. As you look up the painting, the colors were gradually made brighter culmination in Christ himself from the scene below.

Mosaic of Jesus giving the keys of the Kingdom to Peter

The other well known painting of "Jesus giving the keys of the Kingdom to Peter" is on the walls the Sistine Chapel.

St. Peter’s Square (성 베드로 광장)

It is the most famous square in the world and today the square is mainly used for two events that happen on a weekly basis: Papal Audience and Angelus.

The obelisk with a height of 25.5 m in the center of the square (41 m combined with the base) is not simply erected for decoration. Since it is believed that St. Peter was executed in the Circus of Nero, which was near the site of St. Peter's, the obelisk erected in the Nero arena was brought to the center of St. Peter's Square as a 'witness' of the martyrdom.

A balustrade surrounds the colonnade, along with 140 3.24m high statues of Popes and saints made by Bernini's disciples .

Bonci
Via della Meloria, 43, 00136 Roma RM

Pizza is on our lunch menu today. Bonci is about 25 minute walk from the Vatican City. Under the drizzle weather, the shop was not as busy as we expected, but pizza was pretty good.

Suppli Classico was surprisingly good.

There is no tables inside of the store except few standing tables outside of store.

(Statue of Saint Catherine)

Statue of Saint Catherine

This statue is probably easily overlooked, but it can be seen from the street. It is off to a corner of the park next to the Castel Sant'Angelo.

Catherine of Siena, a lay member of the Dominican Order, was a mystic, activist, and author who had a great influence on Italian literature and on the Catholic Church.

(Castel Sant’Angelo)
Hours: 09.00 - 19.30 (Tu - Sun)
Fee: € 12.00

Castel Sant’Angelo (산탄젤로 성)

Originally built as a Mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian, the Castel Sant’Angelo has been sitting on the banks of the river Tiber for nearly two thousand years. In that time it has evolved from its initial role as a tomb, becoming a fortress, a castle, and finally, a museum. It was once the tallest building in Rome.

We decided not to tour the inside of castle since we had to hurry the tour before it closes.

The bridge in front of the castle reminds us the bridge in Prague.

Love locks on the stone pillar instead of the bridge railings you see in many places.

Felice a Testaccio
Via Mastro Giorgio, 29, 00153 Roma RM, Italy

We don't remember the names of dishes, but they were delicious and we enjoyed very much. However, $20 for a dish with 6 raviolis seems expensive.

Pompi Tiramisù (폼피 티라미수)
Via della Croce, 82, 00187 Roma

We saw this place near the hotel and we are very glad to taste the tiramisu.
It was delicious and we will try the cakes when we visit again.

로마에서 적응하기 힘들었던 것 (one thing hard to get used to in Rome)

There is no toilet seat in most of restrooms except high class hotels. The reason they gave us was that it is too expensive to maintain them because of high rate of thief. Well....
