순천만 국가정원 (Suncheon Bay National Garden)

순천만 국가정원은 56개의 주제정원을 가지고 있으며, 크게 ‘세계정원 구역’, ‘수목원 구역’, ‘습지 구역’, ‘참여정원’으로 나뉘어져 있습니다. (평점 4*)

Suncheon Bay Garden has 56 theme gardens and is largely divided into “the World Garden”, “Arboretum”, “wetland” and '”participation garden" areas. (Review 4*)

동문 입구로 들어서면 길다란 메타세콰이어 산책로가 이어지고 산책로 주변에는 호수정원을 바라보며 쉬어갈 수 있는 벤치도 마련되어 있습니다.

Entering the East Gate, there is a long metasequoia-lined path along the Lake Garden with benches to rest and enjoy the scenery.

세계적 정원 디자이너 찰스쟁스가 디자인한 호수공원은 각각의 언덕 주변으로 산책로가 잘 되어 있으나 그늘이 없어 여름에는 무척 더울 수 있습니다.

Designed by world-renowned garden designer Charles Zangs, the Lake Garden features well-maintained walking paths surrounding each hill. However, the lack of shade on the trail can make the walk quite hot.

우리나라 정원의 형태 뿐만 아니라 세계 각국의 정원을 모티브로 하여 만든 세계정원은 각 나라별 특성과 환경에 따라 조성된 세계 각국의 정원을 만나보는 공간입니다. 열대 수목이 식재되어 있어 화려고 이국적인 분위기를 연출하는 태국정원, 계단식 설계가 특징인 이탈리아 정원, 네덜란드의 상징인 튤립뿐 아니라 풍차와 나막신 조형물이 설치되어 있어 국가정원 내에서도 포토존으로 인기를 끄는 대표적인 장소로 뽑히는 네덜란드 정원 등 세계 여행을 즐길 수 있는 곳입니다.

Inspired not only by Korean gardens but also by gardens from around the world, the World Gardens showcase the unique characteristics and environments of each country. The Thai Garden, with its vibrant tropical foliage, creates an exotic atmosphere while Italian gardens features a terraced design. The Dutch Garden, with its iconic tulips, windmills, and wooden clog sculptures, is a popular photo spot within national gardens. They make the garden a place to enjoy the trip around the world.

꿈의 다리가 있던 곳이 지금은 스페이스 브릿지로 바뀌었다고하는데 스페이스 브릿지를 멀리서 보면 다리 중간에 마치 우주선이 내려 앉은 것처럼 보이기도 합니다. 예전 꿈의 다리처럼 다리 내부를 가로질러 서문 방향으 로 갈 수 있습니다. 내부는 각종 테마로 꾸며져 있어 볼거리도 꽤 많이 있습니다.

The former Dream Bridge is now known as the Space Bridge. From a distance, the Space Bridge appears as if a spaceship has landed in the middle of the bridge. Just like the original Dream Bridge, you can cross the bridge toward the West Gate. The interior is decorated with various themes, offering plenty to see.

저희들은 들리지 못했지만 순천만정원과 남쪽에 자리한 순천만생태공원를 함께 들리면 통합권을 구입하여 저렴하게 방문할 수 있습니다.

Tip:

We could not visit the Suncheon Bay Ecological Park located south of Suncheon Bay Garden at this time. But if you plan to visit both, you can purchase a combined ticket for a cheaper price.

힐링카페

국가정원 안에 있는 초가집 분위기가 있는 힐링카페에서 간식을 먹으며 쉬는 시간을 가졌습니다.

매실 곶감모찌 (6,500원)와 매실 딸기 모찌 (3,500원)를 카페라테 (5,000원)와 먹었는데 맛 있었어요.

Healing Cafe

We took a break and enjoyed a snack at this healing cafe with a thatched-roof atmosphere located within the national garden. We had plum dried persimmon mochi ($4.70) and plum strawberry mochi ($2.50) with a cafe latte ($3.60), and they were delicious.

밤팜

점심으론 정식은 양이 너무 많은 것 같아 이 식당의 대표 메뉴는 아니지만 소고기 볶음면 (9,000 원)과 소고기 덥밥+반우동 (14,000 원) 으로 결정했습니다. 맛있게 먹은 점심이었어요. 식당 내부는 넓었지만 깨끗했고 직원들도 친철했습니다.

For lunch, we thought the set menu was too much of food and we decided on the beef stir-fried noodles ($6.48) and beef rice bowl with half portion of udon ($10.10),. They aren't the restaurant's signature dishes, but it was a delicious lunch. The restaurant was spacious and clean, and the staff was friendly.

순천에서 진주로 가는 길에 섬진강 휴계소에 들렸습니다. 오징어 구이 (7,500원, 별로)와 빅 아이스 아메리카노 (4,800원)을 먹으며 휴식 시간을 가졌습니다.

On the way to Jinju from Suncheon, we took a break at the Seomjin River Rest Area. We enjoyed the break time eating the grilled squid ($5.40, not so great) with a large iced Americano ($3.45).

진주성 (Jinju Castle)

진주성은은 진주시 남성동에서 본성동에 걸쳐 있는 둘레 1.7km의 석성(石城)으로, 원래 토성이었던 것을 고려 말 우왕 때 석성으로 개축하였다. 임진왜란 당시에 가장 치열했던 전투 중 하나인 진주 대첩의 현장이기도 하다. 진주시를 찾는 관광객들이 가장 먼저, 가장 많이 들르는 진주의 대표 명소이다.

현대의 진주성은 일제강점기 도시개발과정에서 외성들이 헐려 현재의 내성만 남았다. 원래 남쪽의 남강, 그리고 북쪽은 연못이 해자(垓子) 역할을 하는 천혜의 요새였으나, 일제강점기 때부터 도시 개발이 진행되며 연못들은 전부 매립되어 지금은 흔적을 찾을 수 없다 (평점 4*)

Jinju Castle is a 1.7km stone fortress spanning Namseong-dong and Bonseong-dong in Jinju City. Originally an earthen fortress, it was rebuilt into a stone fortress during the reign of King U in the late Goryeo Dynasty. It is also the site of the Battle of Jinju, one of the fiercest battles of the Imjin War. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Jinju, often the first stop for visitors to the city.

The present Jinju Castle, demolished during urban development during the Japanese colonial period, left with only the inner wall. Originally a natural fortress, with the Namgang River to the south and a pond to the north serving as a moat, the pond and its surrounding area were completely reclaimed during urban development during the Japanese colonial period, and now no trace remains. 진주성에는 많은 문화 유적들이 경내에 흩어져 있는데 특히, 촉석루는 2012년 CNN 에서 선정한 한국의 명소 50곳 안에 선정될 만큼 건축미와 풍경의 아름다움을 고루 갖추고 있다. 촉석루에서 남강과 함께 내려다 보이는 경치도 아름답지만, 강 건너편 망경동 강변에서 바라보는 야경 또한 몹시 아름답다.

Jinjuseong Fortress is dotted with numerous cultural relics. Chokseongnu, in particular, was selected by CNN as one of Korea's 50 must-see destinations in 2012 for its architectural and scenic beauty. While the view from Chokseongnu overlooking the Namgang River is breathtaking, the night view from the Manggyeong-dong riverside across the river is equally stunning.

공북문

공북문은 본래 흙으로 쌓은 성루였으나 고려 말과 조선 초에 돌을 이용한 석성(石城)으로 수축(修築)하고 임진왜란 이후에 중앙으로 내성을 쌓게 되는데 내 성을 지키는 정문이 바로 공북문 입니다. 한일합방 이후 훼손된 진주성을 복원하는 과정에서 공북문도 함께 복원되었고 2002년 우리가 아는 모습으로 복원이 완료되었습니다.

Gongbukmun was originally a fortress gate made of earth. In the late Goryeo and early Joseon Dynasties, it was rebuilt as a stone fortress gate. After the Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592, an inner fortress was built in the center. Gongbukmun Gate is the main gate that protects the inner fortress. In the process of restoring Jinju Castle, which was damaged after the annexation of Korea by Japan in 1875, Gongbukmun Gate was also restored. Restoration to the present shape was completed in 2002.

촉석루

촉석루는 개방이 안되 자세히 볼 수는 없었지만 자타가 공인하는 대한민국 3대 누각 중 하나입니다. 미국 CNN에서 선정한 <한국에 방문하면 꼭 가봐야 할 곳 50선>에 당당하게 이름을 올린 장소라고하네요. 남강 가운데 돌이 우뚝 솟아있다 하여 촉석루라 불리며, 한국전쟁 당시 소실되었는데 이를 안타깝게 여긴 진주시민들이 힘을 모아 1960년에 재건했어요. 그 자체로도 아름답고 자랑스러운 촉석루지만, 촉석루가 많은 사람들의 사랑을 받게 된 또 다른 이유는 촉석루와 논개의 이야기 때문입니다.

Chokseoknu Pavilion

Since Chokseoknu Pavilion was closed to the public on the day we visited, we couldn't get a close look, but it's widely recognized as one of Korea's three most beautiful pavilions. It's even listed on CNN's "50 Must-See Places in Korea." Its name comes from the rock towering in the middle of the Namgang River. It was destroyed during the Korean War, but the citizens of Jinju who were sad by its loss, joined forces to rebuild it in 1960. While Chokseoknu is a beautiful and impresive structure in itself, another reason it's so beloved is the story of Chokseoknu and Nongae.

임진년 진주대첩 당시 진주성의 관군과 백성들의 주요 식수원으로 사용됐던 것을 2013년 진주시가 발굴 복원했습니다.

Well

This well, which served as the primary water source for government troops and residents of Jinjuseong Fortress during the Battle of Jinjin (1592), was excavated and restored by Jinju City in 2013.

국립진주박물관

국립진주박물관은 임진왜란의 3대 대첩 중의 하나인 제1차 진주성 전투와 제2차 진주성 전투가 벌어진 진주성에 위치하여 임진왜란을 주제로 하는 전문 역사박물관이다. 저희가 들린 날이 월요일이라 휴관으로 관람은 못했습니다.

National Jinju Museum

The National Jinju Museum is a history museum with the major theme of the Japanese invasions of Korea. It is located in Jinju Castle which was one of the three great battles of Imjin War, First Battle of Jinju Castle and Second Jinju Battle of Jinju Castle. Since it was Monday the day we visited, we couldn't see anything.

주차 할 곳도 마땅치 않고해서 진주성에서 가까운 곳에 있는 식당을 찾던 중 에나식당 (경남 전주시 본성동 2-13) 이 눈에 뛰어 들렸습니다. 콩나물 국밥 (7,000 원)과 김치찌게 (8,000원)를 주문했는데 그저 한끼 때운 것으로 만족했습니다.

화가는 누구인지 모르지만 식당에 걸려 있던 그림이 마음에 드네요.

We didn't know who the artist was, but we liked the painting hanging in the restaurant.

Since it was getting dark and we were not sure about the parking, we were looking for a restaurant near Jinjuseong Fortress when Ena Restaurant (2-13 Bonseong-dong, Jeonju-si, Gyeongsangnam-do) caught our eye. We ordered bean sprout soup with rice ($5.00) and kimchi stew ($5.80), and they were good enough the a meal.
